The Strand Legacy

Dear Readers,

I hear kudos every month for the Editorial, that you eagerly wait for this letter, But the reason is simply this…

That every time you ever bought a book and read new thoughts, new visions, emotions, perspectives unfolded, And as growth subtly happened in your innermost places, it’s just grown and it’s grown and it’s grown. And as it grew you found new ways of living, new world views both inside and out, And before you knew it everyone was affected, all the readers, society and more, And this whole new movement just caught you by stealth, you awoke just today realizing, That whatever all of you were, hoped and aspired to long ago may or may not have happened, But all the while these fresh new perspectives have taken you just where you needed to go. These dizzy heights cannot be explained only felt, lived and experienced and there are no heights in any way better, As you changed, society changed, and it is obvious only you could have made it all happen,And with every statement, insight and concept these heights have been stretched and bettered simply thru the reading of books !

I apologize for the bad rhyming my friends but there’s poetry in what I’m saying to you, For this is more than a movement, it’s a countrywide sweep…the amazing Strand Legacy and You !

As for the Editorial it’s but a shining vehicle, it’s 400 words, just a letter, But it conveys all that it shares with all readers everywhere, Strand Book Stall, three generations, and You !

Season’s Greetings from all at Strand,Vidya Virkar

BOMBAY TO MUMBAIChanging PerspectivesBy Pauline Rohatgi, Pheroza Godrej & Rahul Mehrotra

Within three centuries, seven west-coast islands evolved into the Bombay peninsula, then into a flourishing centre for trade, ultimately becoming the cosmopolitan, high-rise metropolis of Mumbai. Marg celebrates fifty years of publishing with this volume on the city of its birth.

In three parts – “Perceptions and Observations”, “Places, Symbols, and Icons”, and “Making an Urban Landscape”, eighteen articles highlight Bombay’s changing topography over some three hundred years. They portray a historic spectrum of this enigmatic and intriguing city while discussing opportunities for the future.

A separate folded, user-friendly map helps readers locate places mentioned in the book, with a map of the whole Mumbai Metropolitan Region, a detailed plan of the Fort Heritage Precinct, and the suburban rail network also provided. The essays in the second part provide a sense of Bombay’s character through some of its symbols and icons. Embellished with more contemporary photographs and a sketch of Back Bay by M. F. Husain, the last part examines the impact of land restrictions on Mumbai’s physical appearance.

50+ VACATION HOMESEdited by Andrea Boekel

This book celebrates the holiday home, traditionally a place of rest, relaxation and escape from the pressures of the ‘real’ world. Its many incarnations include beach shacks, mountain-top chalets, country estates, ranches

and hobby farms, lakeside villas and isolated cabins. The unique styles reflect their owners’ very personal approaches to what it means to be ‘on vacation’. The architecture of holiday homes reveals the shift in lifestyle that defines a vacation; architects are required to work closely with their clients to achieve just the right spirit. The results of this collaboration can be breathtaking.

ONLY TIME WILL TELL (Large Print Edition)By Jeffrey Archer The Clifton Chronicles is Jeffrey Archer’s most ambitious work in four decades as an international bestselling author. The epic tale of Harry Clifton’s life begins in 1920, with the chilling words, ‘I was told that my father was killed in the war’. But it will be another twenty years before Harry discovers how his father really died, which will only lead

him to question: who was his father? Is he the son of Arthur Clifton, a stevedore who worked in Bristol docks, or the first born son of a scion of West Country society, whose family owns a shipping line? Only Time will Tell covers the years from 1920 to 1940, and includes a cast of memorable characters that The Times has compared to The Forsyte Saga. PAKISTAN: A HARD COUNTRYBy Anatol Lievn

In the past decade Pakistan has become a country of immense importance to its region, the United States, and the world. With almost 200 million people, a 500,000-man army, nuclear weapons, and a large diaspora in Britain and North America, Pakistan is central to the hopes of jihadis and the fears of their enemies. Yet the greatest short-term threat to Pakistan is not Islamist insurgency as such, but the actions of

the United States, and the greatest long-term threat is ecological change. Anatol Lieven’s book is a magisterial investigation of this highly complex and often poorly understood country.

YIDDISH CIVILISATIONThe Rise and Fall of a Forgotten NationBy Paul Kriwaczek

Until Hitler’s mass murderers extinguished its existence, Yiddish society had survived in its central and east European heartland since medieval times. At its height it was culturally vibrant, economically successful, intellectually adventurous and largely self-ruling. It has now gone for ever, but it left an indelible mark on history and its influence lives on in American language, humour and culture.
