The feast of All Saints is a reminder to us that those whom we have loved in life and who are now no longer with us physically here on earth, are nevertheless still an important part of our lives. The Church teaches us that remembering family members and friends is part of how we can continue to honour those people who have played significant role in our lives and how we can continue to be thankful for having known them in this life. The Church often talks about the ‘Communion of saints’ as a way of saying that all of us are in God’s care, all the time: this includes those who are living now, and those who have gone before us. Retreat Experience: At the end of last week, as indicated in the newsletter, I took part in a retreat for Principals at Sevenhill. During that time, we were challenged to stop and take time out to create some space in our lives to consider the things of importance in life. As I talk daily to parents, I become increasingly aware of the need for all of us to have even short breaks during the busy-ness of daily life, so that we can catch our breath, take time to think and plan for what lies ahead. What I learnt last week is that this is not a luxury but a necessity if we are to attend to our well-being, physically, mentally and spiritually. How often do we find ourselves thinking, ‘if only I had a few minutes to myself to sort out what I need to do’, or, ‘there aren’t enough hours in the day for...’ with these thoughts in mind, it is not always necessary to go away physically, but it is important to recognise the need for some time during the day to stop and reflect on what is happening, how it is affecting us, and even why we do things the way we do them. One of the practical things we learnt last week was simply to stop at the end of the day, find a quiet place and think about the following: What were the good things that happened today? What can I give thanks for? Who were the people I met during the day? What were some of the challenges of the day? What could I do better tomorrow? This process is as simple as winding back the day and replaying some of the events and thinking of some of the people who have been part of our day, so that we can give thanks for the day and look forward with hope to a new day tomorrow. Welcome to new families: Today we held a special assembly to formally welcome the families of our two new Reception children, Jesse and Mikayla. Each family was presented with a flowering plant as a symbol of our welcoming these children into our school community and as a living reminder of the journey these children are beginning with us at this school. Just as the plants will need to be tended and cared for, so, too, these children and their families are embarking on an exciting journey with this community to learn together, to support one another and to build up the community. Many thanks to the parents who were able to come along and enjoy morning tea with our families. With best wishes and blessings for a great week ahead. Kathy Horan Principal.
