From the Pastor To Open Hearts to God
Dear Parishioners, The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is one of the most popular and beloved Marian celebrations in all the world. July 16th is traditionally the day in which the Catholic church honors her and recalls what happened in the 12th century when a group of hermits began to venerate the Virgin on the slopes of the Carmel mountain range. From this small group of brothers, gathered next to the fountain of Elijah, will be born what today is the Order of the Carmelites, consecrated to the Virgin of Mount Carmel, Mother of the Lord. In the Scripture many references are made to the exuberant vegetation of the sacred Mount of Carmel, linked since ancient times to the experience of God and to the ministry of the prophet Elijah. The luxuriance and beauty of Carmel evokes that other beauty that always adorned Mary: her docility to the word of God, her silent prayer and her unwavering faith. The words of the prophet Isaiah can be rightly applied to her: "They have given him the glory of Lebanon, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon". The brown scapular is along with the rosary, one of the most popular religious objects of devotion in the Catholic Church. Tradition says that Our Lady responded to the prayers of St. Simon Stock in 1251 when she gave him the brown scapular as a sign of devotion, protection as well as a sign of belonging to her. Pope Paul VI, who will be canonized as saint this coming October, spoke of Marian devotions, especially of the Scapular, says “Let the faithful hold in high esteem the practices and devotions to the Blessed Virgin approved by the teaching authority of the Church. It is Our conviction that the Rosary of Mary and the Scapular of Carmel are among these recommended practices. The Scapular is a practice of piety, which by its very simplicity is suited to everyone.” I invite you then, to celebrate the memory of the Feast of Mount Carmel, this coming Monday, July 16th, with a Mass at 6:30 p.m. outside the church on the patio dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This will be an opportunity to place ourselves in the hands of the Blessed Virgin Mary and have her intercession by the protection she gives us through the brown scapular. I will bless the scapulars after the Mass and impose them to the faithful and remind them that by wearing the scapular, we are committed to live an authentic Christian life, honoring Mary by living her virtues. In Jesus and Mary,
