FROM THE PASTOR: “Next Steps in the Transition Process”

Based on my experience serving in a prior interim ministry situation, I thought it might be helpful to have a general idea of what you can expect over the next few months for the pastoral transition process. (Please take what I am writing here as generic guidance, as specifics could likely change, but at least here you can get an idea of what to expect.)

First, the Transition Planning Team, working with our consultant, has taken input from the congregational event in April and all of the surveys collected in June. The input you have given has provided material for the Team to craft mission and vision statements and core values. The Team will continue to work through September and, as needed, into October to produce goals and objectives.

Second, a Call Committee will be formed, probably in September. According to our Church Constitution, the Church Council will elect a seven-member Call Committee. The Call Committee will meet with the bishop’s representative and attend a synod-sponsored “Healthy Congregation” event.

Third, the Call Committee, using the work from the Transition Team, will put together what is called a “Ministry Site Profile (MSP).” The MSP is a congregational self-description that gives a prospective pastor information about Emanuel’s, such as size, composition of congregation, how we see our mission and what we are looking for in ministry and many other things. This MSP is approved by the bishop’s office and then is posted on the ELCA web site for viewing by pastors who are looking for a new call. One of the key advantages of having gone through the transition process with a consultant is that the consultant helps us craft the MSP which is perhaps the most critical step in moving forward.

Fourth, interested pastors will submit their profiles to the synod office. The synod bishop or assistant reviews the profiles, selects appropriate matches and sends several names to the Call Committee. During the call process the Call Committee will not be able to give out the names or specific location of the candidates in order to maintain confidentiality for the candidates and their home congregations. The Call Committee then conducts phone interviews (or nowadays will use Skype to conduct interviews over the internet). Usually the top two candidates are brought in for a personal interview. After deciding on the best candidate, the Call Committee recommends the candidate to Church Council. Council then has the chance to meet and interview the candidate. Once Church Council approves the candidate, the candidate is presented to the congregation for a vote.

Throughout this entire process, prayers of everyone in the congregation are solicited for the Transition Team, the Call Committee and the Church Council, asking for God’s blessing and guidance in this process.

Sincerely and in Christ,

Pastor Paul Cannon

VOLUME 15 NO. 9 SEPTEMBER 2016 P.2 ISSUE 11

A Word of Thanks from Pastor Cannon: I’d like to thank our supply pastors, our church staff and our retired

ministers in the congregation for filling in this summer while I limited myself to a part-time schedule in June, July

and August. Thanks especially to Tom Engler for his many hospital visits, home communion visits, and nursing

home visits and services conducted in my absence.

Clergy Training to be held at Emanuel’s. In order to help area clergy (Lutheran and others) provide ministry to

veterans and military members, the Veterans Administration Chaplain office will be conducting clergy training here

on September 28th from 9:30-2:30 p.m. During this training clergy will discover effective ways to provide pastoral

care to those who have experienced the stressors of military life and especially the rigors of combat. All area clergy

are invited.

VOLUME 15 NO. 9 SEPTEMBER 2016 P.3 P.2 ISSUE 11 COUNCIL PRESIDENT’S NOTES by Karen Weinstein

Emanuel’s 2020. . . . On March 29, 2016, the Transitional Planning Team met for the first time and was tasked with analyzing all information received and identifying Core Values (What is most important to ELC). Having identified the Core Values, a Mission Statement (What is ELC’s Purpose) was developed. The Team felt that a Vision Statement (What does ELC want to achieve?) was truly needed to explain the Mission Statement. What do you think?

MISSION STATEMENT (What is our purpose?)

To be the church God is calling us to be by declaring God’s love, serving others and embracing all.

VISION STATEMENT (What do we want to achieve?)

With thankfulness for our heritage and the blessings bestowed upon us by a gracious God, we trust in the Holy Spirit to guide Emanuel’s Lutheran Church to a hopeful future. As we strive to be the Church God calls us to be, we envision that by the year 2020 Emanuel’s will:

Be a vibrant, growing, multi-generational congregation that welcomes all people and faithfully proclaims – in the Lutheran tradition – God’s love through inspired worship, preaching, and teaching and through the administration of the Holy Sacraments.

Better reflect the rich diversity of the Seguin community in our membership.

Even more faithfully minister to our members’ spiritual, emotional and physical needs.

Be more fully engaged in the life and lives of the Seguin community.

Expand our support of national and global ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Improve our facilities so they can be fully utilized to support the activities of this congregation and the local community.

Going forward, the Team expanded the Vision Statement to Ministry Resource Areas and Goals to further explain how ELC would go about building strong leadership; grow and diversify membership; strengthen and support each other; expand involvement in social ministries and develop a facilities plan to better support our ministry and mission goals. The total report was presented to the Church Council on August 23, 2016. Next, will be the presentation of the plan to the ELC members on September 18, 2016 immediately following the service during the Sunday School hour. The accepted plan will be instrumental in completing the Ministry Site Profile which will be submitted to the Synod and the Call Process for our new Pastor will begin.

A Call Committee of 7 individuals is now being created. Five ELC members have expressed an interest in being on the committee—2 more are needed. Representation by younger members of the congregation would aid in selecting an appropriate pastor to minister to your needs.

Serving others is a desire voiced by ELC members. One way to serve others in the community is by participating in the Polka Service and Sausage Supper on October 30th. The Covenant Adult Sunday School Class has taken on the organization of the Sausage Supper. A free will offering of $8.00 per sausage plate will be solicited with all proceeds going to fund the Christian Cupboard where many folks from the Seguin community go to obtain food they cannot afford. Volunteer for this worthy effort.

Talks have taken place with Spirit of Joy (SoJ) concerning the possibility that Emanuel’s (ELC) would share its campus with SoJ. At this time, SoJ has decided to continue in their current arrangement—utilizing the Silver Center for Sunday Services. Both ELC and SoJ are in agreement that we will strive to join together more often much as we’ve done for Good Friday Service, this year’s God’s Work Our Hands 1st Responders Project, the recent WELCA salad supper, etc.

It’s an exciting time at Emanuel’s. Participate. Volunteer. Be active in the Church God Calls Us To Be.

Emanuel’s Lutheran Grief and Loss Support Ministry

Grief is the normal reaction to the loss of a loved one or to a major change in one’s lifestyle. Grief is natural and necessary as we continue to learn to adapt with the changes in our life; it is a process of adjustment, reconciliation, and healing. There is no one way to grieve or a particular time frame in which we accomplish this task. But we can benefit when we come together to share our experiences.

Emanuel’s Lutheran Grief and Loss Support Ministry is available to anyone who has lost a loved one to death or who has gone through a major change in their lifestyle. We want to provide emotional and/or spiritual support for anyone who needs our help.

Please contact Donna Simmons, the Grief and Loss Support Coordinator at 830-379-5046 for more information.

DEADLINES Information must be in the office by 8:00 am Tuesday mornings for bulletins.

Newsletter Information must be in the office by the 15th of each month.

Day School News

September, 2016

School has begun! We’re off to a great start after Parent Night and Open House. Our three fulltime teachers,

Ms. Janz in Pre-K4, Ms. Valdez in Pre-K3 and Ms. Kirksey in the Toddler classroom have all returned this year.

Ms. Smith, our Literacy Skills Program Coordinator has also returned. Teacher aides returning are Ms.

Cheyenne, Ms. Mary Jane, and Ms. Stacey. Two new aides join us this fall, Miss Holly from TLU and Ms.

Stakes with several years of experience in a daycare/school setting.

The Day School still has openings in the Toddler classroom (ages 18-36 months) and a few in the Pre-K3

classroom. Please share this information with your friends and family so that we may complete enrollment in

September. Thank you!

helping in the Garden of Eatin’ with TLU volunteers on Saturday, September 10, 8:30-12:30pm

The Church and Day School are advertised in the bi-monthly magazine, The Seguin Gazette’s “Sizzle”, this

month. Pick up a “Sizzle” and check it out today. You will find the publication in most places of business and at

the Gazette offices; it was scheduled to be mailed with a Sunday paper in August.

Mark down Sunday, October 23 on your calendar. The Day School will perform at a special service designed to

be interactive and intergenerational. We want the entire congregation to be involved in the service that day as

we host forty families from the Day School at our Sunday service. Our annual BAKE SALE fundraiser will

follow out on the lawn. This year, the money raised from our Bake Sale will go toward the purchase of

additional Montessori activities, but to be used in the Pre-K3 classroom. To date, Montessori activities have

been limited to the Pre-K4 group and we want to eventually extend those unique learning tools all the way into

the Toddler classroom; however, one step at a time.

Please consider becoming a Volunteer Angel for the Day School. The Emanuel’s congregation has been

supportive and encouraging for the Day School children and staff members for sixty-eight years and all of us

appreciate you!

The Garden of Eatin’ needs your help! The “gardeners” are meeting to prepare for the fall garden on

August 25th in the Garden and our work morning is Saturday, September 10, 8:30-12:30pm. Please consider joining our dedicated crew. This Garden is not only a joint outreach ministry with Wesley Harper United Methodist Church, but with our Day School children as well. It serves as a rich resource for curriculum to incorporate into our own to offer a unique learning laboratory for our children. Through the Garden, we are able to teach stewardship to our neighbors and the Christian Cupboard as well as the value of worthwhile work well done. If you are not able to help us work in the Garden, would you consider making a donation to the Garden fund? You may send donations to Deb at the Day School or Bonnie in the church office for the Garden of Eatin’ Fund. Thank you for your continued support of this important outreach ministry.

MUSIC MINISTRY NEWS

The Summer Singers made their swan song on the 3rd Sunday in August. They will re-emerge on the 2nd Sunday of September as the Jubilation Singers. They have really proven to possess courage and a positive attitude because on Sundays in which they sing during June, July and August, they are presented with music which is unfamiliar. In about 15 minutes of rehearsal, they are prepared to sing this music in front of the congregation. I have so much admiration for them. They are willing to take the native skills that God gave them and then give them back to their Maker as an act of joyful and grateful praise. As we approach the September through May season of service, it is time to resume the long-term schedule and to prepare for what remains of Year C and to become acquainted with the upcoming recurring Year A. The Heavenly Ringers Bell Choir will rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 6.30 until 7.15. They normally play in the church services on the 4th Sunday of each month, although this varies with the Liturgical Calendar. The Jubilation Singers rehearse on Wednesday evenings as well at 7.30 until roughly 8.45. the Jubilation Singers sing on the 2nd and 3rd Sundays of each month, although deviations from this format occur as the Liturgical Calendar dictates.

Instrumental Praise, our group of brass, woodwind and string players, usually plays on the 4th Sunday of each month (or as busy schedules allow).

The children of the Sunday School will begin having music on Sunday mornings as part of their opening activities. They will begin a special Christmas number for use at their program in December.

We always rejoice when a new brother or sister decides to try their hand at ringing, singing, or playing an instrument. Please consider yourself invited to join us as we serve God in this very special and time-honored way.

The great composer Johann Sebastian Bach is known to have written at the top of some of his most famous compositions the Latin phrase “Soli Deo Gloria.” The expression translates “to God be the glory.” And so I say as well “To God be the glory!”

God’s blessings to you and yours. Tom Engler, Director of Music

UPDATE ON OUR MISSIONARY SPONSORSHIPS—

The two young missionaries we have helped to sponsor this past year are now back home. Josh Stallings has served in Mexico and Jonathan Young in Hungary. We hope we can have them share some of their experiences with us in the very near future.

Meanwhile, during the coming year, Emanuel’s is helping to sponsor Adam and Raelene Fischer and their two young daughters as they plan to journey to Prizren, Kosovo to further God’s work in that troubled area of the world for the foreseeable future. (These are grandchildren/great-grandchildren of our own Ervin and Betty Fischer!) During the month of August they have been in Colorado undergoing Mission Training International, largely devoted to methods of how to learn the Albanian language.

As of their August message, they have raised 92 per cent of their needed finances for their undertaking with more pledges hopefully coming in since that time. Plans call for them to depart for Kosovo in October. Quoting from their closing lines while in Colorado: “We are able to spend time in the beauty of God’s creation, in His presence, learning from Jesus. Following Jesus can feel so challenging; yet this burden is still lighter than carrying the weight of our own sin. Thank you, Jesus. God is so good. We are so thankful for this time of encouragement, fellowship, and rest. . . and for what he is doing in our hearts and our family. We are so thankful for all of you.”

May each of us at Emanuel’s keep all these individuals in our prayers as we give thanks for what they have and will accomplish with our support.

To all of you at Emanuel’s: I can’t find a THANK YOU big enough to tell all of you who prayed for me, visited me, and kept me in your thoughts following my recent fall. I truly felt all of those prayers and thoughts. Your visits meant so much to me. A very special thanks to Pastor Cannon and Tom Engler for your visits. Thank you, Pastor Cannon for bringing communion to me at the hospital and at home. I’m so fortunate to be a life-long member of this congregation! With the wonderful care I received and continue to receive, I am improving! With love, Ann Erxleben
