L ast Monday I received a phone call from Cardinal Dolan approving our request to name our parish
community for Saint Marianne Cope, a Sister of St. Francis of Syracuse who traveled to Hawai’i to care for persons suffering from Hansen’s Disease (leprosy) on the island of Moloka’i, where Saint Damien (the Leper) had earlier established a parish community for the many native Hawaiians and foreign born residents afflicted with the illness. As I had written before, this was a decision that was recommended by the implementation group formed by representatives
of both St. Joseph and St. Thomas, after consultation with the parish at large, and confirmed by the lay leadership bodies comprising
our Pastoral Advisory Council and our Finance Committee. By canon law, both churches will retain the names in which they were consecrated. To share this good news with us, His Eminence will celebrate Mass for us on Pentecost Sunday, June 9th at 11:00 am in St. Thomas Church, with a reception afterwards. Over the next several months, clergy, staff, and I will help you get to know this amazing woman who will now
play an important role in our spiritual life.
