Do you put God first in all things?

Possessions, money, power, ego can easily

become gods to many of us. Do a quick

check of what is important to you. Is God at

the very top of the list? If not, your priorities

need to be re�adjusted. Don’t let earthly

things become a god before God. This is

also the first commandment � I am the Lord

your God, you shall not have any strange

gods before me.�

First Reading: Acts 10:34a, 37�43 �

In this passage, Peter testifies that he and his followers saw

the miracles performed by Christ, witnessed His death, and

believe in His resurrection. Now they will proclaim to all that

Christ is the Son of God. �

Second Reading: Colossians 3:1�4 �

Paul tells the Colossians that they will appear with Christ in

glory. They should be mindful of things above rather than

things on earth. �

�

Gospel: John 20:1�9 �

In vivid detail, John tells us that when Mary Magdalene

visited Christ’s tomb, the tomb was empty. She told the

apostles, who ran to the tomb, and saw the “wrappings” on

the ground. The disciple who entered first “saw and

believed.” �

Inspiration for the Week�

�

Our world wants us to believe that life is only what we make

of it. Today, we realize how untrue that is. Life is ultimately

about what God makes of it, and the resurrection of Jesus

reveals this. Alleluia, Christ is risen!�

�

Who do you understand yourself to be? What we did

yesterday, are doing today, and may do tomorrow pretty

much determine how we perceive ourselves. We even

perceive Jesus this way in limiting our vision of him to his

earthly accomplishments. We know through today’s

triumphant celebration that Christ is much more than his

earthly legacy. The transfigured and resurrected Christ is

the beginning, the end, and the fulfillment of all things and

every person.�

�

All that Jesus did stands in second place to

who we now know him to be. Do we realize that

this will be our journey too? Christ is risen.

Alleluia, alleluia! �

Gospel Meditation�

Alleluia � He is Risen!�

Encourage Deeper Understanding of Scripture�

�

When we awoke this morning, we found ourselves blessed

with another day. It is Easter Sunday. As that thought

crossed our minds, did we find ourselves saying “so what”

or “alleluia”? For many, today is truly a day of alleluia. For

others, it is just another day of “so what.” Faith makes a

huge difference. It not only makes a difference in how we

understand today and the significance of what we

celebrate, it also makes a huge difference in terms of how

we understand ourselves.�

�

Succeed, live well, be productive, find your niche, follow

your dreams, make money, protect your social status, be

politically correct, and keep your preferences to yourself are

pretty good examples of the messages our secular life

wants us to hear. In and of themselves, they don’t sound all

that harmful. But when really examined, they are. The life of

resurrection embodied in the Gospel tells us a much

different story.�

�

Life keeps us busy. We are always connected, distracted,

occupied, and working. For many of us, an agenda awaits

us before we even start our day, and unfinished stuff is

brought with us when we retire at night. Make the best of

life and “find your own road to happiness are messages we

all too easily believe. The “so what” response to the new life

of resurrection is often the result of believing that life is only

what I make it. What God has to say isn’t important to me

securing my next raise.�

�

Sadly, we live as if the grave is the end. While we may give

the wonder of heaven a blink now and then, its glory really

doesn’t impress us or matter all that much. It’s all about the

here and now and what I need to do today to get where I

want to be tomorrow. We tend to put off considering the

one significant “tomorrow” that will come the millisecond

after we take our last breath. When that happens, will we

want to be thinking “so what?” or “alleluia”?�

�

There is only one Jesus, one mission, and one resurrection.

There is also only one of us. Have you ever pondered what

one solitary, humble human life can do? Faith, not our

world, tells us how special we are. We are not robots. We

are not replaceable. We have one shot. There are no do�

overs. Love is at our core and unites us together as one

with the God of love who so desperately wants us to be

with Him forever. This may not match our secular agenda,

but it ought to make our true inner agenda leap for joy.

There doesn’t need to be an end. I can live forever. Alleluia.�

Sacred Linen Ministry�

�

Each week, the Sacred Linen Ministry care for the

laundering of the purificators and towels used at each Mass

by the Celebrant and Eucharistic Ministers. Linens are

treated, washed and ironed. Volunteers are needed for this

Ministry (approximately once every two months). Linens

may be picked up and dropped off at your convenience.�

�

Diocese of Paterson by Mandate of the Bishop�

As cases of coronavirus increase exponentially, it

is a moral imperative for all people to do what is

humanly possible to prevent the spread of the

illness. Large gatherings of people have rapidly

become a health risk. The following provisions for

the Diocese of Paterson are effective immediately.�

�� All public Masses are hereby suspended in the Diocese

of Paterson until further notice.�

�� The celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation is

suspended.�

�� The celebrations of Frist Penance and First Holy

Communion are to be deferred in all parishes until

further notice.�

Five Steps for Praying�

when you’re feeling overwhelmed�

�

Stress, anxiety, and the emotions that accompany crisis are often described as feeling like giant waves crashing around

you. Calm your heart and your spirit by taking time to reflect on where you have been, where you are, and where you would

like to go.�

�

In his�Spiritual Exercises,�St. Ignatius of Loyola provides the Examen as a five�step tool for reflection. The focus of this tool

is to heighten your awareness of God’s presence in the experiences of your daily life. The following steps are an adapted

Examen for reviewing and processing your situation following a crisis. �

�

This retreat is not intended as a substitute for seeking mental health support after a situation of loss or crisis but instead is

an opportunity to process the experience through the lens of faith. As you move through these steps, consider writing down

your thoughts or feelings in a journal.�

1. Find a safe and quiet place to become aware of God’s presence�

Recent events may seem to be swirling around you. Honor your own beauty and dignity by stepping away to breathe. Jesus

told us that there is a time to “Come away … all by yourselves and rest a while” (Mark 6:31). You could say something like

“God, help me to calm the storm in my heart and mind so that I can hear your voice and feel your peace.”�

�

2. Review what has occurred through the lens of gratitude�

Gratitude is the foundation of our relationship with God. In every situation, even the most difficult, we are given gifts. Maybe

God’s gift to you is your safety or hearing a loved one’s voice or the feeling of the sun on your face. Tell your story of the

recent overwhelming event to God. Begin when you first became aware of the situation that is now affecting you. When did

you first hear about/know that this crisis situation was going to affect you? What were your first thoughts and feelings? Then

what occurred? Pay attention to the emotions that are evoked as you tell the story to God. What are the little details that

stand out to you that you may not have noticed before? God is speaking in those details. Who are the people that you

interacted with during the crisis situation? As you think about them, how do you feel? The story will take various turns;

continue to share with God in your mind and heart. As you move closer to the present in the story, how have your thoughts

and feelings changed?�

�

3. Pay attention to your emotions, recognizing they are sacred�

St. Ignatius embraced emotion. He believed that the presence of the Holy Spirit became clearly revealed in the emotions

that are evoked when we reflect on our experiences. As you reflect on your story, what were the emotions you felt? When

were they stronger than others? What were the moments when the feelings that surfaced surprised you? Can you pinpoint

one or two moments or interactions where emotion arose from within you? Thank God for speaking to you through those

emotions.�

�

4. Ask God to speak to your open heart�

Now that a couple of moments have been pinpointed where feelings surfaced in the recent situation, you can pray to receive

insight from these experiences. Allow the Holy Spirit to direct you toward one or two moments, images, or feelings that God

is calling you to examine with greater intensity. It could be one word or phrase that someone said to you. It could be your

emotional reaction to something that occurred. It could be a tiny detail that you think no one else noticed. As you hold that

moment or feeling in your heart, words of prayer may begin to form around that experience. Let the prayer grow.

Somewhere in your reflection on this recent crisis situation, God is providing you with messages. With the Holy Spirit’s

guidance, begin to look for those messages in the emotions, images, and interactions. What can you learn about yourself?

What might some of the messages be that can be taken away from the experience? What is God whispering to you in your

heart?�

�

5. Look toward tomorrow�

These messages have been given to us as a gift from God. When waves of stress and crisis are crashing over us, it is

difficult to see the shoreline. Having embraced the truth in emotion and extracted messages, however, we now can choose

our next destination. You are now seeing the shoreline more clearly. You are strengthened to look forward to the future.

How can you incorporate the wisdom that has been given to you into the next steps of your journey? Ask God to provide you

with strength for the challenges that lie ahead. Pray this prayer: “God, in the next few hours and days, please help me to …”�

Address any concerns that are in your heart about the next steps of your journey in prayer. Your life is a gift, and it is

adorned with gifts from God. Recognize with gratitude that you are loved and never alone as you walk forward on your

journey.�

�

End with the Our Father or pray quietly in your own way.�

Celebrate the Sacraments�

Baptism: Baptism is celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the

month after the 11:00 am Mass and on the 4th Sunday during the

11:00 am Mass. Please call the Parish office at least two months

in advance to make arrangements.�

First Reconciliation & First Communion: Our Faith Formation

Program begins with Grade 1. First reconciliation and First

Communion is a 2�year program. Please call the Faith Formation

office to register your child.�

�

Confirmation: Confirmation is a 2�year program beginning in

9th grade. Students will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in

the spring of their 10th grade year.�

�

Matrimony: Couples are asked to contact the Parish at least

one year in advance.�

�

Anointing of the Sick: Please call the Parish office at anytime

for Communion calls or visitation of the sick or elderly. Holy

Communion may be brought to the home of any person who is

temporarily or permanently homebound.�

�

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA): RCIA prepares

adolescents and adults for Baptism and full Communion into the

CRS Rice Bowl�

CRS Rice Bowl is Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten faith�in�

action program. It offers opportunities for your family to

engage daily with spiritual pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting and

almsgiving. It is an opportunity to come together as a

community and reflect on what it means to live out our

Gospel call and encounter those most in need.�
