Students must meet all graduation requirements, totaling 80 credits, over the course of grades 10 to 12.

A full course is worth 4 credits and a 10-week course is worth 2 credits. At least 16 credits must be at

the grade 12 level, including Language Arts 12, and 3 other grade 12 courses.

The Academy of Indigenous Studies is a full 20-credit program that can be taken by all

Central Okanagan Public School students throughout grades 10 through 12. While a

broad focus on British Columbia's Indigenous culture is examined, students will

experience a more holistic approach with the local Okanagan culture. Students will

participate in authentic, hands-on Indigenous activities aimed at enriching their

understanding of the local culture while making a positive contribution to the

community. This is a unique and innovative opportunity for students to gain a greater

sense of how their interaction with local Indigenous culture has an effect on future

generations of British Columbians.

The goal of the Gifted and Enriched Program is to address and provide educational opportunities

to students with an aptitude, interest or potential to go beyond the scope of provincially offered

curriculums. The Advanced Placement Program exists to provide an opportunity for students to

demonstrate an advanced level of competency in the curriculum which is recognized by post-

secondary institutions. Students wishing to pursue a post-secondary career would benefit from a

‘college preparatory’ course of study, which AP Prep Programs and the Advanced Placement

courses provide. The benefits not only include supplementary course credits but also helps in the

successful transition of the student to a post-secondary career setting. In each of the Advanced

Placement course offerings an independent exam administered by the College Board is written in

May and is subject to an administration fee. The AP exam is written in May.

OPEN THE DOOR TO OPPORTUNITY!

Although University and College are excellent educational routes to follow, many students require a different option to be able to further their education. The Central Okanagan School District provides “Youth Trades in Training” programs which allow students the opportunity to earn both high school and post-secondary course credits while in high school. These programs generally begin in September or February of their grade 11 or 12 year, depending on the program they wish to pursue. A Youth Trades Training application which is available from the Career Coordinator at your school’s Career Centre must be completed. Program information is also accessible on the Central Okanagan website at: www.sd23.bc.ca/CareerLifePrograms

Youth Work in Trades Apprenticeship – Must be currently working with a Red Seal Trades Person

The Youth Work in Trades program is designed to allow grade 10-12 students to become registered

apprentices with the Industry Training Authority (ITA) while completing BC grad requirements. Benefits are: • Can begin as early as grade 10 or 15 years of age

• Students are registered with an acceptable employer

• Students are paid during the training process and will accumulate hours towards his/her journey person status

• Upon successful completion of 480 creditable hours, students will receive 16 high school course credits

• Level One Technical Training can be provided after successful completion of 500 hours

BCIT – Entry Level Trades Training and Technology programs

Completion of a BCIT Dual Credit program will earn students 32 high school credits and Level One Technical

training for trades. All course work completed is fully transferable to BCIT second year programs as well as

many other post-secondary institutions. Intake dates for any BCIT program is early February (second semester

of grade 12). Available programs are:

• Computer Information Service Technician • Electricity & Industrial Electronics • Heavy Mechanical Trades

Okanagan College - Entry Level Trades Training and Technology programs

Successful completion of an OC Dual Credit program will give a student a total of 32 credits; 16 for high school

and 16 for the Level One Technical Training. Intake dates for an OC program begin February (second semester

of grade 12). For more information; check with the Career Coordinator at your school’s Career Centre.

This program prepares students for a career as a front line health care worker who is responsible for providing

Students can take courses that will give both high school graduation credits and a head start towards

completion of an apprenticeship program. Youth Train in Trades programs are developed and offered as

partnerships between school districts and post-secondary institutions. Once successfully completed (70%)

credit will be granted for at least Level One of the technical training (in-class) component of the industry

training program.

KSS – Auto Service Technician – Level 1

This program exposes the student to all aspects of service and repairs in the automotive trade with a focus on

developing practical skills. It is designed to take students interested in the automotive repair trade and supply

them with the necessary skills to seek employment in this industry as an apprentice automotive service

technician. It is required that students have taken Automotive 11 and 12, as well as being on track to graduate

with a serious interest in the automotive trade.

MBSS - Culinary Arts

This program allows students to spend time in each of the four training kitchens and covers all the basic skills

required including: hygiene, safety and nutrition, hot and cold work, and bakery. The program places emphasis

on practical skills and graduates are in high demand both locally and in major centres. Students will need to

combine classroom work with a worksite placement in order to be granted Professional Cook Level 1.

Apprenticeship practical training credit may also be granted by the employer as a result of prior practical

experience.

MBSS – Firefighting Academy

Students who can make a firm commitment to an exciting and unique program are encouraged to join our

Mount Boucherie / West Kelowna Fire Rescue Fire Fighting 12 Program. The program is an amalgamation of

up to four courses: Fire Fighting 12, Work Experience 12A, Work Experience 12B, and Weights and Fitness

12. The Fire Fighting 12 course is a combination of components of the Justice Institute of British Columbia’s

Basic Fire Fighting certification course and supplementary units from our text: Fundamentals of Fire Fighter

Skills. A St. John Basic First Aid and Adult CPR course is included as well as Live Fire Training. An entrance

interview, physical fitness test, and a commitment to completing the course are required for

acceptance. Exceptional effort and completion of the course have led students directly into the adult Paid

On-Call recruit classes and employment as POC fire fighters with WKFR before secondary school

graduation. FF12 is taken within the timetable; other components occur outside the timetable, including

Thursday evening practices at Hall 32.

MBSS – Hair Dressing

This program is designed for grades 11 and 12 students who have a serious interest in exploring hairdressing

as a viable career choice. Our program is composed of theory and applied skills hairdressing courses and salon

work experience hours. This is in addition to any other academic courses that they will require, by the BC

Ministry of Education, for high school graduation. Students must complete all seven hairdressing courses

consecutively, and complete additional industry training hours through salon jobs and/or work experience

placements, for a total of 1317 industry training hours. The MBS Hairdressing Academy is under the umbrella

of the Industry Training Authority, and the students will have the opportunity to write the ITA theory

Certification of Qualification exam.

RSS - Emergency Medical Responder

Students who are interested in a career in healthcare or emergency services; such as a nurse, paramedic,

firefighter, respiratory therapist or doctor. Specifically, the EMR course is the pre-requisite to continue on

into the Primary Care Paramedic program to work as a paramedic. The EMR course is different than most

courses you have taken. Classroom time will not be spent teaching theory. You will be responsible to do the

reading on your own time. 90% of classroom time will be spent on hands on practice of various medical or

trauma scenarios. You are also required to complete an online course before EMR class starts.

Note: Preference will be given to grade 12 students with a background in Chemistry 11 and/or

Biology 12.

RSS – Forest Resource Field Studies

A comprehensive forestry based program that allows students to gain hands-on field work and theoretical

skills in the forestry industry. Students will also receive training that enables them to qualify for their Level

One – * “Utility Arborist” Certificate. This is a Certified Apprenticeship Program that will allow students to

directly enter the Utility Arborist employment field.

* “Utility Arborist” means a person who undertakes any work required to prune or clear vegetation in proximity

to energized electrical equipment, structures and conductors or who in the course of utility line clearing

operations, prunes, falls, or removes trees which could come into contact with energized power lines.

OVERVIEW As committed and focused athletes, Canadian Sport School

students-athletes are able to bring their physical training

into the school day by participating in our multi-sport

training program with PacificSport coaching specialists.

A dedicated Central Okanagan School District teacher is on

staff at the Canadian Sport School to teach and to assist

students with their academic studies as required. When

finished with training, participants will be transported to

their neighbourhood public school with their existing

teachers, friends and peers for the remainder of their

educational requirements.

ACADEMICS The majority of the BC graduation program required

courses will be delivered through the participant's school of

record. These courses, Language Arts, Math, Social Studies

and Science, will be delivered in the regular classroom

setting with students' peers.

The remainder of their elective courses will be offered by

the Canadian Sport School via distributed learning. Elective

courses include: Human Performance, Athlete Training,

Sports Marketing, High Performance PE, Individual Sports

Training and more.

ATHLETICS Canadian Sport School participants will utilize multi-sport

training sessions intended to increase their motor

development and physical fitness. The program based in

athletics, gymnastics, strength and conditioning, yoga and

more increases participants' exposure to a variety of

activities, techniques and training elements to improve their

overall athleticism.

Students must meet all graduation requirements, totaling 80 credits, over the course of grades 10 to 12.

A full course load in Grade 10 is 32 credits. Some specific courses are required for graduation.

In grade 10 the required courses are:

• An English Studies 10 (4 credits) This will show as 2 credits on your course verifications, but you will receive 4 credits

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS

1. Grade 10 students must write a Ministry mandated Numeracy Assessment & Literacy Assessment

2. Students should consult with their current subject teachers for course recommendations, especially in

mathematics. KSS administration reserves the right to review and modify all course recommendations

in consultation with students and parents.

3. All Grade 10 students must select the equivalent of 8 full blocks (32 credits within the timetable).

After discussing your student’s course selections for next school year and completing the course selections

on the next page, please hand the completed form into your "Home School" (Dr. Knox/KLO Middle). Further

information is available in the Gr.10-12 VIEWBOOK which is available on the home page of the KSS Website:

www.kss.sd23.bc.ca, under "About" then "Courses".

Accurate course selection is most important because the first priority in building next year’s timetable is

meeting the course requests of students. Timetables will be sent home with the June report card. Course

changes must be made prior to July 2nd. There will be NO COURSE CHANGES after this date.

Students must meet all graduation requirements, totaling 80 credits, over the course of grades 10 to 12.

A full course load in Grade 10 is 32 credits. Some specific courses are required for graduation.

In grade 10 French Immersion, the required courses are:

• Français Langue Seconde 10 (4 credits)

• An English Studies 10 (4 credits) This will show as 2 credits on your course verifications, but you will receive 4 credits

• Sciences Humaines 10 (4 credits)

• A Mathematics 10 (4 credits)

• Science 10 (4 credits)

• Physical & Health Education 10 or Dance Fitness or Mixed Martial Arts 10 (4 credits)

• Fine Arts and/or Applied Skills 10 (4 credits in total)

• Career Life Education 10 A (2 credits)

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS

1. Grade 10 students must complete a Ministry mandated Numeracy Assessment & Literacy Assessment.

2. Students should consult with their current subject teachers for course recommendations, especially in

mathematics. KSS administration reserves the right to review and modify all course recommendations

in consultation with students and parents.

3. French Immersion 10 students must take Français Langue Seconde 10 and Sciences Humaines 10.

4. French Immersion 10 students may take Mathématiques 10/Pre-AP and/or Sciences Naturelles 10.

5. Bilingual Dogwood Graduation requires Français Langue Seconde 10, 11 & 12 plus Sciences

Humaines 10 & 11 and at least one more immersion course.

6. All Grade 10 students must select a minimum of 8 full blocks (32 credits within the timetable).

on the next page, please hand the completed form into your "Home School" (Dr. Knox/KLO Middle). Further

Accurate course selection is most important because the first priority in building next year’s timetable is

meeting the course requests of students. Timetables will be sent home with the June report card. Course

changes must be made prior to July 2nd. There will be NO COURSE CHANGES after this date.

A French Immersion "Dogwood" (Bilingual Dogwood) will be granted by the Ministry of

Education to Students completing Sciences Humaines 10, Histoire Mondiale 12, Français 10, 11

& 12, and one additional 4 credit course taught in French.

Speaking French in the classroom at all times is an integral component of the program.

Content: This language course encourages

students to develop their own unique bilingual

identity, while also considering the cultural

diversity they experience by studying authentic

Francophone works. It is through the analysis,

exploration and understanding of a variety of

these sources that the students will be able

communicate effectively and thoughtfully.

Speaking, reading, writing and listening skills will

all be highlighted through various learning

activities. Students will use these abilities to

critically consider the role of personal identity and

cultural appreciation, and how they affect the

world in which we live.

FRENCH IMMERSION LANGUAGE ARTS 11-

Content: This course is designed to encourage

students to discover, explore, analyze and

interpret cinematographic and literary works of

the French-speaking world. Students will explore

their imagination and develop their creativity and

writing style through multiple cinematographic

and literary genres. By studying a variety of texts,

students will acquire knowledge of Francophone

culture, which will contribute to the development

of their own personal identity. They will

understand how the literary and cinematographic

works of a society reflect its principles and values,

and will reflect upon and develop their own set of

values and principles.

FRENCH IMMERSION LANGUAGE ARTS 12

FFRAL12-4S

Content: This course represents the completion

of the French Immersion program at KSS, and

qualifies the student for a bilingual Dogwood

certificate.

This course will promote the comprehension of

the variety of linguistic and cultural differences

seen in the Francophone world. Students will use

analysis, questioning and synthesis to develop a

rich and sophisticated communication style. They

will use nuance and the symbolic to enhance their

writing style. The themes of this year, Friendship,

Belonging and Duty vs Desire, and the literature

chosen for this year, will lead students to

philosophical reflections of how experience and

perception can influence comprehension and

understanding. It is through the critical reflection

of their positions on these themes that students

will form an understanding of their place in the

bilingual world.

FONDEMENTS ET MATHÉMATIQUES PRÉ-

CALCUL 10-AP - FFMFP10-4S

This course is part of the accelerated AP

(advanced placement) math program offered at

KSS and is intended for students with a strong

work ethic and commitment level. This course

covers all the topics of Pre-Calculus Math 11. It is

a challenging course that will develop the skills

necessary for theoretical calculus. Attention will

be given to mastery of both English and French

terminology and opportunities will be provided

to demonstrate mathematical competence in

both languages. It is recommended that

students complete the Math 9 extensions

Content: This course is recommended to Grade

11 French Immersion students to fulfill their

graduation requirements. Students will learn the

knowledge and skills necessary to further their

learning in social studies. HIstoire mondiale 12

traces major developments and events in world

history since the turn of the 20th Century.

Students will explore social, economic, and

political changes, varying world views, and the

role of conflict and cooperation in global

interrelationships. Students will apply historical

knowledge to build curricular competencies, such

as historical significance, perspectives, continuity

and change, cause and consequence, ethical

judgement, and interpreting evidence. This in

turn will help students develop the skills and

attributes necessary to be successful in any upper

level humanities.

PERSPECTIVES MONDIALES 11/12 – YAES-1A-

4S

Prerequisite: Students must be in the French

Immersion Program.

Content: This is a hands-on French Immersion

course that will provide you with a unique option

to use your bilingualism in authentic situations.

With an emphasis placed on oral communication,

in depth inquiries will be conducted about current

social issues connected to human rights. As a

student in this course, this will allow you to

challenge your current views and become more

self-aware by exploring multiple perspectives

locally and internationally. You will make

meaningful connections by mentoring younger

students, volunteering in different organizations,

and developing relationships around the globe.

Overall this course will help you make sense of

your role and responsibility in our globalized

world.

This course may also provide the option of

travelling to a French-speaking country during

the second semester to immerse yourself in a

different culture and actively participate in

international volunteer work. Any volunteer work

accomplished during the course could be put

towards your required volunteer hours.

course. Students will complete the learning

and develop a digital portfolio in a website and

blog.

Content: Students will build their understanding

of past events and trends since the turn of the

20th century. As such, classroom learning will

focus on global and regional conflicts, the

development of political institutions, differing

world views, and historical and contemporary

injustices. Students will apply historical

knowledge to build curricular competencies, such

as historical significance, perspectives, continuity

and change, cause and consequence, ethical

judgement, and interpreting evidence. This in

turn will help students develop better

understanding of the past in order to be

successful in Histoire Mondiale 12.

SCIENCES NATURELLES 10 – FSCF-10-4S

Content: In this course you will learn some of the

skills necessary to become a successful scientist.

You will work independently and in groups on the

development of scientific competencies that

include: questioning and predicting; experiment

planning and conducting; data analysis,

evaluation, and application; and communication

of scientific information. This will be

accomplished through the study of various topics

including; genetics, the Big Bang Theory, energy,

and chemical reactions. This class will help you

develop a sustained curiosity to the world around

you, an ability to assess assumptions and

question given information, and an ability to

apply scientific literacy to social, ethical, and

environmental consideration in the real world.

French Immersion Science 10 enables students to

gain French immersion credits and to speak, read

It is also intended to introduce students to

components of English 12 and to help

prepare students for the rigors of the

Advanced Placement English program.

English Studies 10 is required, along with

teacher approval, for entry into this course.

Content: In English Studies 12, students will

develop a critical approach to literature and

research skills. The course emphasizes critical

experiences through text and build an

understanding of Canadians’ responsibilities

in relation to reconciliation.

Students will gain insight into the diverse

and will provide a strong foundation for

students pursuing academic post-secondary

education. Successful completion of the

program, both required and enrichment

material, may lead students to write the AP

Language and Composition or Literature and

Composition exam which may grant them

advanced placement at various universities

and colleges in North America. A fee is set

for the writing of this exam.

Content: Creative Writing is an artistic

exploration of writing, focusing on

developing each writer’s personal voice.

Through innovative activities students will

challenge themselves to expand their views

on writing. Exploring components from a

wide range of writers such as Dr. Suess, Jane

Austen, Chuck Palahniuk, Truman Capote,

Arlo Guthrie, and Haruki Murakami students

will be introduced to new possibilities.

Working with their peers, students will have

the opportunity not only to share their work,

but also to gain valuable feedback. Students

are expected to be strong writers competent

in the English language (a minimum of a B in

their previous English course is strongly

recommended). NOTE: Creative Writing

does not replace English 12 as a

graduation requirement.

DEBATE & SPEECH 10/11/12

Content: This course is designed for

students with a serious interest in current

social issues, public speaking and law.

Students will learn techniques of both cross-

examination and national style debate, and

formal and impromptu speeches. Research

skills will be taught and practiced. Students

will be expected to speak publicly in various

situations, including debate tournaments.

Attending and participating in at least one

debate tournament is a requirement of the

course. Students will have the opportunity to

compete regionally and provincially. This is a

rigorous course for students with strong

academic backgrounds and interests. Class

will take place Monday afternoon, outside the

regular timetable and is available to any

student in grades 10 - 12 in the district. (Gr. 8

& 9 students who are interested may apply to

the instructor to attend the course, and

compete provincially at a novice level, but will

not receive academic credit.) NOTE: Debate

Content: This course surveys the literary

accomplishments of great English writers

from the Anglo-Saxon age to the modern

age. Literature 12 focuses on the authors and

the works of British literature in their

historical, cultural, and literary contexts,

providing an opportunity for students to

explore the cultural richness of our literary

heritage. English Literature 12 is

recommended for students who intend to

Content: This hybrid course is for students

with a keen interest in current events and

strong time management skills. Students will

contribute to the KSS online newspaper

publication, Censor This!

(www.ksscensorthis.com) and/or the online

magazine, Art of Adventure, dedicated to

broadening students’ geographic horizons.

Students must be willing to write a variety of

genres, take photographs, produce short

videos, manipulate and produce graphics,

learn basic layout techniques, and move

towards mastery in other multi-media tools.

Special focus is placed on Curricular

Competency extensions, including taking

creative risks, asking aesthetic questions,

documenting, digital citizenship, and ethical,

legal and moral considerations. This course

also explores the world of social media (i.e.

FaceBook, YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr,

Instagram etc.), focusing on social justice,

current trends, cutting edge technology,

publishing online, distribution of information

(i.e. marketing), archiving, cyber ethics, and

footprint. A strong emphasis is placed on the

First Nations Principles of Learning, especially

with regard to storytelling. This class is

offered inside the timetable, but a second

class may be offered outside the timetable if

there is sufficient demand. NOTE: Students

who are interested in this second class

need to contact Mr. Derksen directly or be

Prerequisite: Social Studies 10.

Content: BC First Peoples 12 will expose

students to the longstanding connection BC

First Peoples have had with the land in

developing their identity and world view, how

colonialism has impacted and continues to

impact BC First Peoples, that culture is living

and shows the diversity and resilience of BC

First Peoples and how current self

determination is a challenge in Canada’s

ongoing legacy of colonialism. Students will

apply historical knowledge to build such

curricular competences as historical

significance, perspectives, continuity and

change, cause and consequence, ethical

judgement, and interpreting evidence. The

course will help students develop the skills

and attributes necessary to be successful in

upper level humanities.

Comparative Cultures 12 is a survey course

designed to provide an overview of various

cultures through time. Focus will be placed on

gaining understanding of institutions

power and authority, and artwork. Students

years of post-secondary.

GENOCIDE STUDIES 12 – MGENO12-4S

Prerequisite: Have completed one of either

Human Geography 12, World History 12, or

BC First Peoples 12

Content: This course is recommended

following successful completion of World

History or Human Geography 12. Genocide

12 addresses the origins and development of

the term “genocide”, with a focus on the

question: how and why do genocides

happen? Students draw comparisons, analyze

events & issues, and take initiative to

recognize that while genocides are caused

and carried out for different reasons, all share

in progression and scope. Students will build

on the curricular competencies of

significance, continuity and change, cause

and consequence, ethical judgement,

perspective, the inquiry process and

interpreting evidence. The concepts of

historical, critical, and creative thinking,

utilizing individualized communication skills,

and partaking in personal and social

responsibility are foundational to the goal of

fostering learning, and sparking curiosity &

questioning as related to historical and

contemporary genocide. By fostering

empathy, tolerance, and respect, Genocide 12

strives to meet the following, as implored by

a Holocaust survivor's plea: "Reading, writing,

arithmetic are important only if they serve to

make our children more human." This course

will help students develop the skills and

attributes necessary to be successful in the

formative years of post-secondary.

HUMAN GEOGRAPHY 12 AP – AHG--12-4L

(Linear, 8 credits)

Prerequisite: Students in grade 12 who have

completed Human Geography 12.

Content: This course is an

introduction/survey to the “human” aspect of

geography. The purpose of this course is to

look at the patterns and processes that have

shaped human understanding, use, and

alterations to the Earth’s surface. Students

will look at topics such as: population and

cultural trends, city development,

globalization, organizations such as NATO

and NAFTA, and environmental

consequences of human actions. Although

this is not a “mapping” class, students will be

expected to have a basic understanding of

where countries/regions are located around

the world. Emphasis will be placed on

preparing for the Advanced Placement Exam

which will include case studies and learning

the extensive vocabulary.

LAW STUDIES 12 – MLST-12-4S

Prerequisite: Have completed one of either

Human Geography 12, World History 12, or

BC First Peoples 12

Content: This course is recommended

following successful completion of World

History or Human Geography 12. Law

Studies 12 promotes the understanding of

legal rights and responsibilities that allow

citizens to participate more fully in society.

The law is a very powerful organic social

structure that reflects society’s values and

worldviews, and affects many aspects of daily

life. Students will learn to critically examine

the law in society using legal history

(including Indigenous Peoples), statute law,

and case law to build the following curricular

competencies: significance, evidence,

continuity and change, cause and

consequence, perspective, and ethical

judgement. This in turn will help students

develop the skills and attributes necessary to

be successful in any upper level humanities..

PHILOSOPHY 12 – MPHIL12-4S

12 examines the fundamental nature of

knowledge, reality and existence. Examining

questions in philosophy allows students to

question their assumptions and better

understand their own beliefs. Philosophy

provides tools for investigating meaning and

fostering understanding of different ways of

thinking. Students will learn to critically

examine issues with no definitive answers to

build the following curricular competencies:

significance, evidence, continuity and change,

cause and consequence, perspective, and

ethical judgement. This in turn will help

students develop the skills and attributes

necessary to be successful lifelong learners.

PSYCHOLOGY 11 – YPSYC1A-4S

Content: Psychology 11 is an introductory

course in the study of human behavior.

Among topics studied will be human

development, sleep and dreams, personality

development and measurement, principles of

learning, motivation and emotions, hypnosis,

frustration and conflict, and abnormalities

and treatment of antisocial behavior,

psychosis, and neurosis. Throughout the

course, students will learn how an

understanding of human behavior can be

useful in understanding themselves and

those around them.

PSYCHOLOGY 12 – YPSYC2A-4S

Content: Psychology 12 is the second year

of a two-year program. This course continues

with a more in-depth study of modern day

psychology. Topics studied in Psychology 11

are further developed and new topics

introduced. New topics such as sensation

and perception, memory, learning, thinking

and language, psychological therapies, stress

and health psychology, social psychology.

Students interested in pursuing post-

secondary studies leading to careers in areas

such as social work, mediation, criminal

justice, psychology, counselling, or have a

general interest in human behavior will find

Psychology 12 interesting.

PSYCHOLOGY 12 AP - YPSYC2AH4L (Linear)

Content: Psychology 12 AP is intended for

those students who have excelled in

Psychology 11 and who intend to write the

Psychology 12 AP test in May. The AP class

focus is on preparing for the AP exam and will

cover more material in a shorter time than the

Psychology 12 regular class. See also the

The Mathematics program at K.S.S. offers to all students essentially three streams which provide

the options required to satisfy their needs. The chart below shows the path students may follow as

they progress, bearing in mind their individual goals.

1. Foundations & Pre-Calculus Math 10H, Pre-Calculus 11H and Calculus 12AP are

intended for students who have strong ability in mathematics, show good organization

and work habits. On completion of Calculus 12AP, students will also have completed

the requirements of Calculus 12.

2. A graphing calculator is required in Pre-Calculus 11 Honours, Pre-Calculus 12, Calculus

12, and Calculus 12AP. The school will provide graphing calculators for “in class” use

only. Students may wish to purchase a graphing calculator for home use and should

consult their math teacher before purchasing a calculator. Graphing calculator

apps can be used for homework and in class assignments but not during tests.

3. We strongly suggest following your teacher recommendations regarding course

selection as changes are very difficult once student timetables are created.

Content: This course is designed to provide

complete this course will find themselves well

prepared for any first year university calculus

course. Students taking this course must

AP-Prep

Content: This is an advanced, university level

course offered to students who have

completed Pre-Calculus 11 AP-Prep or Pre-

Calculus 12. Topics covered include the

theory of limits, differentiation of functions,

curve sketching and integration. Students will

solve problems using differentiation and

integration: related rates, optimization, area

under a curve and volumes of revolution.

GEOLOGY 12 - MGEOL12-4S

Content: In this course you will learn some of the

skills necessary to become a successful scientist.

You will work independently and in groups on the

development of scientific competencies that

include: questioning and predicting; planning

and conducting; processing and analyzing data

and information; evaluating, applying and

innovating; and communicating. The Earth is a big

and ancient place, why not understand as much

about it as possible! Geology 12 will take you

from the earliest years of our planet to millions of

years in the future. In between, this fascinating

course looks at the importance of minerals and

other resources from a scientific and economic

perspective. Volcanoes erupt, earthquakes

rumble, all from the comfort of your classroom

as we study plate tectonics. Embark upon both

virtual and real geology field trips. Walk in the

footsteps of dinosaurs to see how they lived and

died. Learn more about the processes that

shape, create and destroy the surface of the

planet we call home. Buckle up, it's going to be a

"rocky" ride. This class will help you develop a

sustained curiosity to the world around you, an

ability to assess assumptions and question given

information, and an ability to apply scientific

literacy to social, ethical, and environmental

consideration in the real world.

HEALTH SCIENCE 12 – YHRA-2B-4S

Health Science 12 is the perfect course for

students who may have an interest in pursuing a

career in health sciences/health care. The intent

of the course is to present students with

opportunities and information that will help

facilitate their transition to post-secondary health

science programs. Students will explore the

following topics: Health Care Careers, Nutrition

and Personal Wellness, Anatomy and Physiology

of the Human Body, Injury/Rehab and Prevention,

Health Disorders and Diseases. During this

exploration, students will work on developing

their communication/presentation skills, practice

their critical and creative thinking, they will also

assess their own personal health and wellness and

identify their personal and cultural identity. As

there are limited seats for this program, students

will be required to complete a Health Sc. 12

Questionnaire to ensure that students with the

strongest interest and regular attendance are

given priority for that seat in the program. If this

PHYSICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE 12

YPLS-2C-4S

Prerequisite: Chemistry 11, Pre-Calculus Math 11

This course is intended for those students with an

interest in science and a desire to pursue science

at the post-secondary level. The focus of this

course is the completion of a series of laboratory

investigations based upon first year university

chemistry labs. As the students who might take

this class are most likely already enrolled in an

intensive course of study, the intention is to have

all labs and write-ups completed during class

time (as is the case in many universities).

Over the course of this class, the student will

acquire basic laboratory skills and learn

techniques which will be required in

university/college courses. They will also,

through the hands-on nature of experimental

science, reinforce their pre-existing knowledge

and expand upon it. Students should also gain a

better understanding of the role of the science

lab in real world applications, such as water

quality analysis, assaying, and organic chemistry

processes. Laboratory work has also been

demonstrated to increase student enjoyment and

appreciation of the sciences. All of these factors

Recommended Prerequisite: Successful

standing in Science 10 and Foundations & Pre-

Calculus Math 10 is necessary, C+ or better is

preferred.

extension of Science 10 Honours though

course is recommended for students with a high

B or A average in Science 9.

Content: In this course you will learn some of the

skills necessary to become a successful scientist.

You will work independently and in groups on the

development of scientific competencies that

include: questioning and predicting; experiment

planning and conducting; data analysis,

evaluation, and application; and communication

of scientific information. This will be

accomplished through the study of various topics

including; genetics, the Big Bang Theory, energy,

and chemical reactions. Additionally, this class

will cover Chemistry 11 topics including the mole

and stoichiometry as well as Physics 11 topics

requiring geometry skills. This class will help you

develop a sustained curiosity to the world around

you, an ability to assess assumptions and

question given information, and an ability to

apply scientific literacy to social, ethical, and

environmental consideration in the real world.

SCIENCE FOR CITIZENS 11 - MSCT-11-4S

Content: The big ideas to be explored in this

course include; how science informs decisions in

our daily lives, the everyday uses of science, the

safety implications of science in the workplace,

and how human choices affect global systems.

Through the study of these overarching themes,

students will develop their ability to; question and

SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING 11 – MENR-11-4S

A project based course designed for those

considering pursuing studies in engineering.

Projects will focus on sub-disciplines such as 3-D

printing heart valves (biomed), Water quality and

treatment (enviro), construction materials (civil).

Student presentations and participation will be

expected. Numerous field trips to UBCO will be

mandatory. Completion of Math 10

Foundations/pre-calc is essential, Physics and or

Chem 11 recommended. SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING 12 – MENR-12-4S

Students desiring further development of skills

from Engineering 11 are eligible to enroll. The

class will be project based using the FESTO

Mechanical Engineering platform using

mechanical engineering, electrical engineering

and coding. A national exam is available for

those students seeking to write, a successful

score will allow international certification in the

use of FESTO equipment for engineering and

education. Math and Physics at the grade 11

level along with Sustainable Engineering 11 is

essential.

This class does not satisfy grad requirements

for a grade 11 science. It does count as an

Applied Skill Credit.

American Sign Language is a visual language

with individual and members of the Deaf

community who use ASL as their first

Content: This course expands students' skills

of communicating in German, emphasizing

written comprehension oral communication

grammar as well as culture are studied.

Students will increase their range of

commonly used vocabulary and sentence

students will continue to develop the German

GERMAN 12 – MGE--12-4S

Content: This course offers a more intense

study of German grammar and usage. This

course expands students' communication

skills, emphasizing written comprehension,

oral communication and grammar. Students

will express opinions with different degrees

of likes and dislikes, use past and present

timeframes, and learn idiomatic expressions.

Students will engage in oral expression using

common elements of story and idiomatic

expression. Culture will also be apparent in

classroom activities.

JAPANESE 10 – MJA--10-4S

Content: Hooray, you've found it! Arguably

the best, most interesting, most dynamic

second language choice of them all. Utilizing

a refreshingly active, interactive, hands-on

approach, and taking advantage of sister

school relationships with schools in Japan,

this beginning level course will take you

through the basics you'll need to become

functionally fluent in such tasks as

exchanging personal information, reading

and writing in the two phonetic alphabets,

and understanding the various customs that

govern life in Japan. Despite what you may

think Japanese is a relatively simple language,

having very easy pronunciation, simple

grammatical rules that it actually obeys

(unlike English … eek!), and an alphabet that

always sounds exactly the way it's written.

Hand in hand with language student will learn

about such cultural elements as manga,

anime, modern trends, J Pop, ancient

traditional arts, Japanese cooking, and so

much more. We also offer an 11 day school

trip to Japan every second year open to all

students in the program.

JAPANESE 11 – MJA--11-4S

Content: In this intermediate level course

students will gain further functional fluency in

areas such as asking and giving map

directions, shopping, ordering at restaurants,

and saying where various things are located.

Students will enhance their strength in

reading and writing by including a growing

number of kanji (Chinese ideographic

characters). As with the first year course, we

will continue to utilize our connection with

Japanese sister schools to foster even deeper

friendships and connections across the

Pacific.

Content: In this upper-intermediate level

course students will further broaden their

functional fluencies, concentrating on topics

like asking permission, relating past

experience, making plans, riding various

forms of transportation and many more. We

will deepen our facility with the kanji writing

system, and will continue to broaden our

interaction with Japanese friends both at

home and overseas.

SPANISH 10 – MSP--10-4S

Content: In this course, you will learn the

beginning language skills necessary to

become a successful Spanish speaker. You

will have the opportunity to engage in

various types of activities: listening, reading,

writing and speaking in Spanish. In addition,

you will develop an understanding of the

cultural context within the language.

to function in real life experiences in a

Hispanic country.

DESCRIPTION OF COURSES

ART STUDIO 10 – MVAST10-2T (10 weeks)

Content: This is an introductory art foundations

course which covers the Elements and Principles

of Design. This course is for students that are

interested in improving drawing skills, as well as

exploring painting and printmaking. Special focus

is placed on Core Competency extensions,

including communication with their artwork,

generating and developing ideas, as well as

analyzing and critiquing their artwork. A strong

emphasis is placed on the First Nations Principles

of Learning, especially with regard to storytelling.

ART 11 – MVAST11-4S

Content: This is a follow up to Art Studio 10,

although Art 10 is not a mandatory prerequisite.

Students will build upon their foundational skills

in drawing, design, printmaking, painting and

sculpture. Special focus is placed on Core

Competency extension, including taking creative

risks, asking aesthetic questions and

communicating through their artwork. A strong

emphasis is placed on the First Nations Principles

of Learning, especially with regard to storytelling.

ACCOUNTING 11 – MAC--11-4S

Content: How do businesses keep track of their

financial records? Are businesses operating at a

loss or profit? How are businesses creating

revenue? What are the expenses needed to

generate income? Students will generate and

maintain accurate financial records using

generally acceptable accounting principles.

Using the curricular competencies, students will

determine the financial position of a business;

prove the mathematical accuracy of the

accounting equation by creating a balance sheet;

analyze transactions to determine which accounts

are changed and whether the changes are

recorded as debits or credits; prepare a trial

balance to determine accuracy; create accurate

financial statements using a variety of software

applications; prepare adjustments and closing

entries. By course end, students will be able to

complete the accounting cycle for a service firm.

This course is highly useful for students

considering creating their own business or

working in a business environment.

ACCOUNTING 12 – MACC-12-4S

Prerequisite: Accounting 11

Content: This is a practical hands-on accounting

course building on the knowledge students have

attained through Accounting 11. Curricular

competencies include demonstrating skills

necessary to complete the tasks of the accounts

payable clerk, the accounts receivable clerk and

the accounting supervisor. Students will identify

transactions that are recorded in each of the

special journals in a five-journal system. They will

explain the purpose and importance of the

internal control system of a business; prepare a

daily cash proof; establish and maintain a petty

cash fund; prepare a bank reconciliation and

complete and prove the accuracy of a payroll

journal. Using Sage, students will set up a brand

new business and analyze transactions to

generate financial statements. Students

completing Accounting 12 with a 76% or higher

final grade can earn Okanagan College credit for

BUAD 111 (Introductory Accounting).

income required to qualify for a mortgage;

Content: Economics 12 is an interesting course

that combines learning about the financial world,

with learning about human behavior within the

financial world. During this course, we will

examine topics as varied as why snowboarding

gear is cheapest in the off-season, what money is

and how do banks work, and why so much of

what we buy in Kelowna is manufactured

somewhere else. Students will also learn about

money, wealth, and investing. Economics 12 is

now recognized by most BC universities as being

an 'academic grade 12' class, and its grade can be

used in the calculation of student GPA for

university application. Economics 12 would be

invaluable to any student, especially those

interested in a career in business.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 12 – MENT-12-4S

Content: This course encourages students to

gain a practical understanding of what is required

in the successful start of a small business.

Students will apply skills learned in the creation

and operation of several small business initiatives,

including the development of a business plan, the

design and creation of an invention, and

competition in the school district’s Young

Entrepreneur’s Competition. This exciting course

would be of benefit to those students considering

self-employment as a career option and is highly

beneficial to students considering a career in

business and/or planning to study business.

Content: In this course you will learn the skills

necessary to become a successful animator. You

will work independently and in groups to design

and animate numerous animations based on

storylines that you create. You will learn to utilize

the tools available in Adobe Animate to design,

create and animate characters as well as develop

your drawing skills to improve the quality and

variety of your work. You will also learn how to

use animations as a platform for communicating

stories and emotions to your audience, using the

skills that you have learned to become a capable,

innovative and creative animator.

Content: In Animation 11, students will develop

their manual drawing skills to create richly

detailed characters. This will include instruction in

gesture and contour practice. Using these

characters, students will create long form

animations. Students will have access to digital

drawing tablets and current animating software

that is standard in the industry. The course will

focus on helping students develop a portfolio of

work that demonstrates the skills that they have

learned.

Content: In Animation 12 students will further

develop their manual drawing skills to develop a

richly detailed portfolio. Students will work on

collaborative and individual works throughout

the course utilizing the Harmony animation

program. All of the work that is produced will go

towards fleshing out a varied and diverse

portfolio of work and will culminate in a demo

reel. The goal of this course is to enable students

to develop the skills to become a capable,

VIDEO GAME DEVELOPMENT 11 –YIA-1C-4S

Content: This course has been developed in

conjunction with Digipen University from

Redmond Washington to introduce the student

to modern video game development. This course

provides a foundation in the tools, techniques

and production methods for creating and

successfully using Zero engine in a production

environment. Students will look at the

fundamentals of writing code and how it directly

relates to video games. Specifically students will

develop top down shooter, a platformer (side-

scroller) and then have an opportunity to work on

their own or in a development team on a final

game of their choice.

VIDEO GAME DEVELOPMENT 12 – YIA-2C-4S

Content: This course is an extension of Video

Game Development 11 in which students further

develop proficiency in all technical areas.

Students will complete significantly more

sophisticated projects, generally of a higher level

Content: In this course, students will learn the

skills necessary to become competent in the

kitchen. Students will work with a partner to

prepare delicious main courses, desserts and

during the 10 week course include meal design

opportunities, elements of meal preparation,

causes and consequences of food contamination

outbreaks, First Peoples food protocols, and food

trends, including nutrition, marketing, and food

systems. Learning to cook is a life skill that helps

Content: In Foods 11, students will work with a

partner to prepare main course dishes,

international foods, and bake breads and

Content: In this course you will learn to become

a competent sewer. Students will learn the skills

needed to complete a number of projects (time

allowing) such as a sweatshirt and pajama pants.

They will also be introduced into using their

creative side in the designing of fashion.

Students will be given the tools to learn to

organize and manage their time effectively and

the role of historical and economic factors in the

production of textiles and fashion will also be

discussed. Learning the basics of clothing

construction is a life skill that would benefit

individuals in their daily lives and also if pursuing

a career in the clothing industry.

Content: In this course students continue to

develop sewing skills and learn new techniques.

You will learn strategies for modifying patterns

and techniques for repurposing textile items

using recycled garments to create new designs.

They will learn to fit clothes to their specific figure

type and choose their own patterns to

complement their present wardrobe. The history

of costume and the fashion industry will also be

studied. Projects will be the individual's choice

depending on their sewing experience. Students

techniques will be used to create more fitted

participate in activities including designing,

necessary to create various textile arts and crafts.

Student will also use recycled goods in various

projects and learn the basic principles and

elements of design. You will be introduced to a

number of different types of equipment and

supplies necessary for project completion. The

role of historical and economic factors in the

production of textile arts and crafts will also be

discussed. Students will learn a life skill that will

storyboards, shot lists), production (acting and

hosting, camera, sound and lighting operation,

location management), and post-production

(editing and distribution). Students will be

expected to work collaboratively as members of a

team in a variety of roles while developing

professional standards and attitudes to their

Content: You will begin this course with a study

of the basics of design, computer typesetting, and

image generation. You will study logo design,

generate business cards and letterheads, posters

and package design. You will learn to use

Photoshop and InDesign. You will be introduced

to screen printing. (Students will be required to

pay for materials for projects they opt to do

beyond the basic course requirements.)

Content: This is an advanced course in design,

screen-printing and computer drawing skills,

along with commercial art skills. Students will cut

eps designs on the sign cutter. Students will also

be introduced to beginning Interior Design

concepts.

INTRO TO LAYOUT & DESIGN 10 – MVAM-10-

Content: This class is designed to give grade 10’s

an introduction to the tools and terminology

involved in layout and design. This includes

project work and skills using Adobe Indesign as

well as various techniques using Adobe

Photoshop. You will develop the knowledge to

create and critique various layouts, and the

understanding how an audience will interpret

them. You will also begin to connect typology to

graphic expression. This is a course that will give

you a sample of the work done in Graphic Design

11/12, Yearbook, and Photography and careers

associated with those classes. No previous

experience is necessary to take this class.

MEDIA ARTS 10 – MMEDD10-2T (10 week)

Content: This is a hands-on introductory

production course for students interested in

digital, electronic and paper-based media.

Students will explore activities relating to video

production and graphic art and design. Some

projects involve group work and students will be

expected to function as a reliable group member.

Special focus is placed on Curricular

Competency extensions, including taking

creative risks, asking aesthetic questions,

documenting, digital citizenship, and ethical,

legal and moral considerations. A strong

emphasis is placed on the First Nationals

Principles of Learning, especially with regard to

PHOTOGRAPHY 12 – MVAPH12-4S

Content: This course is for those who want an in-

depth class in photography. Students will do

work in photocomposition; will study light,

including natural light, flash, and studio lighting;

and will work with various lenses and filters. Time

will be devoted to photographing scenery,

working in portraiture, and photographing still

life. Students will work with B&W film and

advanced darkroom techniques, then progress to

work with digital images from digital cameras, or

by scanning of negs and prints, and then

manipulating these images in Photoshop. Time

will be devoted to building a portfolio, and

presenting images for display. This course is

recommended for students enrolled in Art AP.

Students must have their own 35 mm reflex

camera with an ability to adjust shutter speeds

and lens openings. All photo supplies required to

complete the course are supplied, but students

who want to access enrichment projects beyond

the basic course requirements may purchase

additional materials from the instructor. NOTE:

Students wishing to take this course are asked

to meet with Ms. Nicol prior to the beginning

of the course to discuss equipment

requirements.

VIDEO PRODUCTION 11 – MVAMT11-4S

Content: This is a hands-on technical course

Content: This is a follow-up course to Video

Production 11. In addition to the pre-production,

production, and post-production skills already

covered, students will have a chance to hone their

creative skills through more complex shoots and

a deeper exploration of production techniques.

Competency extensions, including taking

creative risks, asking aesthetic questions,

documenting, digital citizenship, and ethical,

legal and moral considerations. Students will be

exposed to a more complex industry model which

includes batch capture, custom audio and

animation (After Effects), and reliance on others

for certain elements of the production process

(allowing for students to specialize in certain

components of production). Students will be

expected to work collaboratively as members of a

team in a variety of roles while developing

professional standards and attitudes to their

work. There is also the opportunity for

independent projects based on a student's

individual interests, including sound engineering

Content: This class designs and produces the

school yearbook. In this course, students will learn

how a book is published, and will be responsible

for all writing, design and photography that will

appear in the book. In order to do this, students

will learn in-depth skills in InDesign (page layout

software) and Photoshop (photo manipulation

software). Skills learned in this course are

transferable into real life careers such as

Photojournalism and Graphic Design. As well,

students will learn the business skills required to

fund a book through sales to students. Students

will be required to work outside of class time

(approx.3 hours per month at noon or after

school) to photograph events and sell and

distribute books. It is not a requirement to take

the course each year to join in the next

year. Students must be reliable with a strong

work ethic, and be able to work with a team. There

is great reward in creating a published book that

tells the story of your school's year.

interested in setting up and running a

Professional Sound System. Students will also

32-track soundboard. Students are expected to

operate sound systems at various live events at

including the possibility of working in a

professional theatre. As time allows, students will

also learn the basics of Digital Audio Recording

awareness of the need for environmental

DESCRIPTION OF COURSES

APPLIED TECHNOLOGY

JEWELRY/ART METAL 10 – YIA-0B-2T

(10 week)

Content: In this course students will become

competent in the shop environment. We will

introduce basic jewelry making techniques.

Students engage in a series of projects that carry

them through the safe operation of commonly

used hand tools and power tools (ie. drill press,

oxy-acetylene torch). Students will enjoy a

positive and inclusive atmosphere while using

new skills to create artistic artifacts out of metal.

Projects include a pair of earrings and a sterling

silver ring. The shop environment can be busy

so students will exercise their social awareness

and responsibility. Skills learned transfer directly

to projects in the home and workplace.

JEWELRY ART/METAL 12 – MTAMJ12-4S

Content: Jewelry Art Metal 12 is an extension of

Jewelry Art Metal 10, however it is not a

prerequisite. Students will first complete a unit

on the CNC (Computerized) mill to machine a

project of their design choice, whether it be

earrings, pendants or brooches. Students will

then explore several specialized welding

techniques to join decorative metals in order to

create jewelry stands, candle scones, sculptures

an wall art. Students will continue with a glass

unit which includes stained glass, glass fusing and

wire wrapped jewelry. The last quarter of the

course allows students to explore a metal art

specialty of their choice to create a self-designed

project. Also, students will be given the

opportunity to create projects that were not

completed in Jewelry Art Metal 10.

METAL 10 – MTMET10-2T (10 week)

Content: This course introduces basic

metalworking processes which allow students to

become competent in the shop environment. We

will start with hand tools and gradually move

students onto machinery. Skills include Lathe

work, Oxy-Acetylene welding, Stick welding and

band saw cutting. Students will foster skill

development by modifying and customizing a set

of prescribed projects. Projects include:

balancing man, decorative log, scriber and a die.

Students will communicate ideas through

drawings and sketches followed by careful

analysis prior to manufacture. We provide a

positive and supportive environment for entry

level learners. Metal 10 provides a solid

foundation of experiences that helps prepare

students to make an informed career choice.

METAL 11 – MTMET11-4S

Content: This course further introduces students

to basic hand tools and power equipment.

Students then learn a variety of welding skills

including gas, wire feed, and stick welding

applications. Students will also explore various

types of sheet metal and machining practices to

make several creative projects. After the

completion of assigned projects that build up

student skill and shop awareness, students are

able to design and construct a personal project to

complete as a final assignment.

METAL 12 – MTMET12-4S

Content: Metal 12 is an extension of Metal 11

however, it is not a prerequisite. Students will

review welding and cutting such as gas, wire feed,

and stick welding applications with the addition

of TIG welding. Students will then complete a unit

to build their machining and precision

measurement skills using the lathe and the CNC

Milling machine. After an assigned project,

students will design, orthographically draw, plan,

and budget to construct a project of their own

choice. A unit on exploring trade careers,

specifically in the metal fabrication industry, will

be introduced with the incorporation of field trips,

guest speakers, and a research project.

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY

POWER TECHNOLOGY 10 - MTPOW10-2T

(10 week)

Content: In this course you will learn the skills

necessary to become competent at engine repair.

You will study in depth the construction and

theory of both two and four stroke internal

combustion engines. You will further understand

how they work by rebuilding a four-stroke

overhead valve engine. You will learn the safe and

proper use of various specialty tools used during

maintenance and rebuild which will provide you

with the skills to become a capable small engine

service technician.

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY 11 – MTAUT11-4S

Content: This course begins with the focus on

shop safety, shop tool use, basic hand tools and

basic automotive systems. We focus on

automotive structures, suspension, brake

systems, cooling systems and engine support

systems. The course transitions into automotive

engine types with focus on the piston engine.

Students will learn about engine parts, four stroke

cycle theory, engine disassembly, assessment,

measurement and reassembly. Both theoretical

learning and hands on learning components are

included. This course is designed for the

beginning automotive enthusiast and provides an

excellent transition to Automotive 12 and the

Dual Credit Auto Service Tech Level One Training

program. First Peoples' Principles of Learning are

integrated throughout the course. Core

competencies include critical thinking skills,

communication, and personal and social aspects

of the automotive culture and trade.

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY 12 – MTAUT12-4S

Content: This course begins with the focus on

shop safety, shop tool use, and advanced

automotive structures. The course focus is on the

application of hands on skills and knowledge to

various basic automotive repairs including

suspension diagnosis, repair, wheel alignment,

and electrical components. Students are

encouraged to take on a variety of automotive

repairs on their own vehicles as aligned with their

skill level. The course transitions into fuel injection

theory, the practical use of an automotive scan

tool, and basic fuel injection diagnosis. A

foundational electronics component is included

with the focus on a mix of hands on learning and

basic electronics theory. This course is designed

for the automotive enthusiast or students

continuing onto mechanical trades or the Auto

Service technician Level One Dual Credit Course.

Automotive 11, or a high level of previous

experience is highly recommended as a

prerequisite to ensure success in the course. First

Peoples' Principles of Learning are integrated

throughout the course. Core competencies

include critical thinking skills, communication,

and personal and social aspects of the

automotive culture and trade.

ACEIT – AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE TECH

(AST) – LEVEL 1

ACEIT is a dual credit program that allows

students to earn credits for 4 blocks, (16 credits

total) of Automotive 12. It also gives students

apprenticeship qualifications for the Level 1

Automotive Service Tech Schooling, (the same

credit as the six-week AST course first year

apprentices take.) Students must maintain 70

percent in the course, and pass the Ministry AST

Level 1 Test with 70 percent to earn Ministry

trades credits. Students are considered first year

apprentices, ready to start their first year

apprenticeship when they leave KSS. Students

must be in a position to graduate to qualify for

the course.

Students interested in the course must be serious

about a career in the automotive trade, and have

previous mechanical experience. It is highly

recommended that students have taken

Automotive 10 or Powertech 10, and Automotive

11. Experience outside of school is

recommended, and will be considered. Students

must have a true passion for the trade. The

course includes a 40-hour work experience

section. A good attendance record and

commitment to learning is essential to be

successful in this course.

If you are on a trades track and want to get an

early start, this is the program for you. It is

challenging, fun, and a great way to get a head

start on your career.

As this course is taught on one complete day,

students can only select 4 other courses.

COMPUTER DRAFTING TECHNOLOGY

DRAFTING 10 – MTDRF10-2T (10 week)

Content: In this course you will learn the skills

necessary to become a successful introductory

draftsperson. As a team, we will explore the

design process, how design has influenced our

past and how it shapes our future. In order to

develop our basic skills, knowledge, a strong

appreciation and connection to drafting and

design, we will first practice hand drafting. We will

then further our skills by learning advanced CAD

software's which have been an integral

component of shaping design, manufacturing

and engineering to today's current standards. We

will focus on three main fields of drafting:

Mechanical, Architectural and Computer

Machining. The main goal of this course is to not

only build strong drafting, interpersonal and life

respect towards how design, drafting and

manufacturing influences our lives on a daily

basis.

DRAFTING & DESIGN 11 – MTDRF11-4S

Includes CNC module.

Content: In this course you will learn the skills

necessary to become a successful intermediate

draftsperson. This course is a project based

course using three of the latest industry CAD

software: AutoCAD, Inventor and Revit. Before

and after each unit, a skill inventory, a self-

assessment and a reflection is completed to

ensure curricular and core competencies are

being met. First, 2D isometric and orthographic

Mechanical drafting is covered using AutoCAD.

Students then use Autodesk Inventor to create

several three-dimensional drawings and

assembly models. Use of the 3D printer will be

included for mechanical drafting prototyping.

The second section of the course is divided into

Architectural drafting where students will use a

3D architectural modeling software, REVIT, to

design and draw a set of house plans. The final

section of this course is related to CNC

(Computerized) machining where students use

tool-pathing software along with the CNC router,

to draw, create a tool path and machine a project

of their design.

DRAFTING & DESIGN 12 – MTDRF12-4S

Includes new CNC module.

Prerequisites: Drafting & Design 11

Content: In this course you will learn the skills

necessary to become a successful advanced

draftsperson. This is a more in-depth drafting

course designed to build and expand on Drafting

& Design 11. All aspects of Drafting and Design

11 will be considered foundational, and students

will now specialize in either

engineering/mechanical drafting, or go the

Architectural route. Before and after each unit, a

skill inventory, a self-assessment and a reflection

is completed to ensure curricular and core

competencies are being met. As a team, students

will use AutoCAD and Inventor software to design

and develop more complex projects. Additionally,

students will not only create home blue prints

using AutoCAD, but they will create a 3D model

of their design using REVIT software. The final

section of this course is related to CNC

(Computerized) machining where students use

tool-pathing software along with the CNC router,

to draw, create a tool path and machine a project

of their design. If students created a CNC project

in their previous year of drafting, students will be

encouraged to create a project using 3D

modelling or laser engraving. In senior drafting,

there is a large focus on continuing education and

careers that incorporate drafting and design.

SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS 11 –

MENR-11-4S

Recommended to Have Completed: Drafting &

Design 11

Content: This course is designed to introduce

students to the engineering profession and the

roles of professional engineers. Techniques in

problem identification, solutions, prototyping,

evaluation of results will be explored. Guest

speakers from the UBCO Faculty of Engineering

will work with students in biomedical

engineering, environmental engineering and

engineering ethics. Student should have a strong

academic background and work ethic though

project work in class will be the large emphasis of

the course.

This class does not satisfy grad requirements

for a grade 11 science. It does count as an

Applied Skill Credit.

INDUSTRIAL ARTS & DESIGN

ROBOTICS/ELECTRONICS TECHNLOLOGY

ELECTRONICS 10 – MTEAR10-2T

Content: In this course you will learn the skills

necessary to become a successful electrical

technician. You will work with other students to

critically think through schematic diagrams and

design problems. You will build the circuitry for

these problems on breadboards and collect

measurement data using test equipment. You will

learn basic series/parallel theory, proper use of

tools/test equipment, trouble shooting

procedures, and soldering techniques while

constructing these electronic projects.

ELECTRONICS & ROBOTICS 11 – MTELE11-4S

Content: In this course you will learn the skills

necessary to become competent in electrical and

mechanical engineering. You will be generating

ideas and design possibilities for a variety of

projects that are chosen according to your

interest or ability. Computer software will be used

to develop both the printed circuit boards and

case enclosures. Schematics, breadboarding,

soldering, digital circuits, semiconductors, robot

minicontrollers, sensory systems and proper use

of testing equipment will be explored. You will

also learn the strategies for isolating problems

and how to implement solutions during circuit

construction or robot design challenges. These

skills will help you manufacture creative and

innovative projects and become a capable

engineer or programmer.

ELECTRONICS & ROBOTICS 12 – MTELE12-4S

Prerequisite: Physics 11 or Electronics/Robotics

10/11 Content: In this course you will learn the skills

necessary to become a successful electrical or

mechanical engineer. You will analyze AC and DC

circuits, electromagnetic induction, analog

systems, advanced digital logic gates,

microcontrollers and sensory systems. You will

learn how electricians read residential wiring

diagrams and electronic schematic diagrams so

that you can build a variety of projects that are

chosen according to your interest or ability. You

will build both autonomous and user-controlled

robots using multiple sensors and wireless

communication to provide input and control to

the robot. The robots you design, construct and

program are often tested at a regional or

provincial level such as the FIRST Robotoics

League. Combining the excitement of sport with

the rigors of science and technology, you learn

about robot designs, construction, programming,

and troubleshooting using logic-based

programming. Using these skills will help you

become a well-rounded, innovative and creative

electrical or mechanical engineer.

ROBOTICS 10 – YIA—0D-2T (10 week)

Content: In this course you will learn the skills

necessary to become a successful mechanical

engineer and computer programmer. You will

design, build, and test behavior-based robots to

accomplish specific tasks. You will be given many

opportunities to work both individually and in

partnership with a team of students that will

design a robot that is programmed to compete in

various competitions and design challenges. You

will learn the sequences to building a functional

robot and flow charting related to robot behavior.

We will focus on various programming platforms

used in robotics, both block-based coding and

logic-based programming. Using the skills will

help you become a well-rounded, collaborative

and capable programmer or mechanical

engineer.

WOODWORK TECHNOLOGY

WOODWORK 10 – MWWK-10-2T (10 week)

Content: In this course you will learn the skills

necessary to become a successful woodworker

with a focus on furniture joinery. Though you will

be making your own project, you will work

alongside your peers learning the importance of

shop safety, proper tool/machine use and joinery.

We will explore the importance of careful

measurement, project planning and design with

reference to the ethical use of wood species,

finishing materials and material recycling. The

main goal of this course is to not only build strong

woodworking, interpersonal and life skills, but to

foster a deep understanding and respect towards

how design and manufacturing influences our

lives on a daily basis.

WOODWORK 11 – MWWK-11-4S

Prerequisite: Gr. 10 Woodwork

Content: The primary focus of Wood 11 is

comprehensive coverage of sound, fundamental

woodworking practices, with an emphasis on

safety throughout. This should be considered an

intermediate level course, laying a solid

foundation for the grade 12 year. Before and after

each unit, a skill inventory, a self-assessment and

a reflection is completed to ensure curricular and

core competencies are being met. Students learn

how to draw, read and interpret drawings of their

selected project. Students will consider and

choose appropriate wood and materials, calculate

a bill of materials and create a procedural cut list.

Furniture, cabinet design and construction form

the core of this course. A wide variety of tools and

machinery are used in the design and completion

of student projects. An introduction to CNC

machining and Laser Engraving form part of this

course.

Prerequisite: Gr.10 Woodwork or Gr.11

Woodwork

Content: This course is a continuation of

Woodwork 11, but with some advanced millwork,

joinery, laminating and mass production

components added. Before and after each unit, a

skill inventory, a self-assessment and a reflection

is completed to ensure curricular and core

competencies are being met. Furniture, cabinet

design and construction forms the major parts of

this course. The same power and hand tools are

used, but in more complex applications. A small

introductory project introducing students to basic

carpentry is also covered. Exposure to and

research of several woodwork related career

opportunities and post-secondary trades schools

will be investigated. An intermediate CNC routing

and laser engraving module forms part of this

course.

PSI Entrance Requirements WHAT ARE THE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR POST SECONDARY INSTITUTIONS?

Every post-secondary institution (PSI) creates its own entrance requirements. A PSI includes any

schooling after secondary school – colleges, technical schools, universities, etc. What a student needs

for admission at UBC Okanagan is not the same as at UBC Vancouver, Okanagan College or the

University of Alberta. Typically there are entrance requirements for the school in general and then

there are specific entrance requirements for each faculty or program and students must meet all of

them to apply. Most PSI’s look only at grade 12 marks for entrance, but that is not consistently the

case. Students need to research the entrance requirements for any PSI that they might be interested

in attending after high school and then ensure that they are taking the appropriate courses.

UBC/UBCO are now looking at grade 11 marks for entrance if the approved grade 12 course has not

been completed by February of the student's graduation year. For details, see tab marked

"UBC/UBCO Admissions Changes"

Entrance Requirements to BC Universities There are no generic requirements that can be stated to ensure a student is eligible for university

entrance. Each university has differing general requirements for entrance and then within each

faculty there are additional entrance requirements that must be met. The only common course is

English 12. Students, therefore, must consult the university’s website or calendar to investigate

what courses are needed.

Many times university entrance requirements refer to “Approved Academic Grade 12 Courses” that are

accepted at the institution for entrance. The list varies from university to university so YOU MUST REFER TO INDIVIDUAL POST SECONDARY INSTITUTION WEBSITES to ensure you are taking the appropriate courses that

will allow you to apply to that particular university.
