Our Mission Statement

We, the parishioners of Saint Katharine Drexel Parish,

serve Southeast Washington County with a spirit of

welcome, compassion and charity.

We are a community rooted in the Eucharist

and nourished by the Sacraments.

We come together to joyfully celebrate our faith in

prayer and worship, respecting our spiritual diversity

and cultural heritage. We are sent forth from this

Eucharistic community, in response to the call of Jesus

our Savior, to reach out to youth, families, elderly, and

all those in need in our parish, communities and

beyond. In the pioneering spirit of our patroness, we

offer support through witness, prayer and good works,

and we embrace the challenges and opportunities of

what it means to be a Christian

in an ever-changing world.

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 4

Dear Friends in Christ:

The Sacred Scriptures

proclaimed at Mass this weekend

are very human ones. The

challenge we receive from these

Scriptures involves asking our-

selves if we can relate to those

followers of Moses in our First

Reading from the Book of Exodus who felt that

the road home was too hard. Rather than wait

for God’s plan, they decided to distract them-

selves, building other gods into their lives.

From Saint Paul’s Letter to Timothy in our Second Reading we find a tremendous message of

hope as Saint Paul writes: “You can depend on this as worthy of full

acceptance: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”

In the Gospel, we hear the compelling story of a compassionate father who seeks out the lost

and dares us to discover him. Jesus also tells us of the lost coin being found, the lost sheep being

sought after.

In all of these passages from the Scriptures, we are called to open our eyes to our worth, to know

that no matter what we have done or failed to do, God’s love always surpasses our often narrow

view of the Lord. At times, it is we who refuse, it is we who find ways to ignore the emptiness we

may feel when we walk away. This is a story of discovery and forgiveness. Often the difficulty with

reconciliation is not in accepting that we are sinners – we may do that all too readily – rather the

challenge can be for us in accepting that we are forgiven. The story shows us that God’s mercy is

always there for us, but it depends on us as to whether we receive it. If we have moved away from

God, his mercy cannot reach us until we recognize where we are and “come to our senses” as did

the prodigal son in the Gospel.

There is another important aspect of forgiveness that needs our attention between God and our-

selves. Sometimes in life we have to forgive God. Terrible things do happen in life; that is part of

being human. But sometimes people blame God for it and they spend many years angry at God

because of what happened. As with any anger or resentment, if we carry it around for long, it will eat

us up inside. At times it may be understandable, but even then it will not bring any good to hang on

to it. It will only drag us down. What we are challenged to do when we have questions about why

things happen is to turn our focus to the Cross. True, there may be nothing that we can do to

resolve things in our lives, especially in our past. We do not have to revisit those things that have

already been forgiven. Our focus must move away from our own mistakes, resentment and failures,

and begin to concentrate on putting Christ back at the very center of our lives. If we work hard at

keeping Christ as the center – our relationships with others will be turned around too, all in God’s

time.

Thankfully God is patient with us. If life takes us in the wrong direction, if we get lost, then we

need to allow God to seek us out and take us back. But we have to choose not to stay lost, and, in

humility, head back home. And the homecoming will be something to celebrate!

“All that God looks for from us is the slightest

opening and he forgives a multitude of sins.”

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick/ Hospitalization

A reminder, for anyone who may be facing serious surgery in the coming weeks, you will want to make

arrangements to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The celebration of the Sacrament of the

Anointing of the Sick can be arranged following the weekend Mass which you are attending. In this event, kindly

contact the parish office to indicate that you would like to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and

indicate the weekend Mass that you will be attending and the priest will be happy to celebrate the sacrament

with you. It is also important that when you are hospitalized for surgery that it is noted on your hospital

registration that you were anointed before you were hospitalized. It is understood that if you have celebrated the

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick in the last few months, you need not be anointed repeatedly, i.e. each

time you are hospitalized. Also, when you are hospitalized, it is important for you to have a family member con-

tact the administration office of our parish and inform the office to ensure that you the priests are aware of your

hospitalization.

Please Close Exit Doors to Church

Upon entering and exiting the doors of our churches, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE be certain that the doors

are CLOSED. So often, people leave the doors open and in the summer months the air conditioned cool air es-

capes and the air conditioning system has to work overtime. Let us be good stewards and pay particular care to

ensure that the doors of the church close behind us.

Drexel Hall Available for Rentals

Drexel Hall/Bentleyville is available to rent for your gatherings/parties

(Baptism Receptions, First Holy Communions, Graduations, Wedding

Receptions, Birthdays, Anniversaries, Baby Showers, Wedding Showers,

Funeral Repast Luncheons etc.) Please contact Stan Glowaski, Scheduling

Manager at 724-239-3673 for more information.

As I begin my ministry here at St. Katharine Drexel, I feel truly blessed and inspired to assist this

wonderful community in sharing our faith and spreading the Gospel. I have been welcomed warmly by

Father Ed, the parish staff, and members of the core teams of LIFT and Evangelization ministries. We

are all ready to begin our good work together for the parish and for the greater Kingdom of God!

This Sunday, September 15

th

, the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday, with the theme, "Stay with

Us". Those of us who serve as catechists of children in our family-centered LIFT program will be

commissioned at 11AM Mass at Bentleyville in the Main Church: They are: Amy Sneith (Grade

1), Chris Quinn (Grade 2), Toni Hoak (Grade 3), Vita Blackburn (Grade 4), Adrian Gordon (Grade 5) and Sue Morello

(Grades 7 and 8).

We are in immediate need of one catechist for Grade 6, and also hope to recruit and train more who feel they are called to

this important ministry. If you are interested, please contact me at 724-209-1370 (ext 412) or [email protected]

Please pray for our catechists and for all catechists as well. Keep in mind Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all

Catholics to rededicate ourselves to the important mission of handing on the faith to others and being witnesses to the

Gospel

Our LIFT sessions for families of the parish will begin the first weekend in October, and registration is available through

email sent to each family or on the parish website. The cost is $45.00 per family, and our format of coming together as

families once per month and learning weekly with parents' guidance using the materials will remain the same.

We have offered this type of program in several other parishes where I have ministered and it has been successful in

bringing families much closer together in faith. There were also opportunities for children and parents to serve those in need,

learn more about liturgy and prayer and experience the seasons of Christmas and Easter more meaningfully as Catholics.

Also, the parents will feel confident and fully supported by myself and the parish as they share our faith with their children. I

am confident we will have a very good experience.

I am looking forward to meeting each and every one of you, and will always keep you in my prayers as I ask for yours in

return. In all, Blessings!

Faith Formation Collection - September 21

st

& 22

nd

Next weekend’s second collection will be for Faith Formation. As we endeavor to “Live in Faith Together,” a great deal of

resources – spiritual, temporal, and financial – are necessary to provide excellent formative experiences for participants of

our monthly LIFT intergenerational sessions which will continue in the Fall. In particular, financial resources are needed to

provide the meals and materials for the participating families and friends, as well as stipends for the guest speakers at the

events. Your financial generosity goes a long way to serve the mission of building the domestic church, and we are grateful

for your support. May God bless you for your generosity!
