Pastor’s Article:
The book of Exodus tells the story of God delivering the people of Israel from slavery,
guiding them through the wilderness, and leading them to the promised land. We’ve been studying the book of Exodus in our Thursday morning Bible study group here at
Emanuel’s, and we often seem to draw parallels between the journey of Israel and the journey of Emanuel’s during this transition process. Here are a couple of the
parallels that I recall:
It is ultimately, a faith journey. The people of Israel had to learn to trust God through the Red Sea and into the wilderness. Here at Emanuel’s we are in a process
of discovery and faith. What does God have in store for us? How can we best listen
to God’s voice?
It is tempting to look to the past and think longingly of the “good ‘ol days.” Even the people of Israel, when they encountered hardship in the wilderness, looked back to
their days in Egypt as the “good ‘ol days” when they had plenty to eat and drink. God called them, and calls us, to look forward in faith and hope to their new future.
The journey surely seemed to take longer than it should have. A caravan of
merchants with camels could make the journey between Egypt and Canaan-land in less than a week. However, God led Israel south to Sinai and around through the
wilderness in a long journey where they learned many lessons that strengthened them for the future. Our hope is that our time of transition will strengthen us for the
future God has in mind for us.
The people of Israel were sustained by God’s constant presence. The people of Israel
had the pillar of cloud and fire as a sign of God’s guiding presence and later God gave them the Ark of the Covenant as a sign of the indwelling holy presence. We
have the Word and the Sacraments and we trust in the Holy Spirit whose presence fills us and guides us. We do not walk this journey by ourselves or trust in our
wisdom alone, but we seek God’s guidance with each and every step.
Sincerely and in Christ,
Pastor Paul Cannon

Emanuel’s Lutheran Grief and Loss Support Ministry
Grief is the normal reaction to the loss of a loved one or to a major change in one’s lifestyle. Grief is natural and necessary as we continue to learn to adapt with the changes in our life; it is a process of adjustment, reconciliation, and healing. There is no one way to grieve or a particular time frame in which we accomplish this task. But we can benefit when we come together to share our experiences.
Emanuel’s Lutheran Grief and Loss Support Ministry is available to anyone who has lost a loved one to death or who has gone through a major change in their lifestyle. We want to provide emotional and/or spiritual support for anyone who needs our help.
Please contact Donna Simmons, the Grief and Loss Support Coordinator at 830-379-5046 for more information.

Day School News
August, 2016
School begins on Monday, August 22, this year which coincides with the Seguin ISD calendar. The Day School
staff invite all of you at Emanuel’s to attend our OPEN HOUSE/PARENT NIGHT on Tuesday, August 23 at
6pm. A catered sandwich meal will be served and you will have the opportunity to meet the teachers and see
our exciting, engaging classrooms. The teachers in the Toddler, Pre-K3 and Pre-K4 classrooms will be
returning, as well as our Literacy Skills Program Coordinator, Ms. Jeannie Smith. The Music Ladies return as
well as Chapel services twice each week. We are looking forward to a great school year.
The Day School has entered into a partnership with Texas Lutheran University’s Volunteer Assistance Program
for the 2016-2017 school year. This program is sponsored through the TLU work opportunity programs
funded by the Office of Financial Aid. A TLU student will be working with us part time in the afternoons with
the majority of the wage being funded by the Office of Financial Aid at TLU. We are grateful to TLU for
including Emanuel’s Day School in their efforts to assist students financially with their college education.
All of our children will be singing at an Emanuel’s service in October and a Bake Sale will follow. Two years
ago we raised an incredible $1500 through a bidding war on our baked goods and we hope to top that this year!
If anyone would like to contribute a pie or cake to the sale, we would be grateful for your contribution.
Our sights are set on Seguin’s Christmas Parade and Sip ‘n Stroll this year, hoping to combine our efforts on a
float with Emanuel’s Neighborhood of Faith young family program and anyone else who wants to join us in this
new adventure. This will be a coordinating effort requiring a number of volunteers…you will hear more on this
project later. We need the working bees as well as the creative creatures – that’s you!
On Saturday, April 29, we will participate in the Seguin Earth Day Celebration at Central Park. Again, we hope
to combine efforts with the Emanuel’s congregation, the Garden of Eatin’ volunteers and have an exhibitor
presence for Emanuel’s Lutheran Church and Day School. Through our Garden partnership with Wesley
Harper United Methodist Church, we hope to be able to showcase our educational community garden and Pre-
K4 teacher Ms. Lanette Janz’s recycling enthusiasm for Earth Day.
Please come join us this year in these efforts to become more involved in our community and reach out to
others with our God-given talents and desire to work with our neighbors here in Seguin. We look forward to
having an exciting and productive year and achieving an even stronger relationship not only with our wonderful,
supportive congregation, but with our community as well.
May the Peace of the Lord be with you all.

COUNCIL PRESIDENT’S NOTES by Karen Weinstein Emanuel’s 2020…. The Survey has been completed, results have been tabulated and Core Values important to
ELC members have been identified. The Transition Team has worked diligently to create a Mission Statement
based on the following 5 Core Values: Proclaim the Gospel through Word and Sacrament; Be a Welcoming
Place with an emphasis on Diversity; Minister to people of all ages with an emphasis on intergenerational
interaction; Be a leader in faith-based education (Sunday School, Day School, Bible Study, VBS); and Service to
others. By the end of this month, the Team plans to have created both a Mission and a Vision Statements along
with Strategic Goals. ELC should then be well on the way to completing the Ministry Site Profile needed to begin
the Call Process for a new Pastor.
Be open to new ideas and change is a Core Value which did not make the top 5, but is still felt to be extremely
important to the members of ELC. With this in mind, the ELC Council Executive Committee has met with
representatives from Spirit of Joy (SoJ) to discuss the possibility of ELC sharing our campus with SoJ until they
complete their own place of worship. SoJ’s basic request is that ELC provide 2 office spaces and allow SoJ to
have Sunday morning worship in the ELC sanctuary at a time other than ELC’s chosen time of worship. The
ELC Executive Committee members openly encouraged the development of a relationship between ELC and SoJ
in the future even if the decision is made not to share space.
The Survey results pointed out that members would like something done with Luther House. To this end, a
meeting was held with Doug Parker and Nick Wilkins to re-visit a previous proposal to use Luther House as the
location for the Guadalupe Christian Counseling Center (GCCC). Previously, a renovation project was halted
when a grant to fund the project was not awarded. Based on the recent discussion, grant applications will again be
submitted. If the renovation is completed, GCCC could house their offices on the 2nd
floor and have evening
counseling sessions. During the day, other groups could use the downstairs to allow Luther House to be a multi-
purpose space. If a grant is not awarded, ELC has recently been remembered in multiple Estates. Funds should
be available to complete the renovation of a well-built structure which is rapidly falling into extreme disrepair.
Luther House can truly be a space used to serve our community.
In other Council news—Thank you to Jeannie Hall for volunteering to serve on the Endowment Administration
Committee along with Ron Naumann and Keith Vinyard. Council has agreed to have ELC participate in both the
Seguin Christmas Parade and next April’s Earth Day event as a shared ministry with Emanuel’s Day School.
Does anyone have access to a 20 ft trailer to serve as a float?? Benevolence funds continue to be dispersed with
$1600 going toward the missionaries, Adam and Raelene Fischer who will be serving in Kosovo in the coming
year. Adam is the grandson of Ervin and Betty Fischer. In October, a Polka Service and Sausage Supper has
been held for the past 20+ years with all offerings going toward the Christian Cupboard. The majority of the
Social Concerns committee which has been responsible for food preparation for the Sausage Supper no longer
plan to continue. If the 2 events are to continue, this is a perfect opportunity for new volunteers to step up—or is it
time to try something different? Area ELCA churches are joining together to honor First Responders through
God’s Work Our Hands on 9/11. Dennis Sagebiel has been meeting with the planning group. Involvement in
this effort may be in addition to repeating the projects which were carried out by ELC in 2015. A huge thank you
to the property stewards for the work done to keep the air conditioning systems going throughout ELC. Property
stewards will also help Tom Engler install replacement parts to re-engage the chimes which have been non-
functional for several months now.
And so goes ELC during this time of change. Hopefully, we at Emanuel’s are more open to change than the
Israelites proved to be in their trek out of slavery to the Promised Land. With open hearts and minds, we can
be the church that God is calling us to be.
Children & FAMILY MINISTRIES REPORT: June 2016
Summer rap-up Elementary camp
We had so much fun at camp for a week. Each child got to experience something different. So many of them faced fears and found something new that they like. We celebrated birthdays and first year campers. Also we made new friends from other congregations.
The funniest thing: Watching the kids throw water balloons at Ms. Alex.
Confirmation camp
The kids got to do high ropes and the zip line. Each of the kids at least tried to challenge course and found how much they can handle. This week was fun to watch them grow as a group.
The funniest thing: Having the kids scream on the way down from the zip line.
Vacation Bible School This week the kids had so much fun sharing their faith with community members. It was awesome to see the kids learning about the super heroes in the Bible and the ones that are right around us. We had a fire truck, ambulance, pastors and police come see us.
The funniest thing: When the fire truck turned on the sirens and the kids ran away.

MUSIC MINISTRY NEWS FOR AUGUST 2016
Like the troopers that they are, choir AKA the Summer Singers, is continuing to serve in their capacity as worship leaders throughout the summer even though they do not attend a midweek rehearsal. My pledge to them is always the same: If you will come and sing “cold turkey,” then I will guarantee that whatever I select for you to sing will be something that you can do with a minimum of rehearsal. In actuality, what happens is that they maintain not only their confidence level, but also their sight-reading skills during the months of June, July and August. As we approach the September through May season of service, it is time to resume the long-term schedule and to prepare for what remains of Year C and to become acquainted with the upcoming Year A. The Heavenly Ringers Bell Choir will rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 6.30 until 7.15. They normally play in the church services on the 4th Sunday of each month, although this varies with the Liturgical Calendar. The Jubilation Singers rehearse on Wednesday evenings as well at 7.30 until roughly 8.45. the Jubilation Singers sing on the 2nd and 3rd Sundays of each month, although deviations from this format occur as the Liturgical Calendar dictates. Instrumental Praise, our group of brass, woodwind and string players, usually plays on the 4th Sunday of each month (or as busy schedules allow). The children of the Sunday School will begin having music on Sunday mornings as part of their opening activities. They will begin a special Christmas number for use at their program in December. We always rejoice when a new brother or sister decides to try their hand at ringing, singing, or playing an instrument. Please consider yourself invited to join us as we serve God in this very special way. God’s blessing! Tom Engler

I’m here to say THANK YOU
to all of you that helped make

This year we eliminated the

Instead we offered “morning

hungry. Many of the children
