Welcome!to the Digital Arts Program at UNM Continuing Education

We provide quality up-to-date curriculum in a variety of Digital Arts topics to meet your vocational goals and needs. Our instructors are profession-als in the fields they teach, providing valuable opportunities for network-ing and real-world experience.

Anyone over 18 may take our Digital Arts classes. Pursue a certificate in the topic of your choice or just explore the classes that interest you. If you have prior experience or specific goals, customizing your certificate program is an option. Make an appointment for advisement, stop by to see our facility, or just register to get started. We are conveniently located on University Blvd, just north of Indian School, with free parking.

General InformationThe Digital Arts Program at UNM Continuing Education provides non-credit training in all aspects of digital arts including graphic design, computer graph-ics, web design, photography, filmmaking, video, audio, interaction design, motion graphics, animation, and music production. We are also the only Apple Authorized Training Center in New Mexico. Courses may be taken as part of a certificate program or independently.

AdvisementWorking Towards a Certificate

Certificate students should fill out a student information form or contact the program supervisor to be put on the program mailing list. Contact the program supervisor at any time with your questions or to ensure that accurate certificate requirements and any customized curriculum needs are being met.

Underage StudentsIf you are age 12-17 and wish to attend Digital Arts classes, contact the program supervisor for information and an interview.

FacilityLocation

Most courses are held in the UNM Continuing Education complex south building at 1634 University Blvd. NE in Albuquerque, just north of Indian School. Stop by to visit our facility or make an appointment for a tour. Alter-nate locations are indicated at the time of registration.

ParkingParking is free and readily available for all classes held at the UNM Continuing Education/UNM Conference Center complex. Please refrain from parking in the clinic or Masonic Lodge parking lots adjacent to our campus. Your car may be towed or ticketed. If our front and back parking lots are full, overflow park-ing is located at 1642 University Blvd NE, two lots north of our campus.

Computer LabsMost of the computer courses are held in one of our dual-platform Digital Arts labs. Certificate students are encouraged to become familiar with and use both Mac and Windows platforms during class time. Practice time may be scheduled by calling the program supervisor.

PoliciesAttendance

One hundred percent attendance is required to qualify for each course certifi-cate. If you must miss a class session due to an emergency, you have two weeks to request to make up a session or a class and one year to complete the make-up. Email your request to the program supervisor.

Waiting Lists and Changes to the ScheduleIf a course is full, you can be put on a waiting list with the registration office or online. If enough people are interested, we may open another section of a course. Check our website for the most current class listings. Register early to ensure a seat.

Refunds and DiscountsYour tuition, minus a $15 cancellation fee per non-credit course, will be re-funded if a written request is submitted to us at [email protected] and received in the registration office 72 hours prior to the first class meeting. Refer to the UNM Continuing Education main catalog for more specific refund, cancellation, and transfer policies and for any current discounts. UNM Tuition Remission is accepted for all Digital Arts classes.

Prerequisites and Course OptionsPrerequisites are listed with each course description. These prerequisites pre-pare you for the next course and must be fulfilled before advancing. If you have prior experience with a topic, you may place yourself in the most appropriate class. For basic prerequisite course assessments, see page 63. “Suggested” courses are not required, but may enhance comprehension.

Beginning Computer CoursesOperating System Basics (51101/4101/11) or basic Windows or Mac OS experience is a prerequisite for all beginning computer courses in Digital Arts. Students with equivalent experience may waive this prerequisite.

Course SubstitutionsIf you have prior experience or training in related topics, you may, at the department’s discretion, make appropriate course substitutions for required courses in a certificate program after undergoing a portfolio review. Contact the program supervisor to schedule an appointment.

Fast Track CoursesFast Track courses are designed for those who already have some experience with the subject matter and need to review or enhance their skills, or for the very advanced computer user who needs a more fast-paced course.

ConcentrationsYou may choose one or more concentrations or a combination of concentra-tions when working towards a certificate that offers this choice.

Tutorial ElectivesIf you have taken a Digital Arts class with us and would like a little more train-ing with the instructor on that same topic or software, our two-hour Tutorial Elective would be a good option. For more information or to schedule your Tutorial Elective, contact the program supervisor. Some prerequisites and restrictions may apply. Cost for a Tutorial Elective is $199.

Applying for a Master CertificateRequirements

There is no deadline for completing coursework for a master certificate. However, after two years, the requirements may change. Contact the program supervisor to ensure your requirements are up to date. See pages 11-24 for current master certificate requirements.

SubmissionsTo request a master certificate, send an email indicating the certificate request-ed to the program supervisor. Include your full name, mailing address, phone number, email address, and a list of any approved course substitutions. An appointment with the supervisor may be required.

Projects in Digital ArtsAll Level II master certificate candidates are required to complete the Projects in Digital Arts course or approved substitution. Projects students are also re-quired to submit final computer files and printed samples of their project to the department for approval and potential display or publication. Portfolio reviews and job prospects are available upon completion of these requirements.

FacultyKingsley Anderson, MHAMHA from Tulane University. Kingsley has over 10 years experience in web design and development. As president of his own web design business, he has helped over 70 clients achieve a superior web presence. His specialties include database-driven web applications, custom content management tools, e-commerce and search engine optimization.

Joey Belville, ACTJoey Belville is an award-winning music producer who has many national releases to his credit, several of them recorded in Logic Pro. He was an early adopter of computer based audio recording and has been using it on a professional level for over 10 years. Joey is an Apple Certified Trainer for Logic Pro.

Cindy Bernier, BFABFA with a Graphic Design emphasis from University of Arizona. Cindy has over 25 years of experience as art director for large healthcare companies and advertising agencies. Currently she owns her own design and advertising business. Her work has won many awards, including one of the prestigious “1% for the Arts” awards for New Mexico.Pat Berrett, MBAMBA, UNM Anderson Schools. Pat has worked in commercial photography since 1980. His primary client base includes those in the arts, crafts, and performing arts. He also works with many high tech and emerging technology clients.

Ed Brandt, BABA from Lewis University in Romeoville, IL where he discovered his passion for cre-ativity and technology. Ed works professionally as a graphic designer, enjoys expressing creativity through painting and photography, and sharing what he’s learned about design and Apple products through education.

Jeff Brody, BABA in Anthropology from the University of Chicago. Jeff has over 25 years experience in information technology and software development. He currently owns his own consulting company specializing in application programming, website development and training for small businesses.

Virginia DeBolt, MAAfter a career in public education, Virginia embarked on a new career in technology, teaching web design classes and writing several books about web design, HTML, CSS and Dreamweaver. She contributes to the Web Standards Project online web design curriculum called InterACT.

Mary Elkins, BABA in mathematics, AA in commercial photography. A lifelong fan of cameras and lighting gear, Mary has mastered the most complicated style of imagery—architectural and interior photography while working for a local photography studio. Mary special-izes in digital techniques using Photoshop and Lightroom.

Adele Gangai, BFABFA in graphic design from Rochester Institute of Technology, New York. Adele has over 25 years of graphic design experience from working in advertising, newspaper, printing, animation and museum agencies. She has won several awards and was a contributor to the 2010 National Medal for Museum and Library Service as a graphic developer. Adele owns and operates her own graphic design business.

Kevin Glasgow, BSBS in Graphic Design and Art Education from Eastern New Mexico University. Kevin has over 25 years experience as a graphic designer in both print and broadcast media. He currently works as creative director for a regional industrial supply company.

Jeff LaFlamme, BFABFA in Animation, Rhode Island School of Design. For over 15 years, Jeff has been the executive producer of an award-winning animation studio. He has animated, de-signed and storyboarded on numerous feature, television and commercial productions for major studios. He specializes in 2D and 3D character animation.

Sean Lemons, BFABFA in Computer Graphics from Central Missouri State University. Sean has 14 years of combined experience as an interactive systems developer with experience building and maintaining high-end web sites, kiosks, CDs, and multimedia software as well, with a background in graphic design, interface design, usability and accessibility issues.

Marc Leonard, BSBS in TV/Film from DeSales University. From film to television, Marc has a broad experience base in the visual arts. As a filmmaker, he has seen many projects from con-ception to completion, giving him a strong sense of post-production workflows and solutions. Marc specializes in editing, visual effects, and color grading.

Maggie MacnabMaggie has owned her visual communications business since 1981. She has received international recognition for corporate identity and graphic design. She writes about creativity and design theory, speaks at national conferences, and gives workshops on symbolism. She has written two design theory books, Decoding Design (2008) and Design by Nature (2011).

Mary Ellen Merrigan, BA BA in Speech, emphasis Radio/Television, Northwest Missouri State University. Mary Ellen is president of a local marketing business and develops successful D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) marketing strategies for a wide range of clients. Mary Ellen is certified in Social Media from VA Classroom and a graduate of SelfGrowth.com’s Social Media University.

Richard Mertz, JDJD, University of Michigan Law School. Richard is an attorney in UNM’s Office of University Counsel where his practice areas include copyright, trademarks and various commercial matters. He began his law career in private practice followed by five years as general counsel for the New Mexico Environment Department.

Marc Louis Mintz, MBA-IT, ACTC ACSP, ACHDSMarc is CIO of a local IT consulting and service firm. He is the only New Mexico member of the Apple Consultants Network to hold certification as both Apple Certi-fied Technical Coordinator and Apple Certified Support Professional. In addition, he has produced award-winning graphic design and print advertising for Lexus, Infiniti, Toyota, Nissan, and Taco Bell.

Barak Naggan, ACTAward-winning adventure videographer/editor and stills photographer since 1995. Barak has traveled around the world shooting documentaries, worked as a cinema-tographer on short and feature films, and was the primary videographer for an aerial photography company. Barak has shot and edited video for the European National Geographic Channel and is an Apple Certified Trainer for Final Cut Pro.

Glenn Norman, MAMA in English, UNM. Glenn is a Linux, UNIX and Windows network consultant and programmer with over 15 years experience in the medical, education and security fields. A member of ISECOM and an Open Source software advocate, he believes in “user-friendly” programming and UNIX instruction.

Dan Noyes, BFABFA from UNM with an emphasis in Photography. Dan has worked in printmaking for over 10 years. His artwork has been exhibited in the US and Canada and has been published in several publications, including Inquiring Mind and Remembering 9/11 Through the Eyes of a Printmaker. He has completed Public Art Commissions for the City of Albuquerque and Urban Forest.

Richard Nunez, MBAMBA with an emphasis in marketing from the University of Phoenix. An award-win-ning photographer, Richard owns and operates his own photography business. He specializes in wedding photography, and also does portrait photography, maternity, and architectural photography.

Cristina Olds, BABA in Spanish Literature from the University of California at Santa Cruz. Cristina has over 20 years of graphic design experience in printing, publishing and health care. She owns her own graphic design business and is a writer and editor.

Caroline Orcutt, MAMA in Art from UNM, emphasis in Printmaking and Photography, minor in Art History. Caroline has over 30 years of experience in graphic design and digital arts. She ran her own business for many years and specializes in teaching graphic design. Caroline is the UNM Continuing Education program supervisor for Digital Arts.

Efraín Padró, JDJD, University of Minnesota Law School. Efraín practiced law for almost 20 years before becoming a full time editorial photographer in 2003. He specializes in travel, architectural and nature subjects, and is the author of The Photographer’s Guide to New Mexico.

Anita Quintana, BFABFA in Graphic Design, Eastern New Mexico University. Anita has over 30 years experience as a multimedia designer. She owns a graphic design business specializing in design and consultation for both print and web media. Anita is a regular contributor to the award-winning Revealed and Design Professional series published by Thomson Learning.

Robert Reck, MAMA in Fine Art, UNM, emphasis in Photography with a minor in Art History. Robert is an internationally recognized architectural, interior design, and hospitality photog-rapher with numerous books to his credit. He has held a staff photographer position with Architectural Digest for over 20 years, and currently serves as President of the NM chapter of ASMP.

Joanne Schmidt, BMBachelor of Music from Hardin-Simmons University. An award winning photographer and UNM Continuing Education Digital Arts graduate, Joanne owns and operates her own digital image business. She specializes in filmmaking and photo art created with High Dynamic Range techniques.

Susan Schuurman, MAMasters in History from UNM. Susan has 18 years of media experience in print and television. She is currently a trainer and field producer for non-profit Quote-Unquote Media Center as well as a freelance camera operator, editor, grip and PA. Susan co-produces New Mexico Indy Media, a public affairs show on public access TV.

Ed Smith, BA, MSMS in Communication, Fort Hays State University. Award-winning director and production manager at several television stations in New Mexico and Kansas, Ed has traveled extensively, shooting and editing commercials, documentaries and videos for over 25 years. Ed is now owner of a full-service advertising agency and television production company in Rio Rancho.

Doug Stine, MBAMBA, Santa Clara University. Doug Stine is a seasoned marketing and business pro-fessional with more than 20 years of experience in Silicon Valley, where he held senior positions in advertising and marketing. He has served as CEO/publisher of a local magazine and is currently account executive and director of new business development at a local marketing, public relations and advertising agency.

Brad Stoddard, ACTOwner of a local production and postproduction company, Brad produces, directs and is a picture editor with awards and credits in television, documentary and narrative film. Brad is an Apple Certified Trainer in Final Cut Pro and the Vice President of the New Mexico Post Alliance.

Lisa Tannenbaum, BMBachelor of Music from New England Conservatory of Music. An award-winning digi-tal photographer, Lisa owns and operates an online photography business. In addition, she has worked as a freelance web designer, specializing in search engine optimization and the arts, since 1998.

Zac Van Note, BFA BFA in Graphic Design, New Mexico State University. Zac has over 20 years of experience in graphic design, web development and marketing communications. He has worked on a wide range of projects, including websites, user interface design, cat-alogs, magazines and tradeshow booths. He is currently a manager of User Experience and Multimedia Development at a Fortune 100 company.

Certificate ProgramsNine certificate topics are available, listed below. Level I provides information and skills towards entry-level employment. Level II is a continuation of Level I and provides advanced training for employment. The shorter Basics certificates are designed for those who need to get started quickly.

The number of hours required vary per certificate. (See certificate requirements starting on page 11.) Prerequisites are not included in the certificate hours. Full-time students should be able to complete one certificate in two semesters or fewer, and students may work towards more than one certificate concurrent-ly. Customized training and certificates are also available.

Apple The Apple certificates prepare you for operating, upgrading and maintaining Mac computer systems at home or in the office. Take your Apple Certification exam with us.

Graphic Design/Print The Graphic Design/Print certificates focus on professional design and production for printed materials including brochures, newsletters, ads, letterhead packages, posters, books, etc.

Website Design/Web Developer The Website Design and Web Developer certificates focus on building and maintaining professional and effective web-sites. Various options for design and development are presented.

Multimedia The Multimedia certificates focus on design and production for print and electronic media including websites, CDs, DVDs, self-running presentations, as well as brochures, newsletters, ads, etc.

Instructional Media Developer The Instructional Media Developer cer-tificate focuses on creating materials for the classroom, including multimedia content for online learning.

Digital Photography The Digital Photography certificates offer training in digital photography and photo-editing which may be used in print and web design, as a fine art medium, or in commercial photography.

Digital Filmmaking The Digital Filmmaking certificates provide training in camera and editing techniques, motion graphics, audio, and 2D animation. Combine this with Apple Certification in video-editing.

Apple Pro Certifications These national certifications are designed to create a benchmark for assessing users’ proficiency in Apple’s professional video editing and music production applications.

Music Production Enter the world of modern music production with digital recording, editing and mixing techniques for music bed, soundtrack, hip hop, rhythm and blues, rock, electronic music creation and more.
