GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME Please stand

2

I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed, the new community of love in Christ’s communion bread.

4

And thus with joy we meet our Lord, his presence, always near, is in such friendship better known: we see, and praise him here.

3

As Christ breaks bread and bids us share each proud division ends. The love that made us, makes us one, and strangers now are friends.

5

Together met, together bound, we’ll go our different ways, and as his people in the world we’ll live and speak his praise.

Brian A. Wren (b. 1936)

THE GREETING AND WELCOME

The president welcomes the people and says: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Sit or kneel Choir Lord have mercy upon us,

Christ have mercy upon us, Lord have mercy upon us.

Communion Service in A – Harold Darke (1892-1983)

We have a great high priest who ever lives to intercede for us. Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins in full assurance of faith. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The president pronounces the absolution, and all respond Amen.

THE HYMN OF PRAISE (GLORIA) Please stand Choir Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God's people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Communion Service in A minor - Darke

THE COLLECT O God, welcoming refuge for the outcast, and upholder of justice for the oppressed: maintain the hope of the poor, so that the time may soon come when no one need want for food and shelter, and all will learn to share freely following the example of your Son, who gave his very self; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Please sit FIRST READING: 1 Samuel 1.4-20 Read by Andrew Gray

4On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; 5but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb. 6Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb. 7So it went on year after year; as often as she went up to the house of the LORD, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. 8Her husband Elkanah said to her, ‘Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?’

9After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the LORD. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. 10She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly. 11She made this vow: ‘O LORD of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.’

12As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli observed her mouth.13Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. 14So Eli said to her, ‘How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.’15But Hannah answered, ‘No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the LORD. 16Do not regard your

4

servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time.’ 17Then Eli answered, ‘Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him.’ 18And she said, ‘Let your servant find favour in your sight.’ Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer.

19 They rose early in the morning and worshipped before the LORD; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her. 20In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, ‘I have asked him of the LORD.’

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM: SONG OF HANNAH Please sing the response after the cantor, then as indicated

My heart exults in the Lord: my strength is exalted in my God. My mouth derides my enemies: because I rejoice in your salvation. There is no Holy One like you, O Lord: nor any Rock like you, our God. For you are a God of knowledge: and by you our actions are weighed. Response The bows of the mighty are broken: but the feeble gird on strength. Those who were full now search for bread: but those who were hungry are well fed. The barren woman has borne sevenfold: but she who has many children is forlorn. Both the poor and the rich are of your making: you bring low and you also exalt. Response You raise up the poor from the dust: and lift the needy from the ash heap. You make them sit with the rulers: and inherit a place of honour. For the pillars of the earth are yours: and on them you have set the world.

SECOND READING: Hebrews 10.11-14, 19-25 Read by Canon Campbell Bairstow

11And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. 12But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, ‘he sat down at the right hand of God’, 13and since then has been waiting ‘until his enemies would be made a footstool for his

5

feet.’ 14For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.

19 Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE GRADUAL HYMN Please stand

2

Your truth unchanged has ever stood, you save all those who on you call, to those yet seeking you are good, to those who find you, all in all.

4

For you our restless spirits yearn, whatever comes, until the last, glad when your presence we discern, blest when our faith can hold you fast.

3

We taste you, Lord, the living bread, and long to feast upon you still, we drink of you, the fountainhead, and thirst our souls from you to fill.

5

For ever, Jesus, with us stay, make all our moments calm and bright, chase the dark night of sin away, shed on this world your holy light.

THE GOSPEL Remain standing The Cantor introduces the acclamation, then all repeat:

Cantor Be watchful, pray without ceasing, that you may be worthy to stand

before the Son of Man. Alleluia!

The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Mark: 13.1-11 Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

1As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!’ 2Then Jesus asked him, ‘Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.’

3 When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4‘Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?’ 5Then Jesus began to say to them, ‘Beware that no one leads you astray. 6Many will come in my name and say, “I am he!” and they will lead many astray. 7When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. 8For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs.

9 ‘As for yourselves, beware; for they will hand you over to councils; and you will be beaten in synagogues; and you will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them. 10And the good news must first be proclaimed to all nations. 11When they bring you to trial and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say; but say whatever is given you at that time, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.

For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

THE SERMON The Ven. Ray McInnes

NICENE CREED Please stand We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

7

true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Please sit or kneel Led by Pat Blake

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. At the end Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE NOTICES

THE GREETING OF PEACE Please stand We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. All may exchange a sign of peace

THE OFFERTORY During the hymn, an offering is received to support the Cathedral’s ministry. On average our congregants contribute $20 each. Please be as generous as you can. Thank you for your gift. Tap and Go facilities are available on the plates.

8

Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim: for lo, between our sins and their reward we set the Passion of thy Son our Lord.

And then for those, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing Presence we appeal: O fold them closer to thy mercy’s breast, O do thine utmost for their souls’ true weal; from tainting mischief keep them pure and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to persevere.

And so we come: O draw us to thy feet, most patient Saviour, who canst love us still; and by this food, so aweful and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill: in thine own service make us glad and free, and grant us never more to part with thee.

William Bright (1824–1901)

Last year, the Foundation made generous grants of $200,000 to support the Cathedral’s rich musical life. In 2018 we are hoping to increase that figure. The grants fund scholarships that directly benefit the Cathedral’s musicians: most importantly, the musical formation and education of our boy and girl choristers. In order to sustain such a significant level of financial commitment, the Foundation fully relies on the support of generous donors.
