Dear Parishioners, On October 15th the church celebrates the feast of Saint Teresa of Jesus. She was the first woman to be recognized as a doctor of the Church in 1970 by Pope Paul VI in recognition of her writings that have guided many people to learn how to pray and deepen their spiritual life. Only a few privileged ones like Saint Teresa of Jesus write books which challenge the passing of time and which continue to be read centuries later; because they seem to have come straight from the press, a word which is hot and alive like bread which has just come out of the oven. She received the grace of the affable, of knowing how to express what she was experiencing. And so her Autobiography took shape, the book of the Lord’s Mercy, written seeking the counsel of her advisers and where she above all wanted to give testimony of the graces God will lavish on a soul which is ready to receive Him. And so she seduces the reader, inviting him or her to approach God to experience his mercies. She wrote the book twice over because her confessors on reading the first account were so dazzled that they ordered her to expand it and to provide a broader doctrine of prayer life. She undertook this in her little convent of San José, one of the sixteen she founded and awakened in her daughters the desire to cultivate a daily life based on prayer. Teresa then wrote a second book called the Way of Perfection, wherein she transmitted her spiritual journey as a path of prayer, from meditation to contemplation, which can even be reached by meditating the Lord’s Prayer, which she glossed there. It came with a warning about the necessity to cultivate necessary virtues along the way such as love, detachment, and humility. Later on also at the insistence of her confessors, she would write her book entitled the Interior Castle, her most outstanding work, wherein an anonymous style she also transmits her spiritual experience comparing the soul of a person with a beautiful castle in which God as the king dwells and illuminates the soul from within. The generosity of this king is so abundant that as it is mentioned in the gospel this weekend, He wants the soul to benefit constantly from his love and gifts, that the king-God will not give up inviting us to enter and enjoy his banquet which is the Eucharist. escritos que ha guiado a muchas personas para aprender como orar y profundizar su vida espiritual.

Sólo unos pocos privilegiados, como Santa Teresa de Jesús, escriben libros que desafían al tiempo y se

siguen leyendo después de siglos, porque tienen la frescura de lo recién escrito, de una palabra viva y caliente como un pan que acaba de salir del horno.

Santa Teresa recibió la gracia de la efabilidad, es decir que poder comunicar lo que estaba viviendo en

su vida espiritual. Y de ahí nació su Autobiografía, el libro de las Misericordias del Señor, escrito buscando luz de sus consejeros y, donde ante todo quiere dejar

constancia, al narrar las gracias recibidas de lo que Dios hace en un alma que este disponible a recibirlas.

Con esta doctrina pretende “engolosinar” al lector y que se acerque a Dios que experimente sus

misericordias. El libro lo escribirá dos veces, porque deslumbrados sus confesores por el primer

relato le mandan ampliarlo y que se extienda en regalarles más doctrina sobre la oración.

Lo hará ya en su conventito de San José, uno de los dieciséis que ella fundo, donde

despertó en sus hijas el deseo de cultivar una vida diaria basada en la oración. Teresa

luego escribe su segundo libro, el Camino de Perfección, donde transmite su

itinerario espiritual como un camino -el de la oración-, que culmina en una fuente, que es la contemplación,

que puede incluso alcanzarse con el rezo del Padrenuestro que allí glosa. No sin advertir la

necesidad de cultivar unas virtudes necesarias para el camino, como el amor, el desasimiento, la humildad.

Luego ante la insistencia de sus confesores, escribirá el del Castillo Interior, su obra cumbre,

donde de forma más anónima transmite igualmente su experiencia espiritual comparando el alma como

un castillo de diamante o puro cristal donde en el centro y mitad es donde pasas las cosas más

secretas entre Dios y el alma. Este Dios es un rey que habita en el alma y que generosamente le da

gracias como lo menciona el evangelio de este fin de semana, en el cual este rey-Dios no descasa de

invitarnos siempre para que entremos a su banquete que es la Eucaristía.
