FROM THE PASTOR...

Dear Parishioners,

Two recent deaths to comment on this weekend. Last Wednesday, Delia Dela Cruz phoned me from the Philippines to inform me that her mother, Teresita Alcantara, died there this past Monday. After a personally difficult 2016 with the death of their daughter (Abigail), Delia and Joe, along with Teresita, travelled to the Philippines after Christmas for a stay of over two months. It was a respite they needed and looked forward to. Although I identify Teresita as Delia’s Mom, she was actually the ―matriarch‖ of an extended family whose children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are regulars in the congregation of our Sunday 8 am and 11 am Masses. Teresita herself was a daily communicant here, sometimes waking Delia up extra, extra early so they wouldn’t miss the weekday 9 am Mass at St. Raphael’s. I was always edified how, in a protective mode, Teresita was held near and dear at the geometrical center of any family group that was accompanying her anywhere. You could not miss this visible sign of a family’s tender love and respect for her unique role. Teresita would have turned 90 in March. In 2007, I officiated here at the funeral of Teresita’s husband, Josue, with whom she is now reunited. Teresita’s funeral and burial will be in the Philip-pines. Please keep her wonderful family in your prayers as they deal with this loss. The second death that notes mention is that of the famous NYPD Detective Steven McDon-ald, who died about ten days ago. He became almost fully paralyzed in 1986 when he con-fronted—and was shot by– a young robbery suspect in Central Park. Fully and defensively Catho-lic to his core, McDonald rejected a destiny of bitterness and self-pity, and became a very public evangelist for Jesus’ message of forgiveness and respect for life. Several years ago, I arranged to have McDonald visit us one evening here at St. Raph-ael’s. He told his poignant story in our church and gave his Christian witness about mercy, which powerfully touched all present. I especially remember how he bluntly admitted that, in the Central Park shooting, he may (may!) have had a split-second lapse of attention in accosting the suspect. The honesty in that admission was, in itself, a testimony to the Detective’s conscience and char-acter. McDonald is justly hailed as hero, but, more deeply, is now being hailed as a real saint for our times. Indeed, there are already some local rumors about pursuing his beatification. Some of us have personally seen or even met Mother (Saint) Teresa of Calcutta or St. John Paul II. Maybe one day we’ll be able to say we also saw or met a real saint who one evening visited our own parish church in Long Island City. -Father Jerry Jecewiz

THREE KINGS CELEBRATION / CELEBRACION DE LOS REYES MAGOS

A few days after our Three Kings celebration here for children and families, the Kings visited ―special children‖ in their homes to assure they were not left out in the gift distribution. Such children are de-velopmentally disabled or confined to wheelchairs. The photos below evidence the joy of those who received the home visits. Thanks to our Vino Nuevo Apostolate for organizing the whole program.
