The Formula of Concord: Good WorksThere was a debate following the Reformation about the necessity of good works. And here we want to be very careful with our language. The Reformers confessed that good works were absolutely necessary in the life of Christians. Regeneration produced a new relationship with God’s will as revealed in the moral law. Christians see that law as good and beneficial. They desire to live according to God’s design in relationship with other humans.

It is also important to confess that good works don’t save us. We are saved by grace alone through faith alone, because of Christ, and these are all gifts of God. God declares us righteous because of Jesus. We receive this righteousness by faith. This is our justification before God and it is the only way to eternal life with God. And this salvation creates in us a desire to live according to the Word. The Reformers make all of this so clear.

For the thorough statement and decision of this controversy, our doctrine, faith, and confession is as follows: Good works certainly and without doubt follow true faith, if it is not a dead, but a living faith, just as fruit grows on a good tree.

We believe, teach, and confess that good works should be entirely excluded from the question about salvation, just as they are excluded from the article of justification before God. The apostle testifies with clear words when he writes as follows, “Just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works: ‘Blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin’” (Romans 4:6-8) And again, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

We also believe, teach, and confess that all people, but those especially who are born again and renewed by the Holy Spirit, are obligated to do good works [Ephesians 2:10].

Follow the whole counsel of God. He has rescued you in Christ. He has a will for your life and it is found in His holy law. And this moral law is good, right, and true.

Pastor

June 9, 2019 at St. John

On June 7, 2009, Pastor Pool was ordained into the office of the Holy Ministry in the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, at St. John Lutheran Church. It has now been 10 years since that day, and he has been the faithful Shepherd of the Lord’s flock here in Clinton. To help him celebrate this, on Pentecost Sunday, the members of the various Boards of the congregation have put together a special day for Pastor. At both services that morning, Rev. Dr. Thomas Egger, from the St. Louis Seminary, and one of Pastor’s instructors while there, will preach the sermon. He was the preacher at Pastor’s ordination in 2009 also. Pastor Pool will be the liturgist and we will celebrate Holy Communion at both services that morning. Between services, Rev. Egger will lead the Adult Bible Study in the Fellowship Hall, starting at 9. Following the 10:15 service, at approximately 11:30, we will have a potluck meal in honor of Pastor’s 10th anniversary. Main dishes and salads and vegetable dishes are encouraged, and decorated cake will be furnished for dessert. All are welcome to attend.

Pentecost is a great day for this celebration. Pastor will wear the red stole that Sallie made for him at his ordination. The red is used for the Holy Spirit coming down in tongues of fire and being the heads of the disciples. Pastor Pool brings us the Word and administers the Sacraments in the right manner. He has been our faithful Pastor and Shepherd of the flock here for 10 years. Come out and celebrate with him and all the members of the church.

The grass withers, the flowers fade, but the Word of the Lord stands forever. And this is the Word that is preached to you!

Summer Wednesday ServicesMark your calendar for services in June, July, and August on Wednesdays at 7:00pm. Check It Out In Our Church LibraryThe Gospel of Mark – DVD

For decades, scholars have increasingly placed Mark’s Gospel in an oral context, believing it to be a written document intended to be read aloud to a gathered audience. Concordia Seminary’s dramatic presentation of the Gospel of Mark is not simply a recitation of text, nor is it a play based upon it. Instead, you will hear the text of Mark come alive as never before in an interpretation of the way in which it might have impacted those who first heard it.
