his month, the movie A Hidden Life was released to widespread acclaim. Directed
and written by Terrence Malick, the film tells the story of Franz Jaegerstatter, an Austrian conscientious objector who refused to take an oath to Hitler and serve in the German army in World War II. He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2007 as a martyr of the Church. His feast day is May 21st. Showings seem now to be only in Manhattan, but when the movie becomes available, we will plan to have our own. Blessed Franz was the illegitimate child of Rosalie Huber and Franz Bachmeier who could not afford a marriage, born on May 20, 1907. His father was killed in the first World War; his mother married a man named Jaegerstatter who cared for Franz and raised him in the small Austrian village of St. Radegund. As an older teenager, Franz belonged to a gang and became a heavy drinker. In his late twenties, while working in the iron mines, he had a religious experience which brought him back to the Faith and led him to begin to attend Mass daily. He thought of becoming a priest, but a priest told him that his parents depended upon him for support, and so he worked on the family farm, even as his spiritual life grew ever deeper. He married a young woman, Franziska, as devout as himself (they honeymooned in Rome) in 1936. When not busy with his farm work, he became the local sexton in his parish. A Secular Franciscan, he was known to refuse the customary offerings for his services at funerals, preferring the spiritual and corporal works of mercy over any remuneration. During the late 1920s, the Nazi movement was growing in Austria, and, from the beginning, Franz
saw it as anti-Christian and spoke openly against it. After Hitler occupied Austria, Franz, was the only local citizen to vote against the annexation of Austria by Germany (the Anschluss), Franz compared the Austrian vote to join with Germany to the crowds choosing Barnabas over Jesus on Good Friday. (His own parish priest in St. Radegund was also outspokenly anti-Nazi.) In 1943, Franz was called up for military service and at the induction center, announced his refusal to fight. His offer to carry out non-violent services was refused. His fellow villagers (and his bishop) urged him to serve, knowing that he would be punished otherwise. Only his wife and three daughters supported him. After a time, in February 1943, he was arrested by the Nazis and sent to prison. In prison he wrote a catechism for his godson; we have many of the letters he wrote to his wife. He was condemned to death and was beheaded by guillotine in Berlin on August 9, 1943 (the same day, we think, that Sr. Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) was killed at Auschwitz). Just before the execution he wrote to his family: “…It was not possible for me to free you from the pain that you must now suffer on my account. How hard it must have been for our dear Savior when, through His sufferings and death, he had to prepare such a great sorrow for His Mother - and together they bore all of this out of great love for us sinners…. And now your husband, son, father, son-in-law and brother-in-law greets you once more before his final journey. The heart of Jesus, the heart of Mary, and my heart are one in time and eternity….” The Nazis cremated his body, but his ashes were returned to St. Radegund where his grave became quickly a center of devotion.
