The Barmera Barmera Library & Council Customer Service Centre Newsletter Winter 2014 Welcome to Winter! Brrr! The good news is that once the shortest day of the year is over (June 21st) then we’re on the downhill run towards a sunny springtime! Can’t wait! Meanwhile, make the most of the cold weather and curl up with a good book by the fire or heater. Check out our new book and DVD lists in this edition. If you’re thinking of travelling somewhere warmer, (Spain might be nice!) we can help you with travel and language research. New this month are a great selection of up-to-date travel books and language kits. If you’re wondering what to do in the school holidays, check out the back page for our great Winter Holiday Programme for the kids. We have a copy of The Chookman DVD for loan. We wish Paringa man Frank Turton well with the sale of this great local documentary by Marc Cousin. Below left is Frank Turton holding copies of The Chookman. Another creative Barmera Library member is 12 year old Jasmine, shown below middle, with her entry into the National Youth Week Graphic Novel competition. Jasmine’s entry wasn’t the winning one selected from the State entries, but we think she’s a winner anyway! We want You! “Our Stories 2” On the subject of creativity, while you’re stuck in- side in the cold weather, it’s the ideal time to get creative and accept our invitation to write and share a story with us! Your story will be included in our new 2014 book ‘Our stories 2’ for local library users to read and enjoy. Pick up the invitation at our front desk or email [email protected] for more details. Everyone has a story to tell so be adventurous, be creative, be generous and share a story with us. Stories will be accepted until end of July. A Bush Poetry afternoon held at Barmera Library during the recent Country Music Week was attended by 70 people. Award winning poet Bob Magor and popular author and poet Jill Wherry (both shown below) gave their time and talents to make the afternoon a great success. Walk-ups included local and visiting poets with our own ‘Ukulele Lady’ Joyce providing musical entertainment to round off the afternoon. Our winning window display is show at right.

What’s Better? Book or Film?

With our new One Card system making it easy to borrow quickly from all over the state, you can try both the book and the film and decide yourself! The classic ‘12 years a slave’ first published in 1853, is one example. Out now as a new DVD and available for loan as a book, an ebook ,an audio book, and in large print. So there are plenty of choices if you want to read ,watch or listen to this historic story.

We welcome Renmark Library to the One Card system. This means that library card holders will be able to borrow from all Riverland Public Libraries. Great news for the Riverland. Don’t forget you can use your Berri Barmera Library Service cards in around 130 different libraries in South Australia. Great for travellers.

Here’s more - If you’ve seen the movie -try the book - and vice versa! Life of Pi The help Water for elephants Mr Pip The diving bell and the butterfly Lovely bones Pillars of the earth Red dog The book thief The girl with the dragon tattoo Lord of the rings Time travellers wife
