GETTING AROUND
Trams An extensive network of trams covers the city, running north–south and east–west along most major roads. Trams run roughly every 10 minutes Monday to Friday, every 15 minutes on Saturday and every 20 minutes on Sunday.
Trains Flinders Street Station is the main metro train station connecting the city and suburbs. The ‘City Loop’ runs under the city, linking the four corners of town.
Taxis Melbourne’s taxis are metered and require an estimated prepaid fare when hailed between 10pm and 5am. You may need to pay more or get a refund depending on the fi nal fare. Two of the largest taxi companies are Silver Top (www.silvertop.com.au) and 13 Cabs (www.13cabs.com.au).
Melbourne’s public transport uses myki (www.myki.com.au) cards. You need to buy a $6 card and put credit on it before travel. Cards are sold at stations, 7-Eleven or newsagents, and some hostels collect them from departing guests. Travellers can buy a myki Visitor Pack ($14) for one day’s travel and discounts on some sights, available from the airport, Skybus terminal or the PTV Hub at Southern Cross Station.
Top up myki cards at 7-Eleven stores and machines at most train stations and some tram stops in the city centre; online top-ups can take 24 hours. Zone 1, which is all most travellers will need, costs $3.90 for two hours, or $7.80 for the day.
Tullamarine Airport 20kms northwest of the city centre
Skybus $18, 20-30 minutes $50-75, 25 minutes
A popular airport transport option is Sky Bus (www.skybus.com.au), a 24-hour express bus service from Southern Cross Station to Tullamarine Airport. It also off ers a free transfer service to several city hotels from Southern Cross Station; otherwise you’ll need to catch onward transport or a taxi to your destination.

5 Take a look inside Manchester Unity Arcade (1932), a beautiful art deco ar-cade and landmark Melbourne building.
1 Campbell Arcade, also known as Degraves Subway, was built for the ’56 Olympics and is now home to indie stores and contemporary art exhibitions.
Take a Break: Hopetoun Tea Rooms in Block Arcade is perfect for a re-freshing pot of Darjeeling and a slice of something sweet.
3 Built in 1891 and featuring etched-glass ceilings and mosaic floors, Block Arcade is based on the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan.
6 Take time to soak up the street art on Duckboard Place and ACDC Lane, the latter named after iconic Australian rockers.
2 A good place to spot street art is on cafe-filled Centre Place, where there are also excellent examples of stencil graffiti.
