    Presidents MessageHello Badgers!

Vintage bike season is well underway with a fistful of events already in the books and just about every weekend from now thru October has something going on ei-ther locally or nationally. I can’t believe we are already halfway through June!

My commentary has to start with a look-back to the Brewtown Rumble. In only its 2nd year, this is the premier moto-event in Milwaukee! Mother Nature again coop-erated with a cool and sunny day albeit a bit breezy at times. The move to an early June date next year should help at least warm things up and give us a better chance at more stable weather for the outdoor extravaganza!

The vibe all day long was very positive and everything went on without a hitch. This year I’d like to especially recognize the hard work of Renee Klatt and Bryana

Kortendick who coordinated the volunteers for this year’s event. Their efforts were key to how smooth ev-erything went. Nice job ladies!

The bike show was very well organized and the trophies were second to none! A nice variety of winners kept to the theme of this “all inclusive” event. Kudos to Chris Tribbey & Gwenn Barker for setting a new standard for this show!

AMCA Executive Director Keith Kizer accepted our invite and traveled into Milwaukee for the Rumble. I know he tried to get around to meet as many of you as possible to chat to get your feedback on anything AMCA or otherwise. If you didn’t get a chance to visit with Keith please know he is a very approachable person and values all of our perspectives. Don’t hesitate to shoot Keith an email ([email protected]) if you have some ideas on how to improve the AMCA or local chapter experiences alike. I’ve included Keith’s thank-you letter to me, (see page 7) sharing his thoughts on the Badgers & the Brewtown Rumble, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the read and be very prideful of the organization you are a part of. Again, a Huge THANK-YOU to all the volunteers that helped with the Rumble!

Our “2nd Annual” spring meeting at Ken & Rhonda’s was another huge success with a great showing by ourMembership. I “unofficially” counted 80 heads at the meeting! Ken & Rhonda are great hosts and thanks again you two for hosting! Will there be a “3rd Annual”? :o)

A handful of Badgers showed up at the Emma Davidson Country Canter and the opening night of Crusin’ the Grove on Badger Heritage night events the past two weeks. Thanks to all the Badgers that take time to support these events and associated causes. There are some nice photo collections for both of these events posted on the Badger Facebook page by various members, go check them out!

Our next “big gig” is the Badger Heritage Field Games at the Wild One’s Weekend & Knucklehead Reunion on Saturday July 9th. If you want to get out and have some fun on your old bike, this is the event to partici-pate in! Chris Tribbey & Josh Richardson have done a great job in leading the efforts here so if you want to get involved, please reach out to these two gentlemen.

At last count, we had 85 people signed up for the 2016 edition of the Badger Derby. This “members only” event the weekend of July 22nd thru 24th will be packed full of riding activities and ample downtime to do some “bench racing” and socializing. There will be no formality of a chapter meeting this weekend; it will be all about “fun and camaraderie”! If you haven’t signed up there is still time to do so. The committee here led by Bill Rodencal has done an excellent job putting together a variety of participation options. Please check your inbox for past emails we’ve sent regarding sign-up and costs for this event.

Take care, have fun and ride safe,

    Dan

    Brewtown Rumble Re-CapBy Kevin Frank

The 2nd annual, 2016 Brewtown Rumble is in the books and by all accounts it was another rousing success, improving on the inaugural event. The team of committee members and volunteers (over 70 people total) filled mostly by Badger members made the event a success. A special thanks to all Badger members on the committee: Robin Barry, Larry Bilda, Renee Klatt, Steve Pe-ters, Chris Tribbey, all the officers and new member Noel Tylla.

We almost maxed out our possible 125 registration spots with 123 paid to enter the show. 107 were there the day of. Of those in the show, 38 were Har-ley-Davidsons, meaning 69 (64%) were not, which shows how well we are doing at making this a diverse show of all brands – in fact if you add up all Japanese brands they beat out HD at 41 total.

People had a lot to see and do at the event beyond ogling over all the bikes in the show. There were of course all the other bikes ridden there by attendees of which we think we almost doubled last year reaching possibly 5,000 people all day. We had over 30 vendors and 6 food options, plus all the great Pabst prod-ucts provided by Best Place. We also had the Hagerty Youth Judging pro-gram, the first ever motorcycle version of their popular auto judging program. The helmet raffle for BUILD was a rousing success raising $875 by itself, something we will likely expand next year.

Thanks to the support of sponsors and everyone’s help, in the end we once again raised over $7,000 for the BUILD Moto Mentor program.

AMCA National Executive Director Keith Kizer came in to attend the Rum-ble and he was blown away by the event. He sent a letter (see page 7) to the chapter praising all those involved in putting it on. Building on the success of the National Road Run last year, the Badgers are proving to be one of the premier chapters in the AMCA.

Letter From Keith KizerAMCA Executive Director

    Dan,

I wanted to formally thank you for the invite to the Brewtown Rumble. You kept telling me what to expect, yet you guys surpassed all my expectations. I seri-ously was expecting the entire event to take place in the lot where the stage was set up. I did not expect two city blocks packed with old bikes.

As you have been trying to tell me for the last year, the Club could learn from the Chapters and you are absolutely correct. Here is just a short list of my take a ways from today.

    • I Love Milwaukee!

    • Kevin Frank is a genius and rocks a wicked haircut. The simplicity of the event is a natural winner. The ability to work with such a his-toric location downtown and the cooperation of city officials to em-brace the event is priceless knowledge to repeat this kind of event for other Chapters.

    • National Meets could take a page or two from Kevin and his team’s playbook. It was hard to take it all in with only one day. P.T. Barnum would be proud.

    • Steve Peters is a wizard at projecting the Chapter’s image and branding. One that I’m jealous of and have been using your Badger logo as samples for over a year. And, the Badger’s Girls did an excellent job selling the products. A lesson all Chapters could learn.

    • Jon Davidson Oeflein is the right person to have manning your Chapter booth. If you stand any-where near the booth and stand inactive for more than 10 seconds, he runs over to give you a big hug. Who wouldn’t’ feel welcome. I’m pretty sure he even does this with perfect strangers.

    • Chris Bilda was one of the very first to send me an email to congratulate me when I came aboard with AMCA in 2014. It was great to meet him today and talk taxes and Road Runs. Okay, it was fun to talk about Road Runs. Chris was a perfect example of collaboration. He suggested One Day Na-tional Road Runs so the working guy can participate. That made me think, why not have a Sunday ride in conjunction with a 3-day National? Both ideas are worth pursuing.

    • Dan Riedel’s group did an important and fantastic job working along with Hagerty on Youth Judg-ing. This is without question a task that needs shared and taught to other Chapters.

    • Dennis (Worthy), I will be back for some “Crack Bacon”

Don’t tell any of the other Chapters but in the last two years this weekend was the most fun I’ve had with one specific Chapter and I appreciate the hospitality and the many friendly faces I met. You guys are doing a wonderful job in keeping the vision of the AMCA alive and well. Keep on doing what you do. Oh, and you are without doubt the best dressed Chapter of the 69. And Freddie (Franklin) is taking it up a notch.

I’m a Southern Boy through and through as Don Dzurick can tell you through many of our Civil War, blue and grey debates. But I can honestly say that if I had to ever again live in the frozen North, I would come hang with you guys. You ALL Rock!

    Your Friend,

    Keith

With an attendance at about 80 members, the 2016 Spring Meeting at Ken and Rhonda Rottmann’s place in Kenosha was a great success. The weath-er was perfect for a ride as many chose to take their bikes. The food and drinks were fantastic as we all had our fill. The atmosphere was fun as well as we all had a lot to look at with many British bikes in Ken’s shop in addition to a few other types repre-sented and the many artifacts to view. Of course we had our meeting and many topics were discussed with plenty of input from the group. Then after the meeting we were treated to a look at the progress on their 1915 fire house. What a great day!

  • Hey Badgers!

With so many great bike events to attend this year, it can sometimes be diffi-cult to choose where to go. But, as I very much enjoy riding my bike I know I will find the time to go to many of the events with my fellow antique motorcy-cle enthusiasts and friends in the Badger Heritage MC.

In order to be able to ride to these happenings, the bike needs to be in proper working order. I try to do as much of the maintenance on my bike myself, but occasionally I need help. That is where I turn to members of the club.

With the tremendous knowledge base of our members, there are always plen-ty of suggestions as to how something should be fixed. I can find this advice at club meetings, various motorcycle events, our weekly meet-up at the Harley-Davidson Museum Bike Night every Thursday or even on Facebook. Many issues or parts searches were certainly helped by posting something about it on Face-book. Recently my search for a couple windshield parts was resolved by my posting on Facebook.

Also, there are several members that own and operate shops that can help you with your bike problems. Just take for instance those that advertise in our newsletter. Check page 12 for some repair shops, services and accessories and page 18 for other parts, services and good fellowship. I encourage every club member to patronize your fellow Badgers businesses - I certainly have and have enjoyed great success.

I know there are also other members that may provide motorcycle services, or have their own businesses and may wish to advertise in our newsletter. Just let me know and we may be able to include you in future newsletters. I am willing to design your ad for free and the ad placement is free to members. All ads are subject to review as we don’t want our newsletter to just be filled with advertisements.

Well, as I am writing this I am about to get ready to go for a ride, so I hope all of you can get out on your bikes and enjoy the great summer weather.

    See you at upcoming events!

Over the years I have had the opportunity to do detail cleaning of cars and motorcycles and that experience helped get me a one day job on a Wisconsin Lottery television commercial shoot on April 12th, 2006. The ad was to promote the giveaway of two Harley-Davidson motorcycles. There would be a couple new Harley-Davidson’s as well several other older Harley’s there lent by individual owners and I was asked if I would be interested in working on the commercial shoot as the bike detailer. My responsibility would be to clean the bikes for the filming and keep them looking good during the shoot.

The studio was in a large open space where the camera and bikes would be used for the commercial. I was also told that other than the bike that was to be given away, only the right side of the engine needed to be detailed and shown by the camera.

Within about two hours I had them all ready. In the meantime the rest of the crew of about 20 arrived and also started their particular functions of preparing the set. There were also lottery people there as well as a couple members from the design firm doing the commercial. A couple of the owners of the older bikes that were dropping off their rides stayed to watch.

They built a large box then they could roll a motorcycle onto a platform lift and put the box around the bike. The box was made of wood framing covered in white paper and had a small hole on one side for the camera lens to fit into so there were not any reflections of the camera on the chrome of the bikes. This was to also allow them to completely control the lighting and the look they wanted.

One by one they would roll the 7 or 8 motorcycles into the box and then set the lighting and shoot about 20 seconds of film. The set-up for each bike took about 20 to 30 minutes and just before the camera rolled, the camera man would yell for me to come in and do my thing. Besides doing a deep cleaning of the engines before hand, I also did a quick dusting just before the camera shot any footage of each bike.

One other job I performed came about by accident or necessity. A couple of the bikes were kick start and no one other than me knew how to start a bike that way. I had to carefully step over the bike in the box and start it as part of the filming was to show the engines running and vibrating. They also had me throttle the engines a little to keep them running as they were cold and eventually had me start and stop all but one of the bikes for the entire shoot, even the electric start ones.

I also was asked to help the owner of one of the older bikes to keep his motorcycle running. The guy came with his bike running bad-ly as it sputtered and backfired a few times while running in the building. I was asked to help him outside to fine tune the carburetor to help it run better. We eventually got it going a little better and stopped the backfire, but it still smoked quite a bit and everyone wanted to shoot it quickly and get it out of there.

    Continued on page 15...

Another problem I ran into was that some of the older bikes had scratch-es or other imperfections on or around the engine I could not get rid of including stains or corrosion with the only way to fix them would have been to replace the parts or use power equipment like a wire brush. No time to do that nor did I bring any kind of tools like that.

One other small matter that I assisted with was the shooting of the sub-ject motorcycle that was part of the giveaway. Since they had only one bike, they wanted to shoot it from two different sides and then super-impose them in the final edit to look like two bikes side by side. I was unaware of this concept until after they shot the bike from the first angle and were about to shoot it from the second angle.

For the shooting of the giveaway motorcycle, they constructed a much larger box above the area of the shooting of blue polystyrene covered in white on the inside that had many lights attached to the metal tubing frame.

When they filmed the subject motorcycle from the right front, it leaned to the right in the picture away from the camera. When they wanted to shoot it from the left front it also leaned to the right in the picture to-wards the camera. What they wanted was to have it lean to the left so it would look opposite the first shot. I stepped in and told them that if they put a block of some-thing like wood under the kickstand, they could get the bike to rest in a near perfectly vertical position with almost no lean.

They tried placing a block of wood under the kickstand and covering the block with a black cloth. It worked! I asked if they were going to shoot the first angle again with the block of wood and they told me there was no time to do it and would leave it as is. So,

in the final broadcast commercial you see the first shot of the bike on the left of the screen leaning to the left or the right of the picture and the second shot of the bike on the right side of the screen standing straight up. And if you look very closely you can see the black cloth covered block of wood under the kickstand.

The filming started at 7am and finished at 8pm as it took all day to make a 30 second commercial! It was great fun and a fantastic experience and maybe l can do something like it again someday. Just hover and then click on the center of this page to view the commercial. Then right click and click on “Disable Content” to remove the view of the video.
