FROM THE PASTOR…

Dear Parishioners, This past week, Catholic Charities notified us that our Food Pantry’s fresh pro-duce delivery, which up to now has been weekly, will take place, from this point on, every two weeks. This is something all we all saw coming eventually: supplies running low. Feeding America, an umbrella coalition of food banks and pantries, has said that there has been a 60% increase of clients needing food, when this past summer is compared with the same period in 2019. Intensifying this need is the fact that hundreds of food pantries have shut their doors during the pandemic-- in New York City, the majority of the closed pantries be-ing in Queens and the Bronx (boroughs that also have the highest unemployment rates in the City). In our country at this time, one in eight households doesn't have enough to eat. It’s called “food insecurity”: the lack of access to the amount or kind of food needed to keep people in good health. About two-thirds of the households with food insecurity before the pandemic were not poor, but now food insecurity and poverty are on the rise together. While St. Raphael’s Food Pantry takes significant money to operate, it also takes a huge amount of work. I think most of our parishioners don’t realize how labor-intensive this outreach actually is. We owe a huge thank-you to the volunteers who spend many hours almost daily ordering, receiving, unpacking, bagging and distribut-ing the items for distribution. Thank you, also, to generous benefactors who back this ministry financially--we couldn’t do it without your support! -Father Jerry Jecewiz

Question: What’s the difference between All Saints Day and All Souls Day?

Answer: All Saints Day, celebrated by the Roman Catholic church (and now other churches) on November 1, is set aside to honor church members believed to have gone to heaven. All Souls Day, November 2, was created to commemorate those who died baptized but without having confessed their sins, and thus they are believed to reside in purgatory. Roman Catholic doctrine teaches that intercessions (prayers) by earthly church members can cleanse these departed souls and prepare them for heaven.
