2018 - 2019 ∙ ROOTED IN CHRIST: WE BELONG, WE BELIEVE, WE BECOME FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK How timely that the virtue for this month is FORGIVENESS, not only because we are in the season of Lent but also because it is an important cornerstone of our faith and one that Jesus modeled for us in his life and death. We are reminded th at forgiveness is a gift to ourselves as we let go of the burden of resentment when we forgive another person and it’s a gift to our children when we teach and model it to them. This month St. Rene Goupil students explored the virtue of forgiveness by taking responsibility for their actions and by saying I’m sorry to one another when it is needed. Saying sorry can be very tough but it is the right thing to do and it erases a lot of pain. The joyous season of Easter is upon us! Alleluia is sung throughout our Churches and our schools. If we have journeyed well through the season of Lent, then Easter should find us transformed by the new life of the Risen Christ. In the stories of the resurrection we see glimpses of the kind of transformation that occurs within one who celebrates the resurrection. The risen Christ offers peace, reconciliation, comfort and hospitality to his disciples – the very ones who abandoned Him and were disillusioned. Having witnessed the risen Jesus, they are transformed by the encounter, proclaiming and living the good news. St. Rene Goupil School continue to teach and embody these Christian values. As we hear once again the stories of the resurrection, may they inspire us to be transformed further and deeper as communities of peace, reconciliation, comfort and hospitality. I do believe that we will all see and be united with our loved ones who have passed on. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. May the truth and promise of the resurrected Christ bring us hope, comfort and peace in the trials of our everyday lives. Have a blessed Lenten Season. How timely that the virtue for this month is FORGIVENESS, not only because we are in the season of Lent but also because it is an important cornerstone of our faith and one that Jesus modeled for us in his life and death. We are reminded th at forgiveness is a gift to ourselves as we let go of the burden of resentment when we forgive another person and it’s a gift to our children when we teach and model it to them. Save the Date: Family STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Night Arts & Math) Thursday, April 11, 2019 Family Fun Night – May 9, 2019 Thank you to The Angel Foundation for Learning for supporting our daily Nutrition Program. Thank you to Ms. Yu, Ms. Pinto and Ms. Lowe for your generous support in running our program!

From Fr. Lorenzo Salandanan (Pastor of Prince of Peace Parish): Each tree is known by its yield Lk:6-39-45 “The third and final section of Luke’s Sermon on the Plain begins: And he told them a parable. There are actually four parables, three of which we read today. They are all about how to be a good disciple. The blind cannot lead the blind. And a disciple can-not be a good disciple unless he or she has learned from the teacher. Everyone who is fully trained is like the teacher who knows how to cure the blind. Before you can be a good disciple and teach others you must take care of yourself. Do not try to take a speck out of your brother’s eye until you have taken the board out of your own. Finally, only when you have purified yourself can you produce the good works that the teacher requires. Discipleship asks us to produce good deeds. But to produce them requires the integrity and purity of heart found in the teacher. When people see your good deeds they will know that this is because you have a good heart. The final parable, which we do not read to-day, is about building on the solid foundation of rock and not on sand. This is the only way to face the difficulties a disciple will encounter and survive.”

Virtue: Forgiveness

“Then Peter came and said to him, ‘Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?’ Jesus said to him, ‘Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times.”

Overview of the Virtue of Forgiveness

When someone you care about hurts you, you can hold on to anger, resentment and thoughts of revenge — or embrace forgiveness and move forward.

Forgiveness is letting go of grudges and bitterness

By embracing forgiveness, you can also embrace peace, hope, gratitude and joy.

Catholic Graduate Expectation- I AM A BELIEVER

A DISCERNING BELIEVER FORMED IN THE CATHOLIC FAITH COMMUNITY WHO:

Illustrates a basic understanding of the saving story of our Christian faith. Participates in the sacramental life of the church and demonstrates an understanding of the centrality of the Eucharist to our Catholic story. Actively reflects on God's Word as communicated through the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Develops attitudes and values founded on Catholic social teaching and acts to promote social responsibility, human solidarity and the common good. Speaks the language of life…"recognizing that life is an unearned gift and that a person entrusted with life does not own it but that one is called to protect and cherish it." (Witnesses to Faith) Seeks intimacy with God and celebrates communion with God, others and creation through prayer and worship. Understands that one's purpose or call in life comes from God and strives to discern and live out this call throughout life's journey. Respects the faith traditions, world religions and the life-journeys of all people of good will. Integrates faith with life. Recognizes that "sin, human weakness, conflict and forgiveness are part of the human journey" and that the cross, the ultimate sign of forgiveness is at the heart of redemption. (Witnesses to Faith)

Principles of Catholic Social Teaching

ROLE OF GOVERNMENT:

The state has a positive moral function as an instrument to promote human dignity, protect human rights, and build the common good. Its purpose is to assist citizens in fulfilling their responsibility to others in society. In today’s complex society, these responsibilities cannot adequately be carried out on a one-to-one basis. Citizens need the help of government to fulfill these responsibilities and promote the common good.

Clare of Assisi

Saint Clare of Assisi (sometimes spelled Clair, Claire, etc.) (July 16, 1194 – August 11, 1253), born Chiara Offreduccio, is an Italian saint and one of the first followers of Saint Francis of Assisi. She founded the Order of Poor Ladies, a monastic religious order for women in the Franciscan tradition, and wrote their Rule of Life—the first monastic rule known to have been written by a woman. Following her death, the order she founded was renamed in her honor as the Order of Saint Clare, commonly referred to today as the Poor Clares. She persuaded a might pope that women were his equal and taught her sisters to move so lightly on God’s earth that even the dust would be at peace

APRIL Virtue: Justice

“But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” (Amos 5:24)

Catholic Graduate Expectation: A Reflective, Creative and Holistic Thinker

Principles of Catholic Social Teaching: Stewards of Creation

Page 15: ST. RENÉ GOUPIL - TCDSB

2018 – 2019 ∙ ROOTED IN CHRIST: WE BELONG, WE BELIEVE, WE BECOME

Overview of the Virtue of Justice

Justice means that we deal fairly with others, recognizing the equality and dignity of all.

It requires that we work to insure that all people, especially the poor and the weak, have access to opportunities.

It assumes that none of us is free until all of us are.

One of the central tenants of Catholic social teaching is the dignity of the human being; we are all created in the image of God, and therein rests our inalienable dignity.

Justice is extended to people, animals, the environment; the whole universe.

Catholic Graduate Expectation -- I HAVE IDEAS!

A REFLECTIVE AND CREATIVE THINKER WHO:

Recognizes there is more grace in our world than sin and that hope is essential in facing all challenges. Creates, adapts, and evaluates new ideas in light of the common good. Thinks reflectively and creatively to evaluate situations and solve problems. Makes decisions in light of gospel values with an informed moral conscience. Adopts a holistic approach to life by integrating learning from various subject areas and experience.

Examines, evaluates and applies knowledge of interdependent systems (physical, political, ethical, socio-economic and ecological) for the development of a just and compassionate society.

Principles of Catholic Social Teaching STEWARDSHIP OF CREATION:

Catholic tradition insists that we show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. We

are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God’s creation. This

environmental challenge has fundamental moral and ethical dimensions which cannot be ignored.

St. Catherine of Genoa

Saint Catherine of Genoa (Caterina Fieschi Adorno, 1447 – 15 September 1510) was an Italian Roman Catholic saint and mystic, admired for her work among the

sick and the poor[2] and remembered because of various writings describing both these actions and her mystical experiences. She was a member of the noble Fieschi family, and spent most of her life and her means serving the sick, especially during the plague which ravaged Genoa in 1497 and 1501. She died in that city in 1510.

Reflection Inspired by the Faith of Catherine of Genoa

“We must not wish anything other than what happens from moment to moment, all the while, however, exercising ourselves in goodness.” -Saint Catherine of Genoa

“Since I began to love, love has not failed me.” – St. Catherine of Genoa

This Moment

A neighborhood. At dusk.

Things are getting ready to happen

out of sight.

Stars and moths. And rinds slanting around fruit.

But not yet.

One tree is black.

One window is yellow as butter.

A woman leans down to catch a child who has run into her arms this moment.

Stars rise.

Moths flutter. Apples sweeten in the dark.
