Today we celebrate the 4th Sunday of Easter which is more commonly known as “Good Shepherd Sunday” because of references to a good shepherd in the Gospel. Often times when this Sunday approaches, I think of my family’s visit to Ireland many years ago. The reason for that is because it was my first true encounter with sheep. I was not aware of just how many sheep were in the western part of Ireland. As we drove along, we often had to stop the car to let sheep cross the road. Sometimes they were led by a shepherd and at other times they seemed to be wandering on their own. An unusual sight for me is that the sheep had spray painted marks on them of various colors in different spots of their bodies. I came to find out that their owners marked them for identification when they mixed in with other flocks. To this day I can recall the colorful procession as they crossed from one pasture to another, seeming to follow their shepherd without a care.

In our readings this Sunday we also encounter Psalm 23; a familiar one to most of us especially the refrain, “The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.” It seems an appropriate psalm for this time of the pandemic especially the lines, “Even though I walk in the dark valley, I fear no evil; for you are at my side. How appropriate as we wander like sheep thru this strange time of fear, uncertainty and isolation. It is times like these that we must turn to Jesus. We, who just like the Irish sheep, have been marked, not with paint but in the waters of Baptism. We who proclaim Jesus as our Lord and Messiah, just as Peter did when addressing the Jews in Jerusalem. We who have continually heard his voice as it was proclaimed from the Gospel. We are called to follow that voice of love and concern. We are called to trust in him.

However, as we follow the Good Shepherd, we must keep in mind, as we read in 1st Peter, that in following Jesus we must be prepared to experience suffering just as Jesus suffered to free us from sin and return us to the safety of his heavenly flock.

Mis Hermanos y Hermanas, Hoy celebramos el 4º domingo de Pascua, que se

conoce más comúnmente como "Domingo del Buen Pastor" debido a las referencias a un buen pastor en

el Evangelio. Muchas veces, cuando se acerca este domingo, pienso en la visita de mi familia a Irlanda hace muchos años. La razón de esto es porque fue

mi primer verdadero encuentro con las ovejas. No sabía cuántas ovejas había en la parte occidental de

Irlanda. A medida que avanzábamos, a menudo teníamos que detener el automóvil para dejar que

las ovejas cruzaran la carretera. Algunas veces fueron guiados por un pastor y otras veces parecían

estar vagando soloa. Una visión inusual para mí es que las ovejas tenían marcas pintadas

con spray de varios colores en diferentes puntos de sus cuerpos. Llegué a descubrir

que sus dueños los marcaron para su identificación cuando se mezclaron con

otras bandadas. Hasta el día de hoy puedo recordar la colorida procesión mientras

cruzaban de un pastizal a otro, parecían seguir a su pastor sin preocuparse.

En nuestras lecturas de este domingo también encontramos el Salmo 23; uno familiar para la

mayoría de nosotros, especialmente el refrán, “El Señor es mi pastor; nada me falta". Parece un salmo

apropiado para este tiempo de la pandemia, especialmente las líneas: “Aunque camino en el valle

oscuro, no temo al mal; porque estas a mi lado Qué apropiado mientras paseamos como ovejas a través de este extraño momento de miedo, incertidumbre y

aislamiento. Es en momentos como estos que debemos recurrir a Jesús. Nosotros, que al igual que las ovejas irlandesas, hemos sido marcados, no con

pintura, sino en las aguas del bautismo. Los que proclamamos a Jesús como nuestro Señor y Mesías, tal como lo hizo Pedro cuando se dirigió a los judíos en Jerusalén. Nosotros, que continuamente hemos

escuchado su voz tal como fue proclamada desde el Evangelio. Estamos llamados a seguir esa voz de

amor y preocupación. Estamos llamados a confiar en él.

Sin embargo, al seguir al Buen Pastor, debemos tener en cuenta, como leemos en 1er Pedro, que al

seguir a Jesús debemos estar preparados para experimentar el sufrimiento tal como Jesús sufrió
