Background• Scientists that research economics and business from Eastern European

(EE) countries have a number of barriers towards publication. • First, economics and business research in capitalist and

communist/socialist societies was very different due to the ideological reasons until early 1990s (Brown, 2007).

• Second, researchers from EE countries had a hard time in catching the step with their colleagues from developed countries, since due to the diverse institutional milieu of scientific research (Olenik, 2012).

• Third, linguistic reasons due to the fact that English has become the main language of science are important for authors from non-English speaking countries, especially in social sciences (Gantman, 2011).

• Fourth, future professionals are rarely instructed on scientific writing and manuscript preparation, and usually learn the craft of scientific writing only through painstaking process of trials and errors (Keys, 1999; Pejić Bach, 2012).

Goal of the paper• In Croatia there is a number of public and private institutions

that offer educational programmes in economics and business. • Besides teaching, their role is also to participate in research in

the field of economics and business and to publish results of their research in scientific publications.

• The goal of the paper is to examine publication patterns and trends of economics and business science publications (EBS) in Croatia by applying bibliometric analysis to Croatian public and private educational institutions in peer-reviewed publication published between 1991 and 2012 (1st November).

List of institutions• A source for finding a complete list of institutions that offer

educational programmes in economics and business was the website of the Croatian Agency for Science and Higher Education (ASHE).

• ASHE takes record on institutions that have the license to offer educational programmes from Ministry of science, education and sports of the Republic of Croatia.

Data source on publications• As the data source for the publications we used the Croatian

Scientific Bibliography (CROSBI), which evidences scientific papers published in the period from 1991 to the present. CROSBI bibliography is the important source of the Croatian scientific output, with the goal to increase the public awareness of Croatian research results.

Page 10: Mirjana Pejic Bach - Karmen Abramovic - Publication Patterns

Detecting publications of institutions• Possible approaches to detecting publications of institutions

that offer educational programmes in economics and business could be: (1) to trace publications by authors employed at these institutions or (2) by institutions themselves.

• Since list of employees of institutions are not publicly available, we had to trace publications by institutions.

Limitations• Not all of the publications published by Croatian researchers

are registered in CROSBI, and this represents the major limitation of this study, since authors themselves input the data on publications in CROSBI.

• We have analyzed the period from 1991 to 1st November, 2012.

• It is also important to mention that since we traced publications by institutions, some of the publications are recorded two or more times, if the authors come from two or more institutions.

CONCLUSIONS

Page 26: Mirjana Pejic Bach - Karmen Abramovic - Publication Patterns

Concentration & Internationalization

• Publications are concentrated, and institutions from Croatian biggest cities (Zagreb, Osijek, Rijeka, Split and Varaždin) generate the biggest number of publications.

• Number of publications per academic staff (working on employment contract and contractual agreement bases ) leads to the same conclusion

• Publications in scientific journal articles in recent periods (2007 – 1st November, 2012) are characterized by co-authorship from one or more foreign countries, indicating the trend of internationalization.

• Also, authors participate in an increasing number of international scientific conferences and this also contributes to the internationalization of EBS research.

Page 27: Mirjana Pejic Bach - Karmen Abramovic - Publication Patterns

Quantity and/or quality?• If we closely observe the number of publications by year we

can note an upward trend of published papers. For example, a number of book chapters have increased greatly, starting with 13 publications from 1991-1996, 275 publications from 1996-2002, 442 announcements from 2002-2007, and 770 publications from 2007-1.11.2012.

• One of the possible reasons for the increase in number of scientific publications is the changes in legal regulations regarding advancements in scientific careers that emerged in 1993, and was constantly improved in terms of the more strict advancement criterion
