Because of your commitment to conservation and your willingness to share your resources, we are making very good progress on meeting

the $20,000 match provided by the Glatfelter Foundation. We re-quested these funds because we saw that we simply will not achieve

our 5-year objectives without them. I have previously presented our Mission and Vision and Core Values. This might be a good time to

provide a little detail about our strategic plans for Preservation and Education for the years thru 2021, and so I am providing a highly edited version in place of my usual letter. (The full details may be seen on our website,

www.manada.org.) Preservation Overarching Goal: To progress toward the creation of a network of connected wild lands, riparian buffers, and viable farmland that is permanently preserved, in order that migration

and movement corridors are supported, and local farmland is sustained. Special emphasis is given to the Swatara Greenway and the Kittatinny Ridge.

1: To preserve the natural, historic, agricultural, and scenic resources of Dauphin County.

2: To pursue the conservation of the Swatara Creek Corridor 3: To pursue the conservation of the Kittatinny Corridor 4: To provide appropriate management of owned properties, and proper monitoring of

conservation easements and fee-owned properties 5: To provide improved balance of support for our Preservation mission and acquisition

work at all levels: Staff, Board, volunteer 6: To update and review our Strategic Conservation Plan (SCP) to guide our prioritiza-

tion of projects and outreach for projects. 7: To improve the transaction and monitoring process to comply with Land Trust Alli-ance (LTA) Standards and Practices

8: To help to assure appropriate funding for preservation work 9. To assist municipalities when resources allow, and when particularly relevant to our

mission. Education Overarching Goal: To support Manada Conservancy’s mission and vision state-ment of furthering preservation and conservation through attracting, informing and engaging the

volunteers, members and communities we serve.

1: To provide at least four education programs per year, free and open to the public. 2: To develop and strengthen youth education programming

3: To increase awareness of MC Preservation work and other MC activities 4: To provide a speakers bureau

We lost a dear friend this summer. Ben Cooper, an active member and Manada Conservancy volunteer, passed away unexpectedly. Ben, a retired Lower Dauphin school teacher, was a re-

spected Hummelstown community member dedicated to many local causes including the Hum-

melstown Shade Tree Commission. Ben always had a smile and was quick to help with whatever

was needed. We got to know him well in Manada’s early years through the native plant initiative and more recently, during his time serving on our Education Committee. Ben is greatly missed

by us all and will forever remain in our hearts. Thanks to those who donated in his memory.

Thanks to our volunteers this quarter! So much thanks to give!

Many thanks to Stephanie Frank who

chose to donate her car to Manada

Conservancy through the V-DAC

vehicle donation program! http://www.v-dac.com/ Thanks to Evelyn Brown for donating a large coffee maker to

the Conservancy for upcoming events. Thank you to the Derry Township Recycling Committee for

choosing to support Manada’s mission with a donation

through The Foundation for Enhancing Communities.

Calling all tech-savvy Manada friends… With our staff having grown, so have our computer related needs and issues. We are seeking volunteers with IT skills

and/or experience with website maintenance, specifically WordPress, who we may consult in the time of need.

If interested, please contact the Conservancy office at (717) 566-4122 or [email protected].

5: To enhance the committees’ organization, improve efficiency and fulfill our education mission 6: To maintain a historical record of programs given, including contacts and participant feedback.

7: To provide an educational component to other Conservancy activities. This list does not include any of the numerous specific action items that will be required to achieve these goals, and it doesn’t include any of our strategic plan for Outreach, Fundraising, Administration, or Finance! I find

the list both daunting and exhilarating. These plans reflect just a portion of the conservation needs of Dauphin County. The urgency of the need has increased as residential and commercial development accelerates and

the need for climate resiliency increases. The Kittatinny Ridge and Swatara Greenway have become increas-ingly important to our health and happiness. We look forward to trying to preserve them and increase our ac-

cess to them, and I hope that you will aid in this effort.

PROGRAM RESCHEDULED: What are Dauphin County's Resources Worth?

Tuesday, October 24th at 7:00 PM

at the Perking Point (257 Hershey Road, Hummelstown)

Have you considered how much money we could save by preserving our resources instead of mitigating for their loss? How you as an individual could save? How clean air and water benefit our health? How much local

businesses depend on these resources, and how much protected land brings recreation to our County? Flood and pollution control, pollination, health, recreation, property values, wildlife habitat, clean air, clean water,

healthy vegetation—all of these are affected by how we treat our resources. They have a price that we don’t usually include in our bottom line.

John Rogers, of Keystone Conservation Trust, completed

the study and will present what was learned about our re-source-rich county, and how everyone from individual

landowners to corporations and municipalities can benefit from protecting these resources.

This program is free and open to the public.

Building Climate Resiliency: Community-based Solutions to a Global Challenge

Thursday, October 19th at 7:00 PM

at Derry Presbyterian Church (248 East Derry Road, Hershey) Conversations about climate change can leave people feeling depressed and somewhat helpless due to the enor-

mity of the challenge facing humanity. Media reports too often sensationalize or polarize the topic. What gets lost in the “noise” are discussions of all the innovations that are occurring around the world, often at the city or

regional level, and many stemming from grassroots initiatives. These transformations are beginning to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, helping people sustain their livelihoods and food and water supplies, and making our

surroundings healthier and more resilient. Some of these hopeful stories will be shared in this presentation.

Diane Husic returns to give us an update and overview of Climate Change, from her local as well as worldwide experience. Diane, a Pennsylvania resident who lives in the Kittatinny Corridor, is

Dean of the School of Natural and Health Sciences at Moravian College. She is deeply involved in

the science of climate change locally as well as being a representative to global climate change sum-mits representing Moravian College.

This program is free and open to the public.

Please register by contacting the Manada Conservancy office at (717) 566-4122 or [email protected].

Mark your calendar! The Native Plant Sale Committee would like all Conservancy members and friends to know that

even though fall has just arrived, planning for the spring sale is in full swing. Please put Satur-

day April 28, 2018, on your calendars and watch for updates as they arrive via email. We plan to

extend the pre-sale this year to more varieties of trees, shrubs and perennials. We will let you

know when the online catalogue is ready. This will enable you to choose some of your plants ahead of time. Our individual landscapes can contribute greatly to assisting biological diversity if we pay attention to what we plant. Please join us in these efforts to make our community a

welcoming place for insects, birds, and all manner of small creatures as well as for ourselves. We hope you will encourage your friends and neighbors to join us in these efforts as well!

Upcoming Events

Preservation Committee begins work on

updated Strategic Conservation Plan Did you ever wonder how we decide what properties to preserve, and how

we evaluate requests from landown-ers to preserve their land? The an-

swer is that we have a three-tier pro-cess: a Selection Criteria (a list of in-

formational questions based on a field visit and discussion with the landowner), a Resource Estimate

(how much will it cost us and how much staff and volunteer time will it

take), and how it ranks on our Priori-ty Map (a quantitative ranking of conservation value).

When the Preservation Committee presents a project to the Board, it is these three pieces of information that

are given to our Board of Directors, so they can make an informed decision about whether to take on the pro-

ject.

Now that our Organizational Strategic Plan has been completed, setting our goals for the next five years, it is time to update our Strategic Conservation Plan, too. In

fact, this update is one of the stated goals in our new Strategic Plan. The most in need of updating is the way

that we rank projects. A lot has changed since we created our map

in 2012, and we have new infor-mation and additional factors to include in our ranking. With the

help of our Preservation Commit-tee, we are collecting the maps

that we need, and the updated da-ta about the natural resources in

Dauphin County, so that our Board can be aware of the charac-

teristics of the County, and what areas are in most need of protection. For example, since 2012, studies

have been done showing areas of the highest climate resiliency, and showing the most important migration

corridors, as species have to relo-cate into their optimal temperature

range. In addition, we now have information about what resources have the highest economic value to

the County—how preserving some resources saves expenditures and

helps ensure safety of residents (for example, preserving forested buff-

ers for flood control). Waterways, forests, farmland, scenic and histor-

ical resources, habitat….all these characteristics go into

our ranking model and help us when we are figuring out where to focus our conservation efforts.

Once we have all the information, then our Board

works together to set ranking priorities for various fea-tures. Your responses to our recent survey also help us to know what features our members consider im-

portant. Through the magical tool of GIS mapping, we can compile combinations of features, look at single

features, or stack many features together to give us maps that help us understand the ecology and charac-

teristics of the County. We hope to

share some of this infor-

mation with you as we

work over the next months to

continue our

conservation planning.

Preservation Update

GIVE THE GIFT OF LAND AND WATER—and your holiday shopping is done!

Manada’s Pathway to Preservation initiative is designed to enable you to give a gift, or contribute,

directly to land preservation. That symbolic pathway is made of our steps along the way, as we are

able to fund projects and complete them. You can keep the momentum going by helping us take anoth-

er, and then another, step. One Footprint costs $35, but the value is priceless—land and water for the

future. It’s going fast. Give the gift that makes a difference! Please see the flier in this newsletter.
