The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with
the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
[All bow their heads, at the following
text ]
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of
the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under
Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the
Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord,
the giver of life, who proceeds from the
Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is
adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and
apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the
forgiveness of sins and I look forward
to the resurrection of the dead and the
life of the world to come. Amen.

you are living with me. May I spend each day of my life becoming more and more like you and offer to you
all my work or studies; and all my chores with joy. Amen.

1. Amazing grace!
How sweet the sound
That saved *a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind but now I see.
2. ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
3. The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures.
4. Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
‘Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
5. When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we'd first begun.
Text: CM; verses 1–4, John Newton, 1725–1807; verse 5, anon.,
from Collection of Sacred Ballads, 1790.
Hail, Holy Queen
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our
sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor
banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our
sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears!
Turn, then, O most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of
mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us
the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving,
O sweet Virgin Mary.
V/: Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
R/: That we may be made worthy of the promises of
Christ.
Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and
snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we
humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the
heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell
Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. 7
A Journey of Hope and Healing for Those
Suffering the Effects of Abortion
•Project Rachel is a sensitive, private, free and confidential
experience with a network of specially trained priests and
caring people who understand the painful road back from
abortion. It is open to Catholics and those of other faiths.
How does Project Rachel work?
•Call the Project Rachel hotline, 312.337.1962; or
888.456.HOPE. A counselor will take the call, guiding the
woman or man suffering from abortion through the
initial steps on the road to healing.
GIVE GOD THE GLORY
A curious feature of the first half of Mark's Gospel is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the
recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theories have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for
the great "secret" revealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical
commentators offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell
people to keep it secret. The insight into this secret-keeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was
initiating his public ministry according to the pattern that Paul describes. He was doing it for the glory of
God--not for his own benefit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philippians that Jesus "humbled"
himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today's healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to
reveal the presence of God's reign among the people, not so that he himself might receive the glory, but so
that God would be glorified through him. Imitating this pattern, which Paul encourages the Jewish and Greek
Christian factions in Corinth to do, still serves us well today. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Annual Catholic Appeal Recap:
Last weekend we had the opportunity to hear the success story of the Archdioce-
san Annual Catholic Appeal. Cardinal Bernardin initiated this campaign 27 years
ago (1991) and since then it’s objectively considered one of the best campaigns; not
only because of the dollar amount raised; but the overall goal is usually exceeded
with phenomenal generosity. The 2018 goal is 16.5 million dollars.
Why is the campaign so successful?
I believe the Holy Spirit’s work has moved Catholics away from thinking that the church is a typical organi-
zation similar to a corporation. Corporations have organization charts with the CEO at the top with all the
layers of management and employees with the main purpose of making money and producing a good pro-
duct or service.
Catholics are growing in their understanding and love for the Church, not as a corporation, but as the Mysti-
cal Body of Christ; with the Risen Lord as its head and we as its members. St. Paul gives us the analogy just
as the hand and the eye are to the head of the human body each parish and parishioner throughout the world
makes up this mystical body.
• While the Church’s organizational structures are in place to insure our faithfulness to the mission; this
Mystical Body does and continues to influence the direction of the world in a positive meaningful way
with the truth of our teachings, our witness of faith, hope and love for Jesus; and His promise of eternal
life.
• The purpose of this Body is not to make money, but to accept offerings to be used appropriately and with
great accountability to serve Christ and his Body; our sisters and brothers here and around the world.
• There are brochures at the church exits and last week’s bulletin that explain in great detail the objectives
and goals of the campaign. Our goal is only 31,022 of the overall 16.5 million dollar target.
Why do people contribute?
• “I feel I should pass my blessing on. As I share my gifts through the ACA, I remember all belong to God
not me.” (taken from the marketing materials) A St. Thecla parishioner stated, “I love being a part of the
Catholic Church and its teachings of faith.”
• As of Jan. 31st $5,330 in pledges ($3,250 already paid) from St. Thecla parishioners came in before the pu-
blic appeal was made. The 16 individual gifts ranged from $10.00 to $2,500. They gave something and
inspired me to rethink my decision to participate. Instead of wondering “how much should I give” I now
simply ask “Lord, what do you want me to share?” Archbishop Cupich in his speech and our parishioner
both stated, ‘I love the church.’ I do too, and truth be told; we share what we have with who we love.
I invite everyone; to think about what they could share, even the children can share something in making up
a family’s total amount. We all can learn and remember that we are part of something much greater than just
ourselves.
If you filled out a pledge envelop please put it in today’s collection. Still considering? Pledge envelops are
located at the church exits; and feel free to ask me any questions. If St. Thecla raises more funds than the go-
al; the overage is sent directly back to us. Thank you for listening to the archbishop’s and my reflection last
weekend and reading this summary today. Thank you for the pledges given and the considerations given to
this mission.
God’s blessings, Fr. Gene

Updates
Valentine’s Day falls on the same day
of Ash Wednesday this year. No dis-
pensations are given from the fast and
abstinence practice; combine
Valentine celebrations with Mardi Gras on the 13th
and have a Happy Valentine’s Day!!
The lights in church need upgrading: when the
bulbs burn out we replace them; when the ballasts
burn out we appropriate funds to replace them too,
yet, this is costly and ballasts are no longer manu-
factured. The plan is to replace the ballasts with
LED light bulbs which require some rewiring.
Each box (along the high wall) requires two bulbs
with different light levels. The finance council sug-
gests: instead of doing the entire church all at once
start with the two boxes closest to the choir loft and
gradually work toward the sanctuary; or start with a
box that is currently without a ballast. This proce-
dure allows us to evaluate the level of light; take
advantage of the ongoing technological develop-
ments; and each row costs a manageable $1,100.
Two years ago we made these upgrades in Falcon
Hall which have resulted in cost savings.
Parking lot: Two years ago the parish completed a
complete resurfacing of the parking lot. It is time
for the lot to receive a seal coating to preserve our
investment. We are seeking quotes.
