Welcome to St. John’s!

+ Holy Week at St. John’s +

Maundy Thursday: Worship at 12:15 (Chapel) and 7 pm (Sanctuary and online).

A service that remembers “the night on which he was betrayed.” Maundy means “command,” which draws upon Jesus’ final command to his disciples to “love one another.” Our worship ends with the stripping of the altar.

Good Friday: Worship at 12:15 (Chapel) and 7 pm (Sanctuary and online).

A dramatic Tenebrae service of darkness, when we remember the power of God’s love and the sacrifice of Christ on a cross.

Easter Sunday: Worship at 8:30 (sanctuary), 9:27 (Faith Center) and 11 am (Sanctuary and online).

A festival service that celebrates the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem days before he was crucified. In the Gospels, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a young donkey to the lavish praise of the townspeople who threw clothes, palms, and small branches in front of him as a sign of homage — a customary practice for people of great respect. Palm branches themselves are a widely recognized symbol of peace and victory, which makes them even more appropriate on a day like today. As it turned out, the people were confused about the kind of “king” they were honoring that first Palm Sunday. They wanted a king of victory who would conquer the Roman aggressors. What they got was a humble, vulnerable king riding a donkey — a king who would die a brutal death on a cross, dashing their hopes and dreams. A week later, Jesus would rise from the dead and prove that he is King of all kings who conquers the gravest of aggressors: sin and death itself. Hosanna to the King!

Gathering The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God

Prelude Lift High the Cross Setting by Joel Raney The Luther Ringers, Kim Lentz Director

Rosemary C. Kinard, Piano Rob Durocher, Organ

The Litany of the Palms

During the tolling of the bell, please stand and turn to face the cross of Christ.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest heaven!

Reading: Matthew 21:1-11 — following the reading: “Thanks be to God.”

Let us pray: We thank you, Lord, for your great gift of love, and for your son, Jesus Christ, who was acclaimed Son of David and King of kings by those who scattered their garments and branches of palm in his path. Bless these branches and those who bear

them. Grant that we may ever hail Jesus as our Lord and King and follow him with perfect confidence. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Hymn 344 All Glory, Laud and Honor VALET WILL ICH DIR GEBEN

Refrain: All glory, laud, and honor to you, redeemer, king,

to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.

You are the king of Israel

and David's royal Son, now in the Lord's name coming,

our King and Blessed One. Refrain

The company of angels are praising you on high; creation and all mortals

in chorus make reply. Refrain

To you, before your passion, they sang their hymns of praise.

To you, now high exalted, our melody we raise. Refrain

Please be seated

Word

We hear God’s word in scripture reading, preaching, and song Anthem Hosanna, To the Son of David Al Fedak Congregational Hymn What Wondrous Love Is This ELW 666

What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul!

What wondrous love is this, O my soul! What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss

to bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul, to bear the dreadful curse for my soul?

Duet Remember Me Aaron Adams

Carter Woolly and Rosemary Kinard Congregational Hymn O Sacred Head, Now Wounded ELW 354

O sacred head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down, Now scornfully surrounded with thorns, thine only crown; O sacred head, what glory, what bliss till now was thine!

Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call thee mine.

The Passion Reading Today we read the ancient story of Jesus’ passion, retold in narrative form. Within the reading,

the congregation joins in several songs, each listed below:

Solo Lamb of God Twila Paris Ondria Witt, soloist

Your only Son no sin to hide, but You have sent Him from Your side To walk upon this guilty sod and to become the Lamb of God.

Refrain O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God, I love the holy Lamb of God.

Oh, wash me in Your precious blood, My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

Congregational Song Lamb of God Twila Paris

Your gift of love they crucified; They laughed and scorned Him as He died. The humble King they named a fraud and sacrificed the Lamb of God.

Refrain O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God, I love the holy Lamb of God.

Oh, wash me in Your precious blood, My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

I was so lost I should have died, But You have brought me to Your side To be led by Your staff and rod, And to be called a Lamb of God. Refrain

As the bell tolls, you are invited into a time of personal prayer and reflection, followed by the Lord’s Prayer. The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Sending Forgiven and nourished, we are now sent into the world to share God’s love.
