EDITORIALEDITORIAL

As millions of AmericanCatholics prepare their col-

lective warm welcome for PopeFrancis, the 266th and currenthead of the Catholic Church, Iwould like to focus on the be-havior of some of our religionleaders.

To many people, religion isan organized collection of be-liefs and cultural systems that re-late humanity to an order ofexistence. These may be abstractand complex issues that the vastmajority of worshippers are un-able to understand, but feel verycomfortable and obliged to ob-serve.

It is perhaps the very reasonwhy religion always attracts par-ticular type of personalities asleaders. These are usually ex-tremely strong and inspired indi-viduals who attract and appealto many.

However, in recent years itwould appear that more andmore of these personalities are

stepping into the pulpits of thedozens of churches that springup all too frequently in our com-munities. For example, BostonRoad and White Plains Road inthe Bronx, as well as ChurchStreet and Flatbush Avenue inBrooklyn, seem to be over pop-ulated with churches -- eachwith its own tightly controlledregime of pastors, bishops andrubber-stamping boards.

We are talking about sev-eral thousands men and womenexercising their pastoral controlof congregations, big and smallalike, entrusted to him/her ac-cording to the teachings of theirrespective denomination. For themost part, these are usually peo-ple of very high moral and ethi-cal standard.

However, with total controlover the offering collected andother income, our pastors andother church leaders are well re-warded and encouraged finan-cially. As it now stands, it would

appear that every so-called“spiritual” man or woman witha “calling,” a loud voice or bigmouth, is setting up his or herown little church to take advan-tage of a very lucrative opportu-nity, especially in the blackcommunities.

It would appear that as anincreasing number of people

continue to serve as religiousleaders, more reports of pastorsand bishops and men of thecloths are being arrested, charged and found guilty of var-ious criminal activities, includ-ing murder, rape and fraud.

We know those wrongdoersand pastors with questionablecharacters are in the minority, but the rate at which they arespreading their evil is marringthe reputation of the church.

As Senator Cory Booker(D), a Baptist and former Mayorof Newark, NJ, and more re-cently a Senator in Congress, said: "Don't speak to me aboutyour religion; first show it to mein how you treat other people.

Don't preach to me yourpassion for your faith; teach methrough your compassion foryour neighbors. In the end, I'mnot as interested in what youhave to tell or sell as I am inhow you choose to live andgive."

Pastor should stop spreading their evil spirit

The leader is the focal point ofchange for the individual fol-lower or group of followers withthe followers taking no action inthe absence of the leader’s influ-ence on the followers.

The trait approach to defin-ing leadership also suggests thatleadership is available only tosome individuals who possessthe necessary inborn traits orcharacteristics.

The alternative to the traitdefinition of leadership is theview of leadership as a process, involving interaction betweenthe leader, the follower, and thesituation.

Considering leadership as aprocess implies that it involves arelationship between the leaderand the follower characterizedby social transactions.

Leadership can be exercisedwith one follower or with agroup of followers.

The concept of process alsosuggests that leadership is a bidi-rectional exchange between theleader and the follower. The fol-lower influences the leader justas much as the leader influencesthe follower.

The situation determines thedegree of interaction between theleader and the follower andwhether the relationship is basedon the leader’s ability to domi-nate and control or the leader’sneed to elicit cooperation fromfollowers through persuasion orexample.

The process definition of

leadership concludes that anyonecan learn the skills and tech-niques necessary to be an effec-tive leader.

Both the trait and processdefinitions of leadership assumethat leadership involves chang-ing the behaviors of followers tomove the group from its currentstate to a desired future state.

The leader has an objectivefor the followers that may be setby the leader or by the organiza-tion. The leader then engages inthe behaviors necessary to moti-vate a change in the behaviors ofthe followers required to achievethe objective.

By Patrick MaitlandStreet Hype EditorThe Emmanuel Seventh-day Adventist

Church on Laconia Avenue in theBronx is not holy ground for its embattledpastor.

A Bronx Supreme Court Judge hasorder Pastor Ivan Plummer to cease leader-ship of the church and allow the originalBoard of Trustees to take control.

Leaders say the two-year battle withthe pastor for control of the church hassapped its “spiritual growth and member-ship.”

“Defendant Plummer is hereby re-strained and enjoined from directly or indi-rectly removing, terminating or relievingany members of the Board of Trustees forhis or her position without further orderfrom this Court,” according to a Aug. 24court order by Judge Alison Y. Tuitt.

The Court further ruled that a meetingheld by Plummer on May 5, 2013 and the

elections of a new Board of Trustees is nulland void as there were no judicial findingthat the current Board of Trustees as setforth in the Certificate of Incorporation areno longer the Board of Trustees.

“Consequently, Plummer was not per-mitted to unilaterally decide that those in-dividuals are no longer Trustees and holdan election to elect new Board in blatant at-tempt to circumvent this Court’s decision,”Judge Tuitt explained.

Judge Tuitt also directed Plummer topay $5,000 from his personal fund to coverthe legal expenses incurred by the membersof the Board of Trustees as the pastorknowingly violated the decision and orderof the said Court dated April 16, 2013.

The judge warned Plummer that failureto comply with her order may result in fur-ther civil contempt, civil sanctionsand/fines and/or criminal contempt.

“We are very happy that the issues arebeing resolved as the spiritual growth and

membership of the church were severely af-fected,” a member of the church’s Board ofTrustees, Everton Forsyphe, told StreetHype.

Forsythe noted that Plummer failed torespect the wishes of the members on theleadership of the church.

In 2013, the Bronx Supreme Court in-tervened in the ongoing financial disputebetween the Board of Trustees and PastorPlummer.

According to court documents ob-tained by Street Hype, the Board and themembers alleged that Plummer, with thehelp of other church officers, misappropri-ated and embezzled church funds and hadtaken over sole control of all church assets.

Plummer was unavailable for com-ments at press time.

The Emmanuel Seventh-day AdventistChurch, located at 3301 Laconia Ave., wasestablished in 1997.

Police Commissioner William Bratton is call-ing for "political ownership" over celebra-

The 43-year-old died from his injuries last week, andpolice are still looking for his killer.Gabay's death is the latest in a string of violentincidents surrounding J'ouvert in recent years.

Bratton said he plans to meet with commu-nity leaders to discuss next year's event and willdemand a permit be requested."Right now, nobody wants to claim responsibil-ity for being the leader of an event that they en-couraged tens of thousands of people to attend,"he said. "Politically, the City Council members,Assembly members from that area also aregoing to have to take ownership of event occur-ring in their neighborhood and some of the as-sociated behavior."

"I'm all for that. I look forward to workingwith the commissioner," said City CouncilmanJumaane Williams of Brooklyn. "As long as

we're not saying the event has to stop. As longas we're not saying that the permit is somehowan impediment for people to get this event to gooff." Meanwhile, a wake will be held for Gabayon Friday at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Clin-ton Hill, followed by a funeral Saturday.

Subway Assaults On the RiseAssaults in the subway are on the

rise. According to NYPD TransitBureau Chief Joseph Fox, there havebeen more than 1,500 felony crimescommitted in the transit systemthrough August of this year.

That's a 7.4 percent increase over thesame time period last year. Fox says there

have been 47 more robberies so far thisyear, an increase of 16 percent.

He says two reasons for the increase incrime are the surge in people bringing elec-tronic devices on the subway and the num-ber of sleeping passengers.

"While we're comfortable and happythat people are so comfortable on our sub-

ways to take out their electronics, to usethem and to become inattentive, we stillstrongly caution people to think aboutwhere and when and how they hold theirproperty," says NYPD Transit Bureu ChiefJoseph Fox.

Fox also says enforcing lower level of-fenses like evading the subway fare and rid-ing between cars has led to 28 illegal gunarrests through August.

That's a 59 percent increase over lastyear.

If someone owes you money and you haven’t had any successgetting this person or company to pay you can start a courtcase. When you start the court case you are the plaintiff. Theperson you sue is called the defendant. You may start the caseagainst more than one defendant as long as the reasons you aresuing them are connected. If you win the case you will be ableto get a judgment against the defendant. Then you can collectthe money you are owed.

If you are owed rent money, or maintenance or child sup-port, this is not the right section for you. Visit Homes & Evic-tions or Families & Children.

Which Court to Start the CaseThere are many different courts in New York State that can de-cide cases about money problems. But not every court can de-cide every case. Some courts can only decide cases up to acertain amount of money. For example, the Civil Court of theCity of New York can only decide cases up to $25,000. WhileSupreme Courts can decide cases suing for an unlimitedamount of money. For help learning which court to start yourcase go to The Right Court for Your Problem. If you want tostart your case in Small Claims Court (cases up to $5,000), theinformation in this section is not right for you.

Besides starting the case in the right court, you have tostart the case in the right place. This is called venue. You canstart the case in the county where you or the defendant live. Or,you can start the case in a county where you or the defendantwork or do business. Or, you can start the case in the countywhere the dispute started, like where a contract was entered orbroken.

The Summons and ComplaintTo start a case for money, the plaintiff fills out forms called

a Summons and a Complaint, or a Summons with Notice. ASummons and a Summons with Notice both say the name ofthe court; the names of the plaintiff and defendant - these arewritten at the top of the form in a box called the caption; theIndex Number or Case Number of the case - this number isgiven to you by the court; a space for the date the summons isfiled with the court; and your name, address and telephonenumber, along with your signature.

If you choose to start the case with a Summons with No-tice, then the Summons with Notice also tells the defendantwhy you are suing and the amount of money you are asking thecourt for. The Summons with Notice tells the defendant that heor she must demand a complaint or the plaintiff will ask the

court for a judgment. If the defendant demands a complaint, you have 20 days to deliver one to the defendant or the casemay be dismissed.

If you choose to start the case with a Summons and aComplaint, the Complaint tells the defendant and the court allabout the case. Like all legal papers, the Complaint should betyped or printed neatly in English, in black ink, on 8 ½ x11 inchpaper, double spaced, using one side of the paper only. Papersshould be stapled together. The plaintiff tells his or her story inthe complaint using numbered paragraphs (1, 2, 3, 4, 5...). Thefirst numbered paragraph says who you are, like: “I am JohnSmith and I am the plaintiff in this case.”

Then, who the defendant is, what happened and when, what each defendant did, and how this hurt you. Each para-graph tells one short, but important, part of the story. The Com-plaint should end with a paragraph that says what the plaintiffwants the Court to do, like give the plaintiff a judgment againstthe defendant for xxx dollars. Many courts have samples ontheir websites or can give you one at the courthouse or CourtHelp Center. Here is an wexample from the New York CountySupreme Court.

Make enough copies of the court papers for yourself andeach defendant. The Court gets the original papers. You cancontact the court to see if it has a form for you, where you goto file your papers, how the filing fee must be paid, and if youneed anything else, like a Request for Judicial Intervention(RJI) form.

To start the case, go to the courthouse and pay the filingfee and get your Index Number or Docket Number. If you can’tafford to pay the court fees, you can ask for a fee waiver. Putthe Index or Docket number and the date of the filing of thesummons on all the sets of the papers. In some Counties andCase Types you can E-file your papers over the internet.

Now you are ready to deliver the papers to the defendant. This is called service and it is very important that it is done theright way. It is also important that you file proof of how the pa-pers were delivered.

What Happens NextDepending on how the papers are served, the defendant has ei-ther 20 or 30 days to serve and file an Answer or to ask thecourt to dismiss the case by making a motion. A defendant asksthe court to dismiss the case when he or she thinks there is areason for the court to end the case right away.

By Senator Rev. Rubén DíazDistrict 32 Bronx County, New York

You should know that Robert Johnsonhas been the Bronx District Attorney

since 1989, and that after 26 years as theBronx’s top Prosecutor (the longest servingDistrict Attorney in office in any of NewYork City’s five counties) Mr. Johnsonwould like to step down and seek a nomina-tion as a New York State Supreme CourtJudge.

You should also know that because ofthis, there has been criticism of Robert John-son – and one of the criticisms is that he hasone of the lowest criminal conviction ratesof all of the District Attorneys in the fiveboroughs.

You should know that throughout theyears, members of our community and somenews reporters have been accusing the crim-inal justice system of discriminating againstminority communities – especially ouryouth.

We have seen demonstration afterdemonstration in different parts of the Citywhere community leaders demand the bettertreatment and the end of the unequal en-forcement of the law for minorities.

We have read columns and editorialsfrom different publications and news re-porters criticizing how minorities have beentargeted, arrested for non-violent crimes, prosecuted and sent to prison.

We have seen statistic after statisticabout the increase of the population in theNew York State’s prisons showing how theyare packed with Black and Hispanic people– especially our youth.

We have heard sharp criticism againstdifferent District Attorneys who have beenaccused of discriminating against Black andHispanic youth, and how these same DistrictAttorneys use a double standard of prosecu-tion just to obtain high rates of conviction.

On the other hand, when we look atthose who are fighting against and accusingthe system of using a double standard topack our jails with Black and Hispanicyouth, those same reporters and communityleaders who have been fighting to changeour laws so our youth won’t go to jail - thoseare the same people who are constantlydemonstrating against the system becauseaccording to them, the system is unjust toour minority community – especially ourBlack and Hispanic youth.

But, surprise, surprise! Those same reporters, news stations,

newspapers and community leaders are thesame ones now accusing Bronx District At-torney Robert Johnson of being ineffectivebecause his rate of conviction is less than theother District Attorneys – especially com-pared to the District Attorneys in Queens andStaten Island.

It is important for you to know thatwhat dignifies Bronx District AttorneyRobert Johnson and what makes him standout is his lack of desire to have a great recordof conviction at the expense of sendingmembers of our community to jail for non-violent crimes.

Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnsonhas never concentrated on benefitting him-self by getting a high conviction rate. In-stead, he has been making sure that ourcommunity – especially Black and Hispanicyouth are treated with the same standard asothers are treated.

Robert Johnson was never interested insending anyone to jail just to boost his ownrecord of conviction.

Ladies and gentlemen, even thoughsome people judge a great District Attorneyby his or her record of conviction, there areothers who judge them by their fairness andtheir ability to see the bigger picture. And Ibelieve that Bronx District Attorney RobertJohnson qualifies for the latter.

Johnson and His Detractors

Bronx District Attorney Robert John-son Wins Democratic Nod for StateSupreme Court. The nomination pavesthe way for Democratic Party leadersto bypass voters and handpick his re-placement. Johnson had been runningunopposed for re-election but said lastweek that he would prefer to serve as ajustice instead. He said he would endhis bid for re-election once he won thecourt nomination. Now, Democraticleaders in the Bronx can select John-son’s replacement on the ballot for dis-trict attorney. That candidate is all butassured victory in the Nov. 3 electionbecause the borough is heavily Demo-cratic. Several dozen judicial delegates, elected by voters in September, gath-ered at a Bronx event hall Thursdaynight to name six local candidates forthe state Supreme Court in the bor-ough. The nominees will be on the No-vember ballot.

BEAUTY CARE

-

Courtsey of www.haircareguide.com

The following are some basic hair care tipsthat you can use to improve the health and

look of your hair.General

A healthy lifestyle will mean healthier hair foryou. Excessive stress, smoking, not exercisingand not eating nutritiously are not healthy foryour hair.

Get enough sleep.Hair Products (Gel, mouse, hair spary...)Avoid using hair styling products with alcoholwhich dries out hair.

Avoid puting hair styling products di-rectly on your scalp; if you put it on yourscalp you'll clog the pores on your head.

SwimmingBefore entering a pool, wet your hair so yourhair will soak up the initial water instead ofthe chlorinated water.

When swimming where a cap to protectyour hair from chlorinated water, if youchoose not to wear a cap make sure you sham-poo and condition your hair right after you aredone swimming.

DryingHot air can be damaging to your hair so whenusing a hair dryer use the cool setting.

Don't leave the blowdryer in one spot formore than a few seconds, keep it moving andat a good distance away from your hair.

To speed up the drying process, pat yourhair dry with a towell and let the remainingmoisture in your hair dry naturally.

Gently use your fingers or a pick to un-tangle any knots while your hair is drying.

Combing/BrushingUse a brush whose bristles are made from nat-ural animal hairs, it is softer and more flexi-ble, which means less damage will be done toyour hair.

Hair is most fragile when it is wet soavoid brushing or combing when it's wet, orelse it will cause breakage. Wait until yourhair is almost completely dry before brushingit.

Use brushes/combs with widely spacedbristles/teeth and smooth tips. Sharp toothcombs can damage your hair, cause split ends, and scratch your scalp.

To keep your brushes and combs clean,

wash them weekly using soap or shampoo.Comb your hair to remove any tangles

before brushing it.Begin by combing your hair gently at the

ends to get any tangles out and work your wayup to the base of your hair. Alwaysbrush/comb with a downwards stroke.

Avoid using plastic brushes/combswhich create static electricity

Shampooing and ConditioningBuy shampoos & conditioners that matchyour hair type. Trial and error is the best wayto find out what specific hair product is bestfor your hair.

Shower with warm water; hot water candry and/or irritate the scalp.

It is important to wash your hair; sham-pooing removes dirt, dead skin cells, hair oils, any hair products you may put into your hair.

When shampooing, rinse your hair outbefore applying any shampoo to remove anydust, dirt, and any other foreign items, thenapply the shampoo onto your scalp and mas-sage it gently with your finger tips and workyour way outwards. After you are done makesure that you thouroughly rinse out your hairto remove any shampoo residue that may beleft. Shampoo residue may dry your scalp/hairand or attract dirt. It is recommended that youonly lather once to avoid drying your hair out.If you have oily hair, lathering again maystimulate your oil glands to create even moreoil than normal.

You should wash your hair as often asyou feel necessary to keep it clean but a gen-eral rule for oily hair is that you should washit every day or every other day and for dryhair only wash it 2-3 times a week.

KINGSTON, JAMAICA:

Dominic Brooks, more popularly knownas Vyral, was born to Peter Brooks and

Suzanne Saunders on May 14, 1990. Do-minic is a 25 year old Jamaican songwriterand singjay who hails from the Capital City,Kingston.

The term singJay is a colloquial one, which refers to an artist who merges the gapbetween a singer and a deejay, while a deejayis one who performs the Jamaican nativegenre of music, Dancehall.

Dominic began his musical career at St.Georges College (2002-2007), where he gar-nered vast admiration for his lyricalfreestyles and delivery. It wasn't until early2010 however, that Dominic went commer-cial as 'Kronik', with his breakthrough single"Nah Go See We Fail", produced byG3Musik.

This track, being a motivational one,was used as the anthem for the Jamaica na-tional Under 17 World Cup qualifying cam-paign that year. Riding this wave, Kronikwas back in the studio, this time with Troy-ton Rami of Black Shadow Records inMiami, Florida. This record label is famousfor the classic 'Buzz Riddim', which featuresrenowned acts like Sizzla, Mad Cobra, andSean Paul's smash hit "Gimme Di Light".

Rami and Kronik released a well receivedtrack entitled "Shake It" in late 2011. Thetrack made its way up the Music WorldRadio's Top 20 charts, peaking at #2. In thatsame year, Kronik also made his debut ap-pearance on 'The greatest one night reggaeshow', more popularly known as the infa-mous "Sting".

In 2012, Kronik changed his name toVyral, and has been working on building hisnew brand ever since. This feat has beenfilled with several challenges, from the lackof having an organized structure, to industrybiases, among many other setbacks, butthese challenges played a vital role in theconception of Vyral's renewed approach tothe music business.

This renewed approach led Vyral toalign his expertise with a team of otheryoung, passionate and talented minds, namely G3Musik, Short Filmz Ja, Krayz,Slighce and Razzy.

Together they shared the same vision ofa moral and value based movement to createtheir own structure, growing and learning to-gether, honing their skills, and embracingtheir worth.

In August and September, Vyral had a 3week stint in Tampa, where he performed atClub Celebritys for an event called "Cham-

pagne Campaign", and had a couple inter-views with Tropical Vybz Radio. Outside ofhis media obligations while in the SunshineState, Vyral was concurrently working on hisupcoming EP, "Musical Deliverance", voic-ing tracks at Rimz's home studio. Musicaldeliverance will be released later this year.

After 7 years in the business, Vyral ex-pressed that through his in depth observa-tions and research into the industry, he hasnoticed a deficit in the nurturing and guid-ance of young talent towards maximizingtheir potential, as there is no core develop-mental structure in place. "The music indus-try in sweet Jamaica is crying for moreintelligent professionals with morals andstandards, and that is the foundation that myteam and I are building.", said the Singjay. This displeasure has sparked what he and histeam call the "HooliGang" movement.

This movement, which represents tal-ent, determination, teamwork, humility, in-telligence, professionalism, morality andvision, stems from the premise of being 'arebel with a cause'.

Vyral's work can be found on Youtube,Soundcloud, among other music spaces, andhe can be contacted through his manager,Giovanni "Rimz" Ashman, at [email protected].

Dear MT: A variety of factors can contribute to lowself-esteem, including (but certainly notlimited to) poor relationships with parentsor siblings, being the victim of a physically, sexually, or mentally abusive relationship,or experiencing racist or discriminatorypractices in your personal or professionallife.

High self-esteem evolves from view-ing yourself as a unique, valuable, andworthwhile person, and is not dependent onhow other people view you.

You are your greatest asset and canstart improving upon your self-esteemtoday by: Believing in yourself; Letting goof past hurts and forgiving others; Lovingand accepting yourself unconditionally;Believing in your dreams and persisting tomake your dreams become reality; Plan-

1. CUMINTurmeric is one of the most powerful spicesyou can use in your cooking, and it turnsout that it can also protect you from breastcancer. This is because of curcumin, a com-pound found in turmeric. If you want to in-crease your intake of curcumin, you maywish to take a supplement on top of usingturmeric in your cooking. The bodyprocesses the supplement fairly well.

2. GARLICAny excuse to eat garlic bread is a goodone, right? Garlic contains allyl sulfide, acomponent that impacts cell cycling. Whenthe process of cell cycling goes wrong, breast cancer cells develop. Garlic can stopthis cycle from turning regular cells into

cancerous cells.

3. APPLESWell, that heading may be a bit misleading.Though the fruit of the apple can help pro-tect your body against cancer, the most im-portant part of this fruit is the peel. The peelof an apple is full of antioxidants, chemicalcompounds that can keep free radicals outof your body and reduce the risk of the de-velopment of cancerous cells.

For best results, make sure you use or-ganic apples. Conventional apples mayhave tons of pesticides on the peel.

4. POMEGRANATESThere is not a huge body of research look-ing at how pomegranate can affect the de-

velopment of cancer, but what scientistshave discovered so far is quite promising.A chemical compound found in pomegran-ates has been linked to a decrease in thegrowth and reproduction of cancerous cells. This effect is especially prominent with es-trogen-dependent cancers, such as breastand ovarian cancer. If you do not like thefruit, try drinking pomegranate juice or eat-ing pomegranate seeds.

The healthier you can make your diet, the more prepared your body should be tofight off any cancerous cells that come itsway.
