A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

+ Pax et Bonum!

Today we gather together to celebrate the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We come together as God’s people to be strengthened for the Christian life. We do welcome all of our guests and visitors who are joining us for Masses this weekend. It is great to be able to pray with you around the Altar of the Lord! In a special way we welcome our friends from this weekend’s ballgames at Grand Park! We’re glad you’re here!

I wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone for the wonderful celebration this past Tuesday evening for my 30th Anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood! What a fun and spectacular evening! I thank all of you for your prayers, your kind wishes, your cards, all the gifts, and your amazing support over all the years! I am both truly humbled by all of it and greatly honored! I am truly the most blessed priest in the entire world! Thank you! Most especially I’d like to thank the committee that put the entire celebration together: Connie and Tim Anderson, Bill and Sheryl Clifford, Carla Erickson, Jen and Steve Downing, Janet Thompson, Kevin Muller, Deb and Pat Biddlecombe, Joey Garcia, and Kathy Lengerich. And thanks also go to our entire Parish Staff and Crew for all they did to help out and for all they do every day! God bless all of you!

We received word this past week from our Diocese and our Diocesan Vocation Director, Fr. David Hasser, that our Diocese has three new seminarians entering formation for the priesthood next month, and two of those new seminarians are from St. Maria Goretti. Bill Thompson, son of Janet and Frank Thompson, and Brian Farrell, son of Kathy and Dan Farrell, have been accepted for seminary formation by our Diocese. Bill is a graduate of Marian College and will be beginning Pre-Theology studies at Mundelein Seminary outside of Chicago, where he will join our own Will Summerlin. Brian, who just graduated from Guerin Catholic High School this spring, will be attending St. John Vianney College Seminary in Minnesota. We are very proud of both of these young men. We keep all three of our seminarians from our Parish in our prayers constantly. They need them as they discern God’s will in their lives.

This is probably a good time to remind all of us, that just because a young man goes to Seminary to discern God’s will, does NOT mean that that young man is going to come out a priest. That’s not the way it works. We need all Catholic young men to ask themselves if God is calling them to be a priest or deacon or religious. We are most grateful to God whenever any young man takes it seriously enough to go away and find out what God wants. Will, and Bill, and Brian, need us to pray for them so that they can hear clearly God’s call. We are excited! We want the very best for all three of these young men, and God willing, it would be awesome if they were ordained priests. But that is NOT our call, or their call. It’s God’s will that all of us seek in our lives. St. Maria Goretti Parish has been blessed with several very good young men who have gone to seminary, only to find that God was calling them elsewhere. That’s what the process is for! We are still most grateful that they went away to find out. And I believe that each and every one of them will serve God and His Church even more with their lives from the experience of seminary. We are grateful for all of our young people! So many of our young people are teaching in Catholic schools, and serving as youth ministers, and catechists, and music ministers, in many different places in our Church. We are proud of all of you!

All of this is further evidence that the Elijah Cup tradition that we have been doing now for over fifteen years, is working! The Elijah Cup combined with Eucharist Adoration, has blessed this Parish with all kinds of vocations to all of the differing ministries of the Church! If you or your family would like to receive the Elijah Cup at Mass some Sunday coming up, please contact the wonderful Mrs. Ann Worcester at 317-669-7095 to get on the schedule. It’s a great opportunity for all of us to pray for more vocations, for our young people, and for the future of our Church!

Have a great week! May God keep all of us in His love and peace!

In Christ, Fr. Kevin Life is like tennis: the one who serves the most seldom loses!

Welcome! For more than 21 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you! God Bless you. —Father Kevin

Carmel is hosting Dr. Paul Kengor at 7 pm on Tuesday, August 1 to discuss his newest book, A Pope and A Presi-dent, which tells the little-known story of the friendship of Pope St. John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan. He explores the similarities and spiritual bond between the pope and the president.

REFLECTION FOR THE 16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Today we hear, “Jesus said, ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field. It is the smallest

of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.’” Jesus is sharing with us this week that even though something looks small and insignificant, it can blossom and grow into something great. What small gift can you offer God this week so He can bless it and cause it to blossom for His Glory?

Hobbies: Health and fitness, being outdoors, woodwork-

ing, and DIY projects!

What’s the best thing about SMG? The community–everyone was so friendly and welcom-

ing, more so than any parish we have been to in the area.

Favorite Prayer:

“Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep” children’s prayer. My

grandparents and mother would say it with me every

night, and once my children are able to talk, we will all

say it together.

Favorite Saint:

He’s not a saint yet but we LOVE Pope Francis.

Prayer for the future: We pray for good health and happi-

MOBILE PANTRY NOTES

We are helping those in need with our mobile pantry

monthly now through October. We helped a record

number of 76 families in the May drive. Thanks to all

who have helped at any of our mobile pantries! A spe-

cial personal thanks to Yvonne Clark, Missy Hopp, and

Sarah Weddige, as well as their entire families who

are always willing to help at these important events!

We are looking for more families or groups interested

in helping out with any of the upcoming mobile pan-

tries, such as August 16. If you or a group (BCC, CCM,

or CRHP, for example) are interested in helping,

please send an e-mail to [email protected].

Beginning on Tuesday, July 25,

and continuing for five weeks, all parishioners who are on our St. Maria Goretti Flocknote distribution

will receive the first in a series of five messages from world-renowned author, speaker, and theologian

Bishop Robert Barron. These messages contain a short video and quick discussion questions on topics

fundamental to our lives. They are:

 Short

 To-the-Point

 Made for Busy People

This week, as we celebrate Father Kevin’s commitment to God and all of us as God’s church, let’s honor him by committing ourselves to our own faith formation. And it won’t get much easier than through engaging

in these messages!

Do yourself a favor and take part!

Topics Include: — Who is God and how do we know? —

— Who is Jesus and why is he different? — — What did Jesus really teach? —

— Why the Church matters — — How to pray and why it matters —

If you do not receive Flocknotes from us, sign up today! Flocknote is simply an email and/or text message ser-

vice that allows us to communicate with the parish more effectively. It’s a great way to stay in-the-know on hap-penings within the parish. We promise that it will not

result in you receiving spam—just SMG communications! You can sign up at:
