Our Mass book has openings

schedule your Mass.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

From the time we are born into this world until we die, our human radar picks up signals about how to respond to life. What we

picked up on when we were very young carries an even greater power. The messages we receive and process tell us what we are

“supposed” to do with our feelings, how to understand and cope with disappointment, anxiety, failure, death, illness, and what to

expect out of life. As life unfolds for us, these radar messages kick in and resonate in us at very deep levels. Sometimes what we

have learned is helpful and sometimes it is not. The stories we have been told, especially when we are young, about how life is best

lived and how to negotiate its pain carry a heavy weight.

Life can be challenging and frightening. Sometimes, it really hurts to be a human being. It also can be quite unpredictable and, at

times, unfair. We face our vulnerability and brokenness of all kinds: physical, emotional, and spiritual. It doesn’t take much for life

to quickly fall apart. What we knew to be familiar and true is gone and something we relied upon, physically, emotionally, or spiritu-

ally, can be taken away. It is hard to confront our limitations and sit with our incompleteness. Often, life hurts us so much that we

find ourselves sitting in a pool of sadness, not sure what we are supposed to do. It is particularly hard when the signals we have

inherited tell us that we need to be successful in what we do, and we have to avoid life’s unfairness. We can feel like a failure, won-

dering what precisely we did to deserve this fate, or ruminate about what we did not do correctly. But it’s really not about us. We are

part of a bigger picture and a much more fascinating story!

If we cease doing battle with life’s incompleteness and see ourselves, as God does, on a journey toward wholeness and complete-

ness, we can better accept our disappointments and stand firm. The prophets told us, and Jesus reassured us: Be strong! Fear not!

Sometimes we have to update our stories and replace them with newer, more accurate ones. When we make God’s story our own

and tune our radar into His voice, what we hear is all about restoration, healing, and rejuvenation! This is true even when we think

we have hit rock bottom and can go no further. There is always hope. Remember the words of Julian of Norwich: God made us, God

loves us, and God keeps us. Now, listen to God when He says, “be opened!” Be healed and allow your stories to change.

From the Creation Care Team

Celebrating the Season of Creation 2021

Join us for Labor Day Mass at McCannon Farms– Sept 6, 9am

Every year from September 1—October 4 (Feast of St. Francis of

Assisi), we have the opportunity as Christian Catholics to celebrate creation

in all its glory and to refocus our attention toward protecting it.

To start our Season off, our parish will be dedicating our Mass on Labor Day,

Sept. 6, to the environment. It will be held outside (weather permitting) at

9am at McCannon Farm, 45W104 Raymond Road in Big Rock. We will be

following all of the recent safety protocols outlined by the State of Illinois.

Make sure to bring your own folding chairs (a few benches will be available)

and sit 6-feet away from any other person, couple, or family. An optional

brunch will follow. Bring your own food, utensils, plate ware, etc. and practice

social distancing.

Pope Benedict XIV told us that protecting this inheritance is a way of fulfilling

our role as stewards of Creation. “Caring for Creation protects the inher-

itance the Creator has given us, . . an inheritance essential to our well-

being.” Also, Pope Francis urges us to recognize our connectedness with the

natural world when he stated in Laudato Si’, 139, “Nature cannot be regard-

ed as something separate from ourselves or as a mere setting in which we

live. We are part of nature, included in it and thus in constant interaction

with it.” Please join us for this special Mass. It will be a great way to start our

Season of Creation. Stay tuned for other opportunities that will follow.

Nursing our Bodies…Nursing our Faith

Notes from our Faith Community Nurse

The Importance of Deep Sleep

Experts know that everyone needs deep sleep. Do you know why restora-

tive sleep, or deep sleep, is important? Without restorative sleep, the

chances of infections, thinking and memory problems, and other health

issues increase. There are two kinds of sleep: rapid eye movement

(REM) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM). Deep sleep occurs in stage

3 of NREM, also called N3 or slow-wave sleep (SWS). The deepest sleep

happens in the first half of the night. During slow-wave sleep or deep

sleep, many things are going on in the body. The brain and body cools

down. The heart rate and respiratory (breathing) rate slow down. Blood

pressure drops. The body repairs muscle and other tissues. The body

uses less energy during deep sleep and has the chance to recover from

the busy, hectic day it went through. Deep sleep strengthens the

immune system daily and lowers chemicals that cause inflammation.

Poor quality sleep affects mental and physical well-being. It is linked to

mood disorders, migraines, heart disease, and obesity. Keep in mind

that a lack of deep sleep raises the risk of developing dementia,

Alzheimer’s disease, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and type

2 diabetes.

Healthy habits that may help to get more deep sleep are: give yourself

enough time to sleep; get up at the same time every day; avoid caffeine

late at night; avoid alcohol before bed; exercise regularly but not close to

bed time or take a warm bath an hour before bed.

If you are experiencing sleep difficulties, it is recommended to talk with

your health care provider. There are a variety of sleep disorders that

may cause sleep disturbances such as obstructive sleep apnea. This is a

disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. This can lead to

serious complications such as sleepiness during the day causing lack of

focus and concentration, heart problems, high blood pressure, stroke,

glaucoma and type 2 diabetes. Treatments are available for sleep apnea

and other sleep disorders that will help you get the deep sleep that you

need to stay healthy. (Source: WEBMD)

Turn to Scripture to Help You Sleep. There are times when it is hard fall-

ing and staying asleep due to the many things that we are thinking

about or worrying about before turning off the light and going to sleep.

This is happening more and more as we are coping with COVID-19 and

how it is changing our lives. As a people of faith, it is important to turn to

God for peace and comfort. God is with us as we experience burdens,

worries and anxieties. Turn to prayer and scripture to find rest in God’s

presence! This is Labor Day Weekend, thank God for the gift of work but

also for the gift of a good night sleep.

“In peace, I shall lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me

secure.” (Ps 4:9). For assistance or resources to improve your health,

contact me at 630-466-0303 ext-113 or [email protected].

Prayer of St. Pope Pius X to St. Joseph the Worker

O Glorious St. Joseph, model of all who labor, obtain for me the grace to

work in the spirit of penance in expiation for my numberless sins; preferring

devotion to duty to my inclinations, to work with joy and gratitude, regarding

it as an honor to develop and employ by work the gifts I have received from

God; to work with order, peace, patience and moderation without ever re-

coiling from weariness and difficulties, to work especially with pure intention

and detached from myself, ever having death before my eyes, and the ac-

count which I must give for time lost, for talent unused, for good committed,

and for vain satisfaction in success, so fatal to the work of God. Amen. Con-

secration to St. Joseph Fr. Donald J. Calloway, MIC
