We all know exercise is good for us. It helps control blood

pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and body weight. Exercisemakes our heart stronger and more efcient. Exercise helps

maintain and increase strength and bone density. As a result,we faithfully take our daily walk, spend time on the treadmill,

and/or lift weights. However, we may not be providing our-selves with the MAXIMAL benets for all our efforts.

Our bodies are stimulus-response mechanisms. Whats more, the body is basi-

cally lazy. The heart, the muscles and all the other body parts will respond (getstronger and more t) to the stimulus of exercise. And, the response (tness) isexactly the amount needed-no more, no less.

The response of consistent, daily stimulus by exercise goes

only so far when we do the same exercise, for the sameamount of time, at the same effort level, in perpetuity. The

body will get only so much benet and respond only so muchto the same constant stimulus. Changing exercise habits canlead to additional tness gains and benets.

The same exercise over and over can also lead

to boredom and/or repetitive stress injuries.

Boredom is one of the most-reported barriers toexercise. It only makes sense for us to get boredwhen we do the same exercise day after day.Doing different exercise, or changing the routine,

substantially increases the likelihood of stickingwith a consistent exercise program. Repetitive

movements done frequently and without ad-equate recovery can lead to overuse injuries such as tendonitis, pulled muscles,

and bursitis. These types of problems can substantially limit, or totally prevent, exercise performance. Exercise variety prevents one particular part of the bodyfrom repeatedly undergoing the same movement or the same stress.

So, instead of that ve days per week at the same speed for the same amount

of time on the treadmill, try ten or fteen minutes on the stationary bike or theelliptical trainer. Or, try increasing/varying the speed or incline on the treadmill.

Turn up the resistance on the bike or elliptical trainer.Instead of the same weight machine exercises for the

shoulder or back muscles, try using some of the freeweight equipment, or challenge yourself with body weightexercises. Consistently

changing the exercise routine keeps the body continuallychallenged and prevents boredom and injury.
