Our new staff members, Shaun and Jen, have settled in and are mak-ing a good team as they work together to tackle the increased work load the Conservancy is experiencing. The spring brought a flurry of activity as we prepared for and carried out the annual Spring Native Plant Sale at Meadowood Nursery, the plantings at the FEMA proper-ties along Kokomo Avenue and Circle Drive in Hummelstown and maintenance projects on Conservancy properties. We offer sincere thanks to the dozens of friends and members who contributed time and energy to enable these and oth-er activities to take place. Preservation work has kept Sally and the Preservation Com-mittee engaged. The grant application for the Small Valley Girl Scout property has been submitted to DCNR and we are hopeful that this will be the year we will be able to final-ize that project. Some of you have helped with contributions toward the match required for the purchase of the easement on the nearly 800 acre property in northern Dauphin County. We are determined not to disappoint you. We continue to receive numerous inquiries relating to land preservation and a number of new and/or potential projects are on the docket or being evaluated. One easement is very close to completion and you should be hearing about it soon. Our membership is growing. All in all, we are very hap-py with the progress the Conservancy is making and the directions it is taking. You can help by telling your friends and neighbors about us and by encouraging them to become a part of this grass roots organization. If one wants to make a difference in his/her own back yard, membership, and the support that it represents, is a wonderful way to start.

In Memory of Randy L. Brenner Manada Conservancy member Randy Brenner enjoyed nature and spending time outdoors, es-pecially at his home on Blue Mountain. He was a supporter of many local conservation organi-zations and served on the Board of Directors for Second Mountain Hawk Watch. He was a retired guidance counselor, having worked for over thirty years at Susquehanna Township School District. Randy will be dearly missed.

We are grateful for the memorial donations made in his honor. Robert & Sonja Brown, Thomas Burns, Evelyn Burton, James & Allyson Colestock, Craig L.

Green up your Gardening - For all you gardeners with stacks of empty plastic pots and trays at home, here is good news! You can return these items to participating Garden Centers and Nurseries where they will reuse or recycle them. Lowe’s Garden Center, Stauffer’s of Kissel Hill, and Warburton Nursery, are some of the green gardening businesses helping keep plastic out of our waste stream.

Recent Events Manada Celebrated It’s First Spring Social! Thanks to all of the Manada members and Central PA Symphony members who took part in the festivities at Manada’s first ever Spring Social this past April. We enjoyed a pot-luck dinner and an evening full of entertainment; kara-oke, joke telling, music, and poetry, at the beautiful Fort Hunter Centennial Barn on Front Street in Harrisburg. Thanks to all who came out and made it a fun night!

Sally’s Garden In May, we installed a pollinator garden in the backyard at our Hummelstown office. We’ve stocked it with donations from members’ gardens with native perennials such as anemone, bleeding heart, zigzag goldenrod, aromatic aster, sundrops, coneflower, wild geranium, columbine, foam flow-er, joe-pye, and mountain mint. We also tucked in some small shrubs: virginia sweetspire, clethra alnifolia, and foth-ergilla. This month we dedicated the garden to Sally Zaino, on be-half of all that she has dedicated to land preservation and environmental education during her tenure as Executive Di-

rector. “For Sally,” we wrote in stone, “who inspires harmony with the land.” Thank you, Sally. You are an inspiration to us all. We invite you to stop by and visit Sally’s Garden! p.s. Thank you, Will Seibert, for letting us till up the yard to plant a garden.

Senators Game Fundraiser Re-cap Thanks to those of you who purchased tickets and attended “Outdoors Night” with us at the Harrisburg Senators game on June 20th. We sold all of our 100 tickets for this fun fundraising event, with $4 of each ticket sale going to the Conservancy. Although the Senators were defeated by the Rubber Ducks, a good time was had by all at the ballpark! We still have Team Preservation t-shirts available for purchase. See Page 13 to find out how to get yours!

Congratulations to our rain barrel raffle winner,

Amy Reumann!

Thank YOU for making Manada’s 14th Spring Native Plant Sale a success!

This accomplishment would not be possible without our dedicated volunteers and our generous members. Many thanks to Meadowood Nursery for their beautiful location and help coordinating the sale, Healthy Living Kitchen for providing their delicious refreshments and Julie Moffitt for keeping us enter-tained with her music all night long on Member’s Night.

As a Manada Conservancy Member, here is your very special invitation from long-time member, Carol Buskirk: “To celebrate my birthday this year, everyone is invited for the afternoon to Mt Laurel Park in West Hanover Township. We will have food and drinks, live music, and activities for big and little kids. Here’s what we have planned: We want to encourage everyone to think about what’s important to them. Drannon, my hus-band, and I have decided that keeping family stories alive and recognizing places that are special to us are goals we want to pursue. We’re asking you to think about stories and places that are significant to you and your family. We are offering the opportunity to record a story, and we will give you your own CD of it to take with you. We want to know about your spe-cial places. They could be: Somewhere you like to go to relax and experience nature? A place where something important happened in your life? Or where you feel some connection? If you can find or draw a picture of the place, or just write a statement about it, please bring that with you to share in our Special Places Album. I’ve always had a sense of responsibility for the impact of my actions. Being married to a profes-sional working in water resources made me aware of the precarious balance of our ecosystems, and the need for environmental education. The Manada Conservancy’s mission fits perfectly with my goals. Manada Conservancy will be at my party and you can learn more about their wonderful mission and outstanding projects. In lieu of gifts, please consider a contribution to the Manada Conservancy.” When: Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 2pm Where: Mount Laurel Park,, 1175 Piketown Road, Harrisburg 17112 Please bring: Stories and photos/drawings of special places in Dauphin County For more details and to RSVP: Call 717-566-4122 or email [email protected] or visit www.manada.org/buskirk

2014 Manada Conservancy Environmental Achievement Awardees The Manada Conservancy Environmental Achievement Award recognizes the senior who has excelled

in environmental studies and who has contributed to the stewardship and protection of natural resources. Christopher Fink is a dedicated intern at the Milton Hershey School Environmental Center. From day one at the Environmental Center, he demonstrated a high level of maturity, work ethic, and lead-ership. In his three years as an intern, he planted hundreds of native trees and shrubs in riparian zones on campus, spent many hours removing invasive species and helping to manage the warm sea-son meadows. He showed initiative and earned the respect of his supervisors when offering to regu-larly assist with the mowing of the pathways in the campus meadows on Saturday mornings. Max Moyer is a senior at Lower Dauphin High School where he has created an impressive resume. His experiences include the National Honor Society and National Science Honor Society, Foreign Language Club and Math National

Honor Society. Max is a Life Scout and is currently working on his Eagle Scout project, placing dog waste stations at each of the parks and trails in Hummelstown. You may have seen him lifeguarding at the Hummelstown Swim Club over past summers. Max plans to attend UNC Wilmington where he will major in Environmental Science.

Mitchell Good is a senior at Hershey High School. Mitch is an avid hunter, fisher, and conservationist. Throughout all his life, Mitch has been involved with the environment, something about the outdoors makes him feel at home. He is involved with his local Safari Club International chapter, a non-profit organization promoting hunting and conservation. Mitch actively participates in youth days and fundraising events to benefit the chapter. He is also a board member for the Governors Advisory Council for Hunting, Fishing, and Conservation. This is his second year with the council, previously Mitchell served on the youth council. Mitch will be continuing his education at the University of Massachusetts

under the forestry and arboriculture programs. He hopes to continue learning from, and contributing to our forests and nat-ural environment for years to come.

Meet Jim Egenrieder, Manada’s Preserve Manager Jim is a Manada Board Member extraordinaire who also serves on the Finance Committee and the Preservation Committee. But what we want to highlight is that 18 months ago Jim became Mana-da’s Preserve Manager and thank goodness! Our properties never looked so good. Jim is an inspiring crew leader and has recruited a terrific volunteer team. His right hand man, Ted young, and all other preserve volunteers dive in and get the job done! One of their current projects is to open another Manada preserve to the public. Stay tuned …

A big shout out to Jim and the Preserve Maintenance Team. Thank you for your vision and hard work!

Arbor Day 2014, Streamside Planting (continued…) On April 26th, Manada and Hummelstown Borough celebrated Arbor Day 2014 at 109 N. Hanover Street, a property that was damaged during Tropi-cal Storm Lee. Fortunately, this site now has a new look thanks to our volunteer planting project that installed more than 300 PA native trees, shrubs, and flowers. This planting serves as an example of how natural best management prac-tices can be used to restore water quality, prevent streambank erosion, while also establishing habitat and beautifying the property. With the help of Hummelstown’s Shade Tree Commission and Public Works, as well as numerous local businesses and organizations, Arbor Day was a fun community event. This project was made possible by a WREN grant, funded by the League of Women Voters of PA Citizen Education Fund through a Growing Greener grant from the PA DEP, in partnership with Manada Conservancy, Hummelstown Borough, and United Water. We encourage you to watch with us as the planting grows! What bird or butterfly species have you spotted on the new plants? Keep us posted on Manada’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/manadaconservancy).

Small Valley Update We don’t get a chance to protect 762 acres of beautiful Pennsylvania forest every day, and this project is still in the forefront of our ef-forts for 2014. Our latest grant application is in, to the Department of Conserva-tion and Natural Resources (DCNR). Thanks to Shaun, all the components were completed for the April deadline. So send us your good vibes, cross your fingers, and let’s hope that this year we can be successful with this spectacular project. If we are awarded the DCNR grant, we will have covered a major portion of the cost of purchasing the conservation easement. With the additional donations we have received, we will be able to cover almost all of the remaining funding needed. Contributions are still very welcome as we strive for our goal; support for this preservation effort is a wonderful way to leave your own legacy or to remember a loved one. If you’d like to learn more, please contact Sally Zaino (717) 645-2908 or [email protected]

Logan Farm Park Update We are pleased to have received $5000 from the Paxton Creek Watershed and Educa-tion Association for the stewardship of Logan Farm Park. Their partnership is a crucial piece of the long-term protec-tion of Logan Farm Park. As you may have read in our Winter Newsletter, this 59-acre wooded space in Susquehanna Township, bordered by the Paxton Creek, is an oasis for wildlife in the center of a rapidly developing area. It was

through a cooperative effort with landowner Scott Logan and family, Paxton Creek Watershed and Education Association, Susquehanna Township, and Sus-quehanna Township Sewer Authority, that Manada Conservancy was able to preserve this space and make it available for the enjoyment of generations to come. As with all of the properties we preserve, we must ensure that we will be able to steward and protect them in perpetuity. Stewardship donations allow us to ensure easement violations are appropriately resolved, and respond to landowners’ request to exercise their rights as agreed upon in the conservation easement. This donation from PCWEA is reserved for these purposes, so that Manada Conservancy can steward and protect this conserved land. Special thanks to Bryan Genesse, Drannon Buskirk and Rob Davis of PCWEA for mak-ing this partnership possible. Shown left, TMC Office Assistant Chris Silvis receives donation from Rob Davis of PCWEA

Swatara Greenway

Swatara Greenway Receives Another Buffer Planting! Not long after completing the WREN grant funded buffer planting for the 2014 Arbor Day celebration, Manada volun-teers were already busy assisting with another streamside planting! On June 7th two side-by-side parcels next to the boat launch on Circle Drive in Hummelstown received approximately 60 seedlings. Penn State’s Greening the Lower Susquehanna Initiative developed a planting plan and provided free riparian seedlings. With the help of Manada Con-servancy volunteers, the trees and shrubs were planted, mulched and caged. These properties, having been flooded during Tropical Storm Lee, had been purchased by Hummelstown Borough through the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. We are excited to see the properties being restored for all to enjoy, and the birds are too!

Many thanks to our planting volunteers!

Spring Creek Streamside Buffer Progress In 2012 Derry Township became a Swatara Greenway Steward, agreeing to maintain 35 feet of un-mowed streamside buffer on all of their properties along the Swatara Creek, and they adopted the same protocol for Spring Creek, a tributary.

Chuck Hill, a Manada vol-unteer who helps us mon-itor conservation ease-ments every year, offered to conduct a longitudinal survey along Spring Creek to observe and report about habitat changes at a section of the creek which meets the Swattie. Here are a couple excerpts from Chuck’s June report to illustrate the details

he helps us record: “I was accompanied by Shaun Levi and Claire Maulhardt on the 6-13-14 visit. We had had a great deal of rain re-cently and the vegetation was quite lush, clearly the most lush that it has been since the survey began in 2012. There was considerable evidence that numbers of deer were bed-

ding in the protected margins…” “Claire pointed out the sharp contrast in clarity between the very muddy Swatara and the remarkably clear Spring Creek… “ This month was Chuck’s last survey report about Spring Creek because he and his wife, Sibby, are moving to the Boston area to be closer to children and grandchildren. We want to thank you, Chuck, for all your excellent help monitoring easements and protected greenway lands. We wish you and your family all the best!
