This past month we considered all the ways that we are called to “Steward the Treasure” that is the
church. Thank you all once again for blessing our congregation - not only through the sharing of your
time and talents, but also through the sharing of your resources. You all make a difference at St.
John’s of Highland and we are so grateful! On Sunday, November 3rd we will be reminded of all the
saints that have come before us that helped to steward this treasure as we ourselves recommit to
faithful stewardship of our time, talents, and resources to ensure the strength of our ministry in the
days to come.
This month we will hear the story of another good steward as we enjoy the musical production of
“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” It will take place on Friday, November 15th
and Saturday, November 16th at 7:30 pm, as well as Saturday, November 16th and Sunday,
November 17th at 2:00 pm. Tickets are free, so contact the church office soon to reserve your tickets
as seating is limited.
While Joseph’s story is a colorful one, he is a good steward not only of the gifts he has been given,
but he also helps others steward their gifts as well. As he journeyed through his life’s story, he didn’t
always know where he would end up next, however he always trusted that God would be with him
and guide him along the way. As we continue to journey on in this new chapter of ministry for
St. John’s of Highland, we know the same is true for us as well. We have been blessed not only with
many gifts from God through our many members who seek to be faithful stewards, but we have also
been blessed with the knowledge that God continues to journey with us and will continue to guide us
as we seek to “Make Christ Known.” Thanks be to God!
Solo Deo Gloria! (To God Alone be the Glory!)

We are actively looking for new members. We are a group of women who assist our pastor by preparing the sanctuary for worship services. For example, we care for the communion linens, prepare the altar for communion and decorate the church for Easter and Christmas.
After any Worship service, please visit the sacristy* to talk to any of our members about this ministry. (exit through the church door on the pulpit side, then turn left and walk up the small staircase) If you have any additional questions you can
always call Ellen Fowkes (412)443-6853.

We hope you can join us as together we give thanks for God’s many blessings!
Our All-Church, Advent Bible Study Advent Bible Study Advent Bible Study will be starting on November 20November 20November 20ththth in order to have four weeks to delve into Adam Hamilton’s theme:
“Faithful Faithful Faithful ––– Christmas Through the Eyes of JosephChristmas Through the Eyes of JosephChristmas Through the Eyes of Joseph.” .” .”
Each Wednesday there will be two sessions to choose from:
Noon (where you can bring a bag lunch) OR
7:00 PM (which start on November 20th
but will follow our evening Advent supper and worships that take place in December)
At both times beverages and cookies will be provided.
While many Advent studies focus on Mary, this study takes time to consider the ways in which we can learn from the “sometimes overlooked” Joseph through his role in
the story of faith. Please feel free to come as you are able! All are welcome!
It is a four week series that will take place on Wednesdays
November 20th December 4th December 11th and December 18th
(We will not be meeting on Wednesday, November 27th due to the Thanksgiving holiday.)

The preschool children are learning how thankful
we are and how God has blessed each of us.
The 2’s are learning to listen and share while having fun exploring pumpkins and
turkeys. Through finger plays and songs, we are learning our colors and numbers.
The 3’s are learning how to stop, drop, and roll at Highland Fire Department,
as well as exploring the fire trucks. They are beginning to use scissors
and recognize their names when printed. The 3’s will also be making their
own version of a Thanksgiving dinner.
The 4’s are having an ice cream party to celebrate the letter “I”!
They are talking about what they are thankful for, and preparing for the
upcoming fall program. The children have been working so hard writing
their name and being great listeners.
The pre-k (5’s) are having lots of fabulous fall fun. They are also learning about
Thanksgiving and sharing what they are thankful for.
The children are preparing for a big feast!

Cookie Walk December 15, 2019 (8:00am till cookies are gone) What is it?
For those who do not particularly like slaving in the kitchen to make all different kinds of cookies, a cookie walk is the perfect solution. You get to leisurely walk throughout the Highland hall and choose from many assortments of cookies to put together however many dozen you would like. You can bring you favorite cookie tin or if you forgot it, we will have containers provided.
What is if for? The cookie walk profits will go towards our youth attending the National Youth Gathering in 2021.
What kinds of cookies will there be? We will be making sugar cookies, cream wafers, thumbprints, and buckeyes just to name a few.

My Dear Friends at St. John’s of Highland,
Having heard again the Gospel of Gratitude from the healed leper in Luke 17 this
past Sunday (October 13) I wanted to share an update with you and a word of thanks.
Sue and I are in the last part of completing the home sale of 1886 Sample Rd.
It has been quite a process of purging, donating, and moving lots of memories which
have accumulated not only in our 15 marvelous Pittsburgh years, but all of the years
and previous moves. (including lots of things we garnered from my parents)
We are now settled in Medina Ohio 45 minutes from where the rest of the Diehm Clan
live, as I serve as the Interim Pastor of St. Matthew Church, whose previous Pastor has
retired after 30 years of service there. We are renting an apartment and plan to make a
more permanent move after this year long call.
Sue and I are grateful for the love you all have shown us in this year of transition.
We are looking forward to a more retired lifestyle in the near future. Your gifts, prayers
and gifting of our Seminary at Gettysburg have been a blessing that has allowed us to
make this next step in our journey with smiles on our faces as we grieve the good-byes,
but cherish our time together.
What a delight to know that Pastor Smail, and you all, are called to lead into God’s
gracious future. We will continue to pray for your mission of “Making Christ Known”
and count blessings with you in these days!
Always yours, with love,
Pastor Bill Diehm
“A day of gratitude, a season of Thanksgiving,
a lifetime of praise!”

Christian Literacy Associates (CLA) has been providing the key to eliminate illiteracy, build relationships, and share the Good News using The Christian Literacy Series from right here
at our offices at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Highland since 1975.
“When you help others to grow, you grow yourself.”
Christian Literacy Associates needs your help to grow! We have launched the (FL)2 Campaign, Future Lights For Literacy, to be concluded on December 31, 2019. We must
raise $250,000 to be able to provide, over the next three years, free textbooks, training, and consultations for up to 72 new sites across the country. We would also be able to continue to provide free services to a few missionaries for basic literacy projects overseas.
As campaign funds continue to arrive in the mail and online, we wanted to share a story of a new (FL)2 Campaign recipient. Freedom House Ministries in Bedford, PA contacted Christian Literacy Associates requesting help in teaching basic reading skills to those they serve. This young nonprofit is a drug rehab and prison release halfway house. They are in the midst of completely renovating a hotel for its residents, which once housed several presidents back in the late 1800s to early 1900s. Thanks to recent donations from the (FL)2 Campaign, Christian Literacy was able to provide a day of free training and literacy materials to help this ministry grow in its outreach to their community.
Will you please collaborate with us as we bring in the harvest for Christ by making a donation today? Christian Literacy Associates is seeking 5,000 donors averaging $50 each to help us reach more individuals, churches, and ministries like Freedom House Ministries. Proverbs 13:11 tells of a truth we are counting on, “… but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.” Any amount you can offer to make positive impacts in the lives of children and adults in need of basic reading help is appreciated! Thank you!
Donations can be made by check: Christian Literacy Associates 311 Cumberland Road Pittsburgh, PA 15237.
If you want to give on our Square Online Store by credit card: https://squareup.com/store/christianliteracy.
If you are a Thrivent Financial policyholder, please consider donating your Thrivent Choice Dollars to Christian Literacy Associates this year.
