MAYOR DE BLASIO IS
NEW YORK'S TOP JERKMayor Bill de Blasio (with trophy) proved he was New York's 'top jerk' when he successfully
defended the Celebrity Quick-Fire Challenge title he won in 2013 at the Grace Jamaican
Jerk festival at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens. Mayor de Blasio easily defeated Miss Universe
Jamaica, Kaci Fennell with his New York Jerk Chicken "Swagga" Sandwich. Looking on
are First Lady Chirlane I. McCray (r) and former councilwoman Una S.T. Clarke.

Bobbi-Kristina
Brown diesBobbi Kristina Brown, the daughter
of Whitney Houston and Bobby
Brown, died on Sunday, more than
five months after being found unre-
sponsive in her Roswell, Georgia
home. She was 22 years old.
"Bobbi Kristina Brown passed
away Sunday, July, 26 2015, sur-
rounded by her family. She is fi-
nally at peace in the arms of God.
We want to again thank everyone
for their tremendous amount of love
and support during these last few
months," a statement from the
Houston family said.
Brown, an aspiring actress and
singer, was found in her bathtub by
a friend, Max Lomas, and her part-
ner Nick Gordon on Jan. 31 and
taken to a local hospital, according
to police.
Sources later told ABC News
that she was moved to the Neurol-
ogy Intensive Care Unit of Emory
University Hospital a few days
later, and then to a rehab facility in
late March.
In late June, her aunt Pat
Houston said Brown was moved to
hospice care after her condition
worsened.
"Despite the great medical
care at numerous facilities, Bobbi
Kristina Brown's condition has con-
tinued to deteriorate. ... She has
been moved into hospice care. Wethank everyone for their support
and prayers. She is in God's hands
now," she said in a statement.
Brown was discovered almost
exactly three years after her mother
was found unresponsive in a tub at
the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Califor-
nia. Houston died on Feb. 11, 2012
at the age of 48.

The United States filed a complaint seeking
to permanently bar a former Staten Island,New York, man and the tax preparation busi-
ness he operates from preparing federal tax re-turns for others, the Justice Department
announced recently. The civil complaint against Ranti Azeez-
Taiwo and his business, Lot Associates Inc.,
was filed on Monday in the U.S. District Court
for the Eastern District of New York. Thecomplaint alleges that Azeez-Taiwo preparesfederal income tax returns for customers thatunderstate their correct tax liabilities.
The government’s suit alleges that the un-derstatements are the result of fabricated or in-
flated itemized deductions, particularlycharitable deductions and unreimbursed em-ployee business expense deductions, which
are claimed on Schedule A, and sole-propri-etorship business expenses, which are claimed
on Schedule C.According to the complaint, an under-
cover Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agentprovided Azeez-Taiwo with information thatshould have resulted in a tax return showing
more than $500 in tax due to be paid, butAzeez-Taiwo instead prepared a return claim-
ing a refund of more than $500.The suit contends that in January 2013, a
grand jury indicted Azeez-Taiwo on 30 counts
of willfully aiding and assisting in the prepa-ration of false federal income tax returns for
tax years 2006 through 2010. The complaintfurther alleges that Azeez-Taiwo was ulti-mately convicted on multiple counts and on
March 6, 2014, was sentenced to serve 18months in prison. This civil suit seeks to bar
Azeez-Taiwo from ever preparing federal taxreturns for others again.
The IRS estimates that Azeez-Taiwo hasprepared more than 7,000 tax returns since2006, the complaint alleges. The complaint
further contends that the IRS has audited orexamined over 250 returns prepared by Azeez-
Taiwo and the total tax deficiency for those re-
turns alone exceeds $773,000. According tothe complaint, Azeez-Taiwo’s conduct could
have caused more than $773,000 in harm tothe U.S. Treasury.
Return preparer fraud is one of the IRS’Dirty Dozen Tax Scams for 2015. The IRShas some tips on its website for choosing a tax
preparer, and has launched a free directory of federal tax preparers. In the past decade, the
Tax Division has obtained injunctions againsthundreds of unscrupulous tax preparers andtax scheme promoters. Information about
these cases is available on the Justice Depart-ment’s website.

shot and killed in the Bronx. It happenedaround 5 a.m.in Baychester, near the corner
of Ely Avenue and Adee Avenue.
Police responded to a call and found23-year-old Jordan Jackwett shot in the
head. He was taken to the hospital, wherehe was pronounced dead.
An 18-year-old man was also shot in
the leg. He is in stable condition. Officials
said the men were sitting in a car when an-
other man came up to them and startedshooting.
Annette Leeming-Vick, a family friend
of one of the victims, said her own son was
dropped off by a friend near the shooting
moments before it happened.
"He dropped off my son a few doorsaway from where they made the turn, and
he was coming in the house, and my son
says that he heard the noise," she said. "It's
just sad, and you know, I look at it that i tcould have been my son. What if my sonhadn't gotten out of the car at the house, and
he went there and he could have been killed,
too." No word yet on any suspects.

Bronx
Unemployment
Drops Again
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
is praising new job numbers from the
New York State Department of Labor, which show another drop in the borough’s
unemployment rate and a significant in-crease in the county’s labor participation
rate.
“We are creating more jobs in The
Bronx, and more and more Bronxites arefinding work,” said Bronx Borough Presi-
dent Ruben Diaz Jr. “We still have work to
do, but the work we are doing is have a real
effect on the economic outlook of The
Bronx.”Newly released statistics from the New
York State Department of Labor show The
Bronx unemployment rate at 7.8% for June
2015, down from 9.7% in June 2014 and
down from a peak of 13.9% in January2010. In addition, these numbers indicate
that roughly 20,500 more Bronx residents
are employed now than in June 2014, andthat the overall Bronx labor force grew by
roughly 10,000 individuals over the sametime period.
The Department of Labor’s complete
release can be found at
http://on.ny.gov/1HRKDx1.
Since Borough President Diaz took of-
fice in 2009, The Bronx has seen more than$7 billion in total development, which has
led to the creation of over 15,000 new jobs.
In addition, a new partnership announced by
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced in
August between the New York State Depart-ment of Labor and the Bronx Overall Eco-
nomic Development Corporation, as part of
the “NY Works,” program is placing Bronx
residents in these jobs, helping to ensure that
new development here benefits everyone, especially Bronxites.

Sheldon Silver Loses Bid
To Get Indictment Tossed
ANew York federal judge refused Friday
to dismiss the criminal indictment
against former New York State AssemblySpeaker Sheldon Silver, saying Silver's alle-gations of shortcomings in the indictment
missed the mark.
Fast-food workers in New York
state may soon be making $15 an
hour.
A proposal to set a $15 minimumwage for workers at fast-food restau-
rants with 30 or more locations was
endorsed Wednesday by a state labor
board.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo, whose admin-
istration must approve the idea, has
signaled his support.
The wage hike would be phased inover three years in New York City and
over six elsewhere in the state.
Many workers say the increase
would allow them to cope with high
costs of living, though restaurant own-
ers say it will lead to higher prices and
fewer jobs.
Seattle, San Francisco and Los An-geles have approved phased-in $15
minimum wages. New York would be
the first state to take such a step for a
specific industry.
Wage hike for fast-food workers
By Tyler Lee
If you’re living in New York and privacy
is a huge concern for you, you might have
to prepare yourself because according to a
recent court ruling, it has been ruled thatFacebook must comply with authorities and
hand over user data on 381 users, following
the investigation into Social Security fraud.
The ruling does not allow Facebook to
challenge those requests. In fact it seems that
the only way to challenge those requests is
by the individuals themselves but only after
the information has been gathered. The re-
quest was initially made by the Manhattan
District Attorney’s office when they were in-
vestigating Social Security Fraud.
Facebook had initially resisted the re-
quest, claiming that it violated users’ Fourth
Amendment rights, which a state judge ba-
sically threw out. While companies such as
Microsoft and Google backed Facebook,
claiming it sets a troubling precedent, a
spokeswoman for the district attorney’s of-
fice believes it is necessary.
According to her, “In many cases, evi-
dence on their Facebook accounts directlycontradicted the lies the defendants told to
the Social Security Administration.” The in-
formation posted on Facebook included pho-
tos of public employees who were doing
sporting activities, despite claiming to be
disabled. In a time when tech companies are
coming forward and claiming that they will
protect user data, this move certainly does
not look good.

162 County
Employees
Take VoluntarySeparation
Westchester County Executive Robert P.Astorino on July 2, announced that tax-
payers will see $3 million in net savings nextyear, as a result of 162 county government em-ployees taking part in a voluntary incentive to
leave their jobs by July 31.Under the plan, departing employees re-
ceive $1,000 for every year of completed
county service."This is a win for everybody," said As-
torino. "Employees are rewarded for their
years of service and taxpayers benefit from thesavings generated from our ability to stream-
line the workforce. These savings will be ap-plied to reducing the $56 million deficit thecounty is facing in 2016."
The cost of the incentive is estimated tobe $800,000, while the net savings is projectedto be $2.97 million, an almost fourfold return
on investment. The departures will give de-partments the flexibility to align their staffsmore efficiently.
The 162 employees represent 3.3 percentof the county's budgeted workforce of 4,867.Worker compensation is the biggest expense
in the county budget. The average compensa-tion of current county workers is approxi-mately $130,000 a year; $80,000 for salary
and an additional $50,000 or 63 percent forbenefits.
The county budget office is currently pro-
jecting a $56 million deficit for 2016. Part of the reason is that sales tax collections areweaker than expected, down 3.7 percent in the
first quarter of 2015 compared to 2014.
Delia M. Farquharson
Makes Ballot For
Mount Vernon
In what can only be described as a tremen-dous effort, former Mount Vernon School
Board Trustee Delia M. Farquharson,
achieved the first significant milestone in herbid to become councilwoman in The City of Mount Vernon.
Running for the office of City Councilrequires candidates to collect 1,000 signa-
tures of registered voters to qualify for theballot. Ms Farquharson with a small team of ardent supporters, exceeded that requirement
and collected more than 2300 signatures.A mental health professional and a grad-
uate of Columbia University, Farquharson
was born in St. Mary, Jamaica, and could po-tentially make history as the first Caribbeanborn candidate to be elected to the City Coun-
cil in Mount Vernon.
The primary elections are scheduled
for Thursday, September 10, 2015.

World oil prices down again
Havana, Cuba:
One bitter holdover of the Cold War
slipped into the history books at 12:01
a.m. Monday, when the United States and
Cuba re-established diplomatic relations. For
the first time since severing ties in 1961, theyreopened embassies in each other's capitals.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Ro-
driguez Parrilla traveled to the Cuban Em-
bassy in Washington to raise his country's
flag, an event that Cuban government offi-
cials said would be broadcast live on the is-
land's state-run TV.
A Cuban delegation of diplomats, artists
and veterans of the revolution commemo-
rated the breakthrough with about 500 guests
and more than likely down a few celebratory
mojitos and shots of Havana Club rum.U.S. diplomats in Havana have readied
everything from new business cards to the
embassy sign. But the festivities and flag-
raising will have to wait for Secretary of
State John Kerry's visit -- the highest-level
trip by a U.S. official to Cuba since the 1959
revolution -- for the embassy reopening cer-emony in August.
Starting Monday, U.S. officials said, the
Cuban government will pull back some of
the tight cordon of security that had sur-
rounded America's diplomatic mission in Ha-vana and no longer record the names of
Cubans entering the building.
The Cuban and American heads of their
respective Interest Sections will became
charges d'affaires until ambassadors are
named.
Plenty of longtime enmity to overcome.
A new stage will begin, long and complex,
on the road toward normalization," Cuban
President Raul Castro said in a televised ad-
dress last week to the Cuban people. "Which
will require the will to find solutions to theproblems that have accumulated over more
than five decades and hurt ties between our
nations and peoples."
If there were ever two countries in need
of a "new stage" of relations, they are Cuba
and the United States.
U.S., Cuba re-establish diplomatic
relations, reopen embassies
World oil prices fell further on
Monday, on a stronger dollar
and concerns that a supply glut will
worsen, following a landmark dealwhich will allow Iran to increase its
crude exports.US benchmark West Texas Intermedi-
ate for delivery in August shed 17 cents to
reach $50.72 a barrel, compared with Fri-
day’s close.Lingering concerns about a return of
Iranian oil to the international market keptup the pressure on prices. Iran currently
exports around a million barrels of crude
per day, less than half the 2.3 million itsold overseas before sanctions were im-
posed in mid-2012.
Kingston, Jamaica:
The Ministry of Health has warned
Jamaicans to take necessary pre-
cautions in light of the mosquito-borne
Zika virus outbreak in Brazil, thatcould spread to the island. The warning comes after meetings at
the World Health Assembly now taking
place in Geneva, Switzerland, and subse-
quent to a warning issued by the Pan
American Health Organization, the min-
istry said in a release Tuesday.Permanent Secretary Dr Kevin Har-
vey is urging persons to take the necessary
precautions to rid their surroundings of
places mosquitoes could breed.
Dr Harvey is currently attending theWHA along with Minister of Health, Dr
Fenton Ferguson, Acting Director, Emer-
gency, Disaster Management and Special
Services, Dr Melody Ennis, and Senior
Medical Officer at the May Pen Hospital,
Dr Bradley Edwards.“The Aedes aegypti mosquito, which
spreads the Zika virus is generally found
in and around places where people inhabit.
Persons are urged to search for and destroymosquito breeding sites by getting rid of
old tyres and containers in which water cansettle, punching holes in tins before dispos-
ing, and covering large drums, barrels and
tanks holding water, “ he explained.
The Zika virus is from the same fam-
ily as and is similar to dengue with symp-toms which include fever, joint and muscle
pain, conjunctivitis, headache, weakness,
rash, and swelling of the lower limbs. After
the bite of an infected mosquito, symptoms
usually appear following the incubationperiod of three to 12 days. The symptoms
last for four to seven days. No deaths due
to the Zika virus have been recorded
worldwide to date.

The National Trial Lawyers A Los Angeles, California judge
has found that Sears Holdings Corp (Sears) can be held li-
able for negligence in an action brought against them by more
than 25 female plaintiffs who had been spied on and recorded
in a store dressing room and bathroom.
Sears Maintenance worker, Alejandro Gamiz, used
peepholes and cameras to spy on female customers and em-
ployees in the fitting rooms and restrooms of a North Holly-
wood, California Sears store. More than 1,000 women viewed.
Gamiz had been employed at the store from 2009 to 2012
and viewed and recorded more than 1,000 women and girls
over the span of his employment. Gamiz installed motion acti-vated cameras and peepholes the size of pencil tips, that
“blended in really well” making them difficult to detect.
Gamiz confessed to masturbating while peeping into the
women’s restroom and downloading recordings, some to the
Internet, from the hidden video cameras.
Sears fired Gamiz and he was arrested after it discovered
the hidden video equipment. Gamiz was sentenced to one year
in jail and three years of probation. Cause of action for negli-
gence
The plaintiffs, represented by a NTL’s Top 100 Trial
Lawyer Michael Alder of Alder Law, P.C., claim that Sears was
negligent in its hiring, supervising and retaining of Gamiz. A
former employee of Sears, plaintiff Krystel D., is also claiming
that Sears retaliated against her for speaking with the media
about the Peeping Tom, for filing a complaint and assisting inlegal proceedings arising out of Gamiz’s and Sears’ conduct,
according to the complaint.

The Mexico that its fans had hoped to see,
and that the rest of CONCACAF fears,
finally emerged in the Gold Cup final.Whether El Tri deserved its place at Lin-
coln Financial Field is up for debate, but
there was no question that Mexico was a de-
serving winner on Sunday. It weathered an
early surge from upstart Jamaica then took
control, easing to a 3–1 triumph and a record
seventh Gold Cup title. As a result, Mexico
will meet the U.S., the 2013 champion, in a
one-game playoff on Oct. 9 to determine
CONCACAF’s representative in the 2017
Confederations Cup.
While Mexico prevented Jamaica from
becoming the first nation from outside North
America to claim a Gold Cup championship,
it joined Uruguay and Argentina in the ex-
clusive group of countries that have won at
least 10 continental crowns. Mexico wasCONCACAF champion three times in the
pre-Gold Cup era (before 1991).

No disciplinary action against GayleThe West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has discontinued a disciplinary charge brought against
West Indies opener Chris Gayle. On January 11 this year, Gayle made public comments during
a post-match interview that were critical of the selection policy of the WICB, when Kieron Pollard
and Dwayne Bravo were not selected for the West Indies team that took part in the ICC Cricket
World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2015. A charge was later laid against Gayle that he hadconducted himself in a manner contrary to Rule 9 of the WICB’s Code of Conduct. Rule 9 states
that “players and team officials shall not make public or media comment which is detrimental to
the interests of the game”.

"They both believe they can win gold.
That makes it exciting," he said. Campbell, a
former world 100m bronze medallist, added:
"Now Bolt's in shape, he has 100% belief.
Gatlin definitely believes he can win and
that's what potentially will bring out a crazy
time in Beijng.
"Rivalries are important because it
makes people dig deeper." Injury and poor
form meant Bolt had run just once over 100m
in 2015 prior to Friday, a lacklustre 10.12 in
Brazil in April.
But in wet conditions he twice dipped
below 10 seconds for the first time this year,
on the track where he won three of his six
Olympic titles.
The 28-year-old secured victory in his
heat with ease and while beating his rivals in
the final was more of a challenge, he equalledhis impressive qualifying time - the joint
sixth fastest time of the year.
According to BBC Radio 5 live pundit
Campbell, the two races this weekend con-
firmed Bolt - who withdrew from two Dia-
mond League meetings this month with a
pelvic problem - looked in "good shape".
"It's important people understand that the in-
jury he had would be similar to having a car
with one flat tyre," explained Campbell.
Usain Bolt v Justin Gatlin could
produce 'crazy' time - Campbell

New York, NY:
Malachi Rivers is back with a new con-
ceptual album, and most importantlyhis most artistic work to date. The Other I is
a project that has been a labor of love over
the past year. It was around this time last
year that Malachi released the summer an-
them "Make It Sexy," which received praise
in the online digital hemisphere.
As the saying goes "if it isn't broke,
don't fix it," and Malachi follows this mantra
by teaming back up with his longtime pro-
ducer Brandon D'lux. D'lux effortlessly
manages to create a musical body of work
that introduces you to a different part of
Malachi's personality on each song. "It was
my original concept for the EP to draw the
listeners into various sides of who I am" says
Malachi.
The Other I boasts an impressive list of
collaborations including an emotional and
soulful collaboration with Lorenzo Owens
(Oprah’s Pop Star) on the song “What We
Had”. "I had a great time working with so
many talented singers/songwriters on this
project, and I am grateful for their participa-tion on my most vulnerable work of art
today" says Malachi.
The Other I is just one piece of
Malachi’s fast-growing artistic empire,
which also includes several music place-
ments on the popular web-series Love Han-
dles (750k+ views), collaborations with
Latin Grammy nominated artist Tamela
Hedstrom, and new movie and web-series
roles. Malachi Rivers is truly an artist to
watch in 2015.

On Sunday, July 26th at 6pm Jamaican
born actor, Stogie Kenyatta will take
the stage at the Church of St. Luke and St.
Matthew, 520 Clinton Avenue, Brooklyn,
New York, presenting his masterpiece one
man show, "The World Is My Home, The
Life of Paul Robeson."
Hailed as the number one touring
Broadway style "solo" show on the U.S. and
Caribbean College Circuit, Stogie Keny-
atta's highly acclaimed 90 minute perform-
ance has become a template for the use of
theater for social change. Having performed
on more than 250 college campuses, and
having amassed more than 30 T.V. credits
from Sit Coms, Film, Soaps, and comedy, for Stogie Kenyatta, this role has been his
most challenging.
The classically trained alumnus of the
Afro Am Studio in Harlem and Henry Street
Settlement has written a brilliant script that
harnesses Kenyatta's skills as a screenwriter
and a student of political science which he
studied in Long Beach, California. Kenyatta
came to America at age 9 from the island of
Jamaica and grew up in Brooklyn before
moving out to Los Angeles.
The script chronicles the triumph and
tragedy of Robeson, the "mistreated Ameri-
can genius" who fought globally for social
justice for Black, Jewish, Welsh and Spanish
workers and whose life story and legacy has
been lost in the archives.Robeson, a "renaissance man" who ex-
tolled the notion that "If we accept the Fa-
therhood of GOD then we must accept the
Brotherhood of man," was valedictorian of
his class at Rutgers University in 1919, re-
ceived a Law Degree from Columbia Uni-
versity and was an All American football
player who played in the early days of the
NFL but ultimately became "blackballed and
had his passport revoked," a price he paid
for leading from the front in his outcry
against racism and bigotry in the U.S.
It's a powerful and poignant story, shed-
ding light on the horror of the Slave Trade,
the shame of the Holocaust and the artistic
wonders of the Harlem Renaissance, the
Jazz-Behop era as well as McCarthysim,
Blacklists and down right Racism. It's a his-
tory that needs to be known in order to put
much of the current issues in context. "The
World Is My Home, The Life of Paul Robe-
son" contextualizes the African American
experience in the United States of America
for "those who arrived in shackles and onbloody feet." During his life, Robeson
"stood tall and took the blows for those of
us too handicapped by ignorance or subdued
by tyranny," says Kenyatta. "He survived the
nightmare, so that others could live the
dream," he asserts.
The event is produced and presented by
Hip Hop pioneer, Rodney “Radio Rahim”
Deas, co-founder of the Paul Robeson Free-
dom School, a Summer Day Camp program
that serves youths from age 10 to 15. Pro-
ceeds will benefit the Paul Robeson Free-
dom School with a portion of the proceeds
from tickets purchased from the Coalition to
Preserve Reggae Music (CPR) benefiting
CPRLive, the broadcast platform of CPR
which is celebrating ten years of raising thebar in the way the music is "created, devel-
oped, promoted and presented." "We are
happy to be once again working with Paul
Robeson Freedom School," said Carlyle
McKetty, President of CPR.
"This is a timely production and we in-
vite everyone to come out and learn about a
great American, Paul Robeson." General
tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the
door with VIP seating available at $40. "The
World Is My Home, The Life of Paul Robe-
son" is a timely staging.
In light of the shooting deaths of 9 wor-
shippers in the Emmanuel AME Church in
South Carolina, and the subsequent lowering
of the racist Confederate Flag , the story of
Paul Robeson is a poignant reminder of thehistory of black struggle in America. "Paul
Robeson was a symbol of our developing
manhood; armed with nothing more than the
strength of his convictions and his vision of
a world where men live as brothers.

It was a miracle!By Pastor Thency Dennis
It was October 15, 2014, I arrived at work
in Riverdale just opposite Manhattan
College. I got out of the car and stood up
tall putting on my sweater. I noticed that the
keys were left in the ignition.
I reached back into the car to get the
keys, the car started moving down the hill.
Crippled with fear, a sense of horror surged
through my heart! I started running besidethe car with the drivers door open, I didn't
remember falling. I woke up buried under-
neath the car looking up into the duster bot-
tom of the car.
People screaming get help, call secu-
rity, call 911. Some were saying, knock on
the doors, bang on the doors, someone is
underneath the car. I tried moving my body
only to find that four fingers from my right
hand were pinned underneath the back
wheel.
The car crashed into a light pole, the
front was totaled. It took one hour and thir-
teen minutes, to get me from underneath the
car.
The car was elevated by metal blocks,
to get me out on a flat stretcher. I had no
broken bones, and not a scratch was on mybody. Faculties in tact....My God Yahweh is
a miracle worker. He saved me!

There is often a collective amnesia in the
North that suggests slavery was strictly a
Southern evil, that the buying and selling of
human bodies took place solely in states lo-
cated on the wrong side of the Mason-Dixon.
New York City, beacon of liberalism and
diversity that it is today, could not have been
home to such cruel and brutal injustices. But
the ugly, hard-to-swallow truth is that New
York — once the Dutch settlement of NewAmsterdam — was the capital of American
slavery for more than 200 years.
So deep were the city’s ties to slavery and
the South that Mayor Fernando Wood even
suggested seceding from the Union at the start
of the Civil War.
For the last several years, however, artist
Nona Faustine has worked to shine a light on
New York City’s buried legacy of slavery in a
striking series of self-portraits titled “White
Shoes.” The photographs feature Faustine pos-
ing before famous New York landmarks and
locales: City Hall, the State Supreme Court
Building, Wall Street — forgotten market-
places where African men, women, and chil-
dren were once bought, sold, and rented into
slavery.
Save for the pair of high heels beneath herfeet and a piece of broken black chain around
her wrist, Faustine is completely nude in the
images, a showing of solidarity with the
women who stood in her place centuries be-
fore.
“The nudity was symbolic of the way
black people were put on display and sold,"
Faustine tells the Voice. "Black women were
put on display on the slave blocks, and I felt a
strong [sense of] solidarity with those
women.” Taken in broad daylight, the photos
had to be snapped quickly, before drawing too
much attention. “Anybody can go to these
places fully clothed. But to risk something for
your beliefs, your art, to strip yourself of any
clothing or protection, it’s a state of vulnera-
bility.”
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Faustine at-
tended the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan
before earning an M.F.A. from the Interna-
tional Center for Photography at Bard College.
“White Shoes” began as a thesis project duringher second year of graduate school in 2012, but
Faustine has continued to add new images to
the collection as she discovers more former
slave sites throughout the area.
In addition to the nudity, the images fea-
tured in the photographs are steeped in sym-
bolism. The titular shoes represent America’s
white patriarchy, and the cardboard cutouts of
Faustine — which she bored holes into and
placed in Brooklyn’s pre-Revolutionary ceme-
teries before photographing — symbolize the
anonymity of countless enslaved women. The
project acts as a bridge between the past and
the present, a way of remembering the contri-
butions African Americans have made to this
country over the centuries amid today’s wave
of racial turmoil.
“Our history has been suppressed. Ourcontributions to this country have been sup-
pressed,” Faustine explains, adding that she
hopes to highlight the contributions people of
color have made to the annals of photography
as well. “All of the atrocities [are] continuing:
black males being killed in the street, high in-
carceration rates, gentrification — we’re just
being uprooted out of neighborhood after
neighborhood. And I think people are trying to
say, ‘Wait a minute. We have a history here.
We have an incredible history here.

BEAUTY CARE
Laser hair removal is our topic of the mo-
ment and Groupon and most of the major
deal companies are offering great deals for laser
hair removal treatments to men and women. Let
us find out what it is all about and what is laser
hair removal? Part 2: Electrolysis.
I had an opportunity to spend time with
Jennifer Richardson a licensed Esthetician and
Laser Tech. Jennifer has been in the industry for
more than 15 years. Jennifer is the owner of
Vanish Laser in midtown Manhattan. In the in-
terview Jennifer gave me key points which my
readers will find quite informative.
First let us define what is Laser Treat-
ment? Laser hair removal treatments are an
FDA approved method for permanent hair re-duction, but not permanent hair removal. The
client must have multiple treatments for best re-
sults.
The process involves using a hand-held
laser device which the tech applies to the
client’s skin. The pulse light on the client’s skin
seek out dark pigment (color) of hair, and im-
pairs the hair follicle. Meaning light and dark.
Note the hair begins to fall out within many
days after treatment, on average within (10 –
14). Note hair does grow back this is not per-
manent hair removal.
Laser treatment per Jennifer” "skin type
determines the appropriate laser settings." As
you may not be aware there is laser setting for
white skin and laser setting for black skin. I had
to get clarity as to why there are different types
of setting and this is due to the amount of
melanin in the skin. The higher the melanin the
higher the propensity for burns and thereforethe treatment must be tailored according to the
client, skin type and skin hue.
Subsequently, as it is now summer the
challenge of skincare for the client is protec-
tion. So in line with hair removal and after care
for the client; "making sure the client under-
stands the procedure is key. It is extremely im-
portant to inform the client prior to the session
about guidelines and expectations of the service
and you must also obtain their signed consent."
As we continued the interview I asked
Jennifer about her client base and most inter-
estingly she revealed "About 50% of my clien-
tele are men. They lean towards full back or full
body treatment, whereas women are more area
specific."
Laser treatment and burns, during the in-
terview I mentioned to Jennifer I had a call
from a woman who was burned during laser
treatment and had to go to the emergency room
for treatment. Jennifer expressed the side ef-
fects of laser, "Unfortunately, in spite of pro-
viding post care documentation and protocol,
some individuals are rather lax in their at-home
care or don't fully understand what the area can
look like after treatment until they see the
treated area days after.
However, burns can happen if the settings
are incorrect or the client isn't forthcoming with
skin issues or flair ups and just want the treat-
ment. Those scenarios happen. That's why I
stress the importance of talking to your clientprior to each session and inspecting the area be-
fore beginning treatment."
Once a client receives instructions for
laser aftercare the most important thing to be
done is to follow the protocol that is given. On
average the laser session for full face treatment
is 15 minutes in duration on average.

You should know that in the
history of American politics, never has any candidate received
more free publicity than DonaldTrump. This has come about be-
cause of part of a statement that
he made where he criticized theMexican government authorities
for allowing criminals, drug deal-ers and rapists into the United
States.
For the record, here areTrump’s exact words from that
speech: “When Mexico sends itspeople, they’re not sending their
best. They’re sending people thathave lots of problems, and they’re
bringing those problems to us.
They’re bringing drugs.They’re bringing crime. They’re
rapists. And some, I assume, are
good people! But I speak to bor-der guards and they tell us what
we’re getting. And it only makescommon sense. They’re sending
us not the right people.”These words have caused an
avalanche of criticism, startingwith Univision, the Spanish-lan-
guage television station that used
to broadcast Trump’s Miss USAPageant. Univision literally can-
celled Donald Trump’s contractbecause of Donald Trump’s com-
ments about Mexico. This has
caused Trump to file a lawsuit for$500 million dollars against Uni-
vision for a breach of contract. Can you imagine what will hap-
pen if Donald Trump wins the
lawsuit?Macy’s chain of department
stores have also broken their busi-ness relationship with Donald
Trump and have discontinued theTrump Menswear collection of
clothing, also citing to his com-ments about Mexico.
This chain of attacks, with
the help of the media, its com-mentators and even comedians,
have made Donald Trump thetopic of the moment, calling him
all kinds of names and epithets,
making fun of his hair and hislife.
The free media publicity es-calated when Donald Trump crit-
icized US Senator John McCain. What many people may not real-
ize is that John McCain first in-sulted Trump and millions of Americans who follow Donald
Trump by stating: “... what he didwas he fired up the crazies” -
meaning that all of those millions
of Americans who are followingTrump are crazy. McCain got
away with his insult, but whenTrump responded to the insult by
saying that John McCain was nota hero, the media beat up Trump.
I want you to know that
Trump has not been the only pub-lic figure who has offended a
large community of people. In myhumble opinion, others have said
even worse and have not receivedthe punishment, criticism and
mockery that Donald Trump hasreceived.
Know, my dear reader, thatin 2007, former US Senator
Barack Obama, who representedthe State of Illinois decided to
throw his hat into the ring to run
for President against Hillary Rod-ham Clinton, who was then US
Senator for the State of New Yorkand is the wife of former Presi-
dent Bill Clinton.
At that time, there weremany prominent individuals who
tried hard to make a mockery of Barack Obama and the African
American community. The firstoffender was our current Vice
President Joseph Biden. At that
time, while Biden was serving asUS Senator for the State of
Delaware, he stated that then-Senator Barack Obama was the
“first mainstream African-Amer-
ican who is articulate and brightand clean and a nice-looking
guy.”Could you imagine, my dear
reader, that Barack Obama is thefirst African American who is ar-
ticulate, bright and clean and
nice-looking? Think about howwith those words and how Joseph
Biden effectively insulted, disre-spected and made a mockery out
of every other member of the en-tire African-American commu-
nity in the nation. He completely
ignored and disregarded the manyintellectual and distinguished
African Americans who con-tributed to this country’s great-
ness long before Barack Obama’s
arrival on the political scene.

What’s the Difference? By Senator Rev Rubén Díaz - 32nd Senatorial District

Constant memories make me feel guilty!
Please send your questions and comments to: [email protected]
Dear Divine Diva:
My husband, "Patrick," and I have
been happily married for more than
three years and have an infant son. Five
years before I began dating Patrick, I be-
came friends with a man I'll call Gareth.
After a few years, we grew very
close. Gareth and I acted more like a cou-ple than mere friends, escorting each other
to parties, carrying on hour-long late-
night phone chats before saying good-
night, finding excuses to be close and to
touch, and a mutual jealousy of any po-
tential other dates for either of us.
Eventually, I realized I had fallen in
love with him, but I didn't tell him for fear
of ruining my relationship with my best
friend. While I was never certain, I sus-
pected that Gareth felt the same way
about me.
Except for a few occasional kisses
and tender moments, however, our rela-
tionship remained strictly platonic. As the
years went on, I grew restless. It became
apparent that even if Gareth did have feel-ings for me, he would never act on them.
It was at this point that Patrick entered my
life.
He was wonderful to me, and I knew
it would be unfair to both of us to con-
tinue the friendship with Gareth, so I con-
sciously let our friendship slip away while
I fell in love with Patrick.
Today, my life with Patrick is happy
and fulfilling, and I know that he is the
love of my life. Despite this, I still miss
the close relationship I had with Gareth.
While I would never attempt to contact
Gareth, I feel as if I am emotionally cheat-
ing on Patrick because Gareth crosses my
mind several times a day, and I feel the
absence of what was my best friend.
These constant memories make me feel
guilty. How can I find emotional closure
from my past relationship?
-Needs Closure In New York
Dear Needs Closure:
It will take time and understanding on
your part that unfertilized romances such
as the one you had with Gareth can be
hard to shake.
Anyone who has had a relationship of
the duration and type you have described
has similar feelings -- and these feelings
can "pop up" when we least expect them.
(It's almost like the craving for a cigarette,
long after a per-son has quit smoking.)
My advice is to stop feeling guilty about
your feelings. Gareth was the center of
your life for a long time, and in a way he
became "imprinted" in your electrical cir-
cuitry.
This does not mean you are still in
love with him, or that you are betraying
your husband because Gareth pops into
your consciousness. Furthermore, the
harder you try to suppress it, the more hewill appear. So please, remind yourself
every time that Gareth "appears" why the
relationship ended.
He was not your Prince Charming.
He was your learning experience on the
way to finding happiness, preparing you
for the man you finally married.

Vegetables contain vitamins and
minerals that are important for you
to be healthy.
It is a good idea to eat vegetables indifferent colors, because they have dif-

You can have vegetables as a snack.
You can also eat them as part of your

Cooking vegetables can destroy the
vitamins in them. Try to eat them raw.
If you want to cook them, steam them

Questions & Comments:
The New York City Health Department ad-
vises New Yorkers to avoid certain
Ayurvedic medications made in India by Shree
Baidyanath as they have been found to contain
elevated levels of arsenic, lead, and mercury.
The levels of heavy metals found in these
medications manufactured exceed the limits
for arsenic (3 ppm), lead (2 ppm), and/or mer-
cury (1 ppm) for certain food additives as ref-
erenced by the Food and Nutrition Board,
Institute of Medicine of the National Acade-
mies.
Heavy Metals in Medications
In many of these products, the heavy
metal content greatly exceeded the acceptable
limits. Products had levels as high as 27,000ppm of mercury, 470 ppm of lead and 240
ppm of arsenic. People who regularly use
products containing high levels of heavy met-
als are at an increased risk for harmful health
effects, including damage to the brain, kid-
neys, nervous and reproductive systems. The
Health Department issued Commissioner’s
Orders to cease sales at neighborhood stores
where the products were found.
“Although not all Ayurvedic medications
contain dangerous ingredients, lead and other
heavy metals may be intentionally added to
some of these medications for perceived ther-
apeutic benefits. Ayurvedic medications are
generally not tested for safety,” said Bureau of
Environmental Disease and Injury Prevention
Assistant Commissioner Nancy Clark. “These
products are not safe for human consumption.
No one should sell these products and no one
should use them. I urge New Yorkers to call
311 to report stores selling these products.”
Recommendations
New Yorkers should immediately stop
using these products. Those using these prod-
ucts should consult with their doctor and con-sider receiving tests for exposure to lead or
other heavy metals.
Call 311 to report locations where these
products are being sold.
For a list of products, please view the
Health Alert. For additional information,
please visit New York City Health Depart-
ment.

By Neil Patel, Online Marketing Expert
1. Fake it. You’ll make it.
The popular expression, “Fake it till you make
it” works. Why? Because it’s built on real sci-ence. Psychologists have long recognized the
correlation between the mind and the body.
When we feel a certain way, we act in corre-
sponding ways. The reverse is true. When we
act in a certain way, we feel a corresponding
emotion. The most common example is the
smile. Smiling isn’t just a response to a happy
feeling.
2. Act confident. No matter what.
One of your greatest assets is your confidence.
The problem is, it’s hard to project confidence
from a mind filled with fear and doubt. Many
entrepreneurs and soon-to-be-successful people
suffer from a condition known as the imposter
syndrome -- a feeling of inferiority and personal
misgivings about one’s status or achievement.
3. Ask people for help.Smart people know how not smart they are.
That’s why the smartest people are often the
ones asking for help. The only reason why I
know a thing or two about online marketing is
not because I’m smart. It’s because I asked for
help.
4. Be selective about who you spend time
with.
Entrepreneurs know the value of time. They un-
derstand that “spending time” is the equivalentof spending money, except that money is a re-
newable resource, while time is not. For this
reason, you should be spending time with peo-
ple who make you better. You shouldn’t be
spending your leisure time in places where
you’re the smartest guy in the room. You should
be spending your time in places where you’re
challenged, sharpened, and cultivated. Success-
ful people spend their time around other suc-
cessful people.
5. Dress the part.
Like it or not, people judge you based on how
you’re dressed. I used to dress like a bum.
When I made a few strategic and low-budget
changes to my wardrobe, everything changed.
My consulting rate more than doubled, I gained
valuable new clients, and my business ex-
ploded. Was it all due to my wardrobe? Therewas obviously luck involved, but the wardrobe
did make an impact.
6. Take risks.
Good entrepreneurs take risks well. The secret
to being a great risk taker is simply to start tak-
ing risks. Sounds simple, but it’s true. Start with
smaller risks that don’t have a large downside.
Eventually you learn how to calculate how risky
a decision may be and from there you canslowly increase the amount of risk you take on.
Take risks with confidence.
7. Write your own online b iography.
If someone wants to know more about you,
what are they going to do? They’re going to
Google your name. They’re not stalking. They
just want to know who you are, what you do
and what you’re all about. You get to shape
what they see online and the impact it makes.
By intentionally creating and curating your on-
line presence, you can develop an identity that
matches who you want to be. Your profiles on
all the major social media sites should be cohe-
sive and compelling.
Conclusion
Everyone who is successful has faced a time in
their when they weren’t so successful. Successis preceded by growth and development. Now
is your time to prepare, to work hard and to give
it all you’ve got. To become what you’re des-
tined to be, you’ve got to act in corresponding
ways. How do you project success as an entre-
preneur?

Ladies by
the Wellby Sophia Greene
About the Book:
Ladies By The Well is an insight into the
life of a black Jamaican girl who struggles
with herself and the legacy of her parents,
torn among three different teachings by her
overly strict grandmother, her disciplinar-
ian father, and her outgoing, free-spirited
mother.
She searches for love in all the
wrong places and, in the process, discovers
the reality of the so-called American
Dream. If you are an immigrant, a welfare
recipient, and inmate in the prison system
running from relationship to relationship,
or you just feel tormented, this book may
be able to give you an appreciation for
Sophia’s struggles as she learns to adjust in
America and tries to survive. She later re-
alizes the American Dream is inside her.
Ladies By The Well is for all femaleswho are thirsty for love, marriage, chil-
dren, peace, and financial security.
About the Author:
Sophia Lorraine Greene currently works
for the New York City Transit Authority
and is also certified as a foster mother who
works with children in the system who are
waiting to be reconciled with their parents.
She is a motivational speaker who occa-
sionally speaks at gifted schools to students
in need of guidance. She resides in Brook-
lyn and is a single mother of two wonder-
ful children.
