The Gospel According to Mayberry

I trust that everyone received a blessing from last Sunday’s first in-

stallment of “The Gospel According to Mayberry.” Using the episode “Mr.

McBeevee,” we took a good look at what faith is.

The Andy Griffith Show first debuted October 3, 1960. Now why is

it that a television show can have such an impact fifty years later? To begin

with, The Andy Griffith Show is a welcome departure from most of what

we see on television today. Each episode always had a point. Furthermore,

in Mayberry, everyone tried to get along and do the right thing. Combined

with some hilarious comedy, these qualities have produced one of televi-

sion’s most memorable classics.

Along with its heart-warming appeal, The Andy Griffith Show con-

tains numerous scenes that illustrate what we believe as Christians. Over

the next three Sundays, we are going to see even more scenes that illumi-

nate our faith. They include:

October 3 “Gomer Saves Andy”

October 10 “Opie and the Bully”

October 17 “The Beauty Contest”

We will be using these particular episodes to look at qualities like gratitude,

facing the challenges of life and looking at ourselves as God sees us.

As we continue this series, I ask you to invite your friends to worship

with us. Since practically everyone loves The Andy Griffith Show, anyone

would be at home in a worship service that emphasizes some of its themes.

Most of all, pray that God would use each and every Sunday morning as an

opportunity to reach others for Him.

Open Hearts…Open Minds…Open Doors

If the church is like your family……

There are many reasons why it is not good to be an only child.

There is a special bond between siblings. Even if you do not LIKE them

very much some of the time, there is a feeling for your brother and sister that you do not have

for anyone else.

I feel that way about my church brothers and sisters. When I see them at Food Lion, or

Wal-Mart, or a football game, it is like a reunion. We laugh and hug and act as if we have not seen

each other in years. Our only bond is Archdale United Methodist Church, but it feels as if we are

greeting family members.

My husband’s father died in July. They were members of First Presbyterian Church in Fa-

yetteville. As we stood in a receiving line at the funeral home, Garret and his four siblings were

told over and over, “We go to church with your parents. Don’t worry about your Mom. We will

take good care of her.” The church provided us with lunch after the funeral in their fellowship

hall. She was showered with visits, cards and calls. We were very grateful for all of the atten-

tion given to her, but we were not surprised. You are a member of a bigger family when you join a

church, and families take care of each other.

When we came home, there were 8 sympathy cards in the mailbox for Garret. I had almost

forgotten in my thoughts for my mother-in-law that OUR church was praying for Garret. Many

people told me that they were praying at the exact time of the funeral for us. Looking back, I do

not think that Garret could have read the 91st Psalm at the cemetery, his voice quivering a little at

the beginning, then getting stronger and certain, without those prayers from his church family.

Since then he has received about 20 cards, many from people that he does not even really know in

the congregation. It meant a lot to him to know that people care about him and love him for just

being a member of the church family.

Think about your family tree. Some cousins are close to you, some might be obnoxious, and

some might be downright hard to get along with! Families are not perfect, but they are your sup-

port system. The same can be said of your church family. We are flawed individuals. We are not

perfect, or we would not need the church. We are sinners, but we are brothers and sisters in Je-

sus Christ.

I have heard people say that they can stay home and watch a church service on television on

Sunday morning. Why should they get up and come to church? No disrespect to church television,

but they are NOT your family. They cannot reach out and hug you, take you out to dinner, or be

there to rejoice or to grieve with you. In this world, I will take all of the “family” I can get.

No, we are not perfect, but we are your family. Come get to know

all of your “cousins” at church on Sunday mornings. I’ll see you in church,

brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, adopted parents, and assorted

cousins.

Keep the faith.

Cheryl

Dear Friends at AUMC,

Thank you so much for the school supplies you collected during our Fill the Bus campaign! Through the generosity of your congregation

and others, we received enough supplies for over 250 students.

Archdale Elementary School was thrilled to receive the book bags you prepared.

Now we can be sure these students will have the vital items for school.

What sets the CISRC program apart from others is that we work

closely with school personnel to identify & meet the needs of specific students. After those needs are met, we distribute extra supplies

among the schools so teachers will have a cache to draw from during the year.

Your support is vital to CISRC, our community,

and our future.
