Today the Church throughout the world prays for vocations. Will you

make a special effort to ask the Lord for more voca-tions to the priesthood and religious life?

• Pray for the priests who have ministered

to you throughout your life, both living

and dead.

• Keep our parish priests in your prayers

throughout the week.

• Encourage your children, grandchildren,

or other young people to consider a

vocation as a priest or religious brother

or sister.

• Pray a rosary for more young men and

women in our diocese to respond to

God’s call.

“Yo soy el Buen Pastor”

Jesús enseña a los discípulos que el Padre lo ama porque él da su vida por las ovejas. Nuestro buen pastor da su vida cuando va en búsqueda de las ovejas perdidas. Debido a que él está dispuesto a arriesgar su vida por el rebaño, el Padre lo honrará. Luego hay las ovejas que no pertenecen a su redil. Jesús dice que él debe pastorearlas también. Ellas tendrán que aprender a conocer al nuevo pastor y unirse a un solo redil que será pastoreado por el único pastor. Me pregunto, ¿quiénes son las ovejas que no pertenecen a nuestro redil? ¿Cómo podemos ser la voz de Jesús para que ellas oigan la invitación de unirse al redil del pastor? Jesús está dispuesto a dar su vida porque el Padre lo conoce y él conoce al Padre. Esta relación íntima le da a Jesús la confianza que necesita para dar su vida en servicio de otros. Esta es la misma relación que nos da la confianza para seguir el ejemplo de Jesús como el buen pastor. «El Señor es mi pastor; nada me falta. En verdes praderas me hace descansar, a las aguas tranquilas me conduce, me da nuevas fuerzas.» Queridos hijos en el Señor, es bueno ser miembro de un rebaño grande. Sin embargo, tenemos que reconocer a los que necesitan de nuestro apoyo para regresar al redil y al cuidado del buen pastor. Pídele al Señor que te muestre a quiénes debes alcanzar esta semana. Invítalos a volver a la bendición del redil, que es la comunidad de la iglesia. Acepta el desafío y alcanza a las «otras ovejas»

While this is a case that we handled during the last boom, it is indicative of what many newcomers are facing today:

We continue to see many very sad situations where people come to Midland hoping to make a new start with the opportunities afforded by our abundance of job openings. One couple that we met with came here from Oklahoma. He hoped to get an oilfield job. He had applied at several companies and was waiting to hear back on results from the drug tests. He said that he did not use either drugs or alcohol, but it oftentimes takes several days to get the results back and no hiring could take place without those results. They had come into town on the bus since they had no vehicle. What little money they had on arrival did not take them far. With rooms in the “less than choice” motels going for $70/night it does not take long to run out of money in Midland today. They tried staying in a shelter, but it was full. Because his wife was in a wheelchair and it was raining outside, the shelter let them stay in the lobby until closing time. After that they were sent out into the cold, rainy night.

The next day the couple came into Helping Hands. The husband had pushed his wife’s wheelchair across town because he was told by a resident at the shelter that we might be able to help them. On meeting with the couple we felt fairly sure that he would have no trouble finding a job in Midland. He was big, strong and very fit and appeared to be someone who would be very willing to work. Our hearts went out to this couple who carried all of their earthly possessions in a duffle bag and four grocery sacks. We asked him why they were in such a position and he explained that his wife was in a car accident that wrecked their vehicle and left her paralyzed from the waist down. The car was not insured. Medical costs and the therapy that followed ate through just about everything that they had. The time he spent caring for her cost him his job in Oklahoma. They had hit rock bottom. But then he heard about this place in West Texas….

We were blessed to be able to find the couple a motel room. We packed up a box of food that could be prepared in the room, which would contain only a small refrigerator and a microwave. We covered the room long enough to allow him to land a job and get a few weeks of employment under his belt, and receive his first paycheck.

This is just one of many, many cases that we see each week in Midland, involving people who come here for that new start only to find the cost of living to be the highest they have ever seen. We put many of these disillusioned people on the bus and send them back home. We wish we could find a way to warn them before they set out, but even if we could, if someone is desperate enough to follow their dream, they probably would not heed the warnings.

Still, we wish the above couple well. Something tells us that with the husband’s strong sense of persistence and his loving commitment to his wife, they just might make it here. Let’s hope so.

Marriage Jubilee 2018 - All couples who are celebrating their 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, and above wedding anniversaries (Church Marriage, not civil marriage) in the calendar year of 2018 are

invited to the Diocesan Marriage Jubilee bilingual celebration on May 6, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Cathedral, San Angelo. Families and friends are invited to accompany our jubilarians to this celebration. Renewal of vows will take place within the Mass. This celebration will conclude with a reception in the Cathedral gymnasium, to which all are invited. For registration information, please contact Parish Office with Gladys Qualls.
