NewsKnights of Columbus Announce Winnerof Bob Johnson Memorial ScholarshipAs many of you know, Bob Johnson was along-time parishioner at Our Lady of Gracewho served our parish and our town in many

ways over the years. Bob’s strong Catholic faith guided himthrough a lifetime of service, including as a veteran of theUnited States Air Force, a lifelong volunteer with the BoyScouts of America, and countless other communityactivities, especially as the organizer of our annual MemorialDay Parade. To the members of the Knights of ColumbusSister Lydia Longley Madeline Council in Groton, Bob wasour founder, mentor, and inspiration. To commemorate Bob’slife of faith and service to our council, our parish and ourtown, the council has established the Robert “Bob” JohnsonMemorial Scholarship to provide $500 to a graduating seniorwho will be attending a four-year college or university andwho exemplifies the values that Bob lived every day of hislife. We asked applicants to share how their Catholic faithand volunteer service have guided them through high schooland how they plan to build on that in the future. Re-Opening of Parishes & Updated ProtocolsDear friends in Christ,As noted in communications from our ArchdiocesanPandemic Response Team, we are beginning the process ofopening up our churches and moving carefully towardpre-pandemic customs. As we do so, we should expect thatthe situation will be dynamic and that ongoing changes arelikely.

There is no blueprint for how society should emerge from ahistoric pandemic. In reality, we are all learning as we

Page 4: ST. JOSEPH’S - PEPPERELL St. J’s Collaborative

Page 4 ☩ June 6, 2021 ☩ The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ ☩proceed through these unprecedented times. We ask that yoube patient with your church leaders and one another as wework through the complexities of re-opening our parishes.

Below are some key points to know as we commence ourresponse to re-opening.

As of May 29, masks are no longer required for vaccinatedpeople in the State of Massachusetts. The State does advisethat non-vaccinated people continue to wear masks.

● Please note there will be no policing of masks orvaccinations (people are not to be asked whether ornot they have been vaccinated).

● Every family is expected to make a sound, reasonable decision about when they are ready totake off their masks and be near other people.

● We will continue to offer live-streaming of masswhere possible.

● Anyone is allowed to wear a mask if they so choose.● The dispensation from the obligation for coming to

Sunday Mass has not yet been lifted.● Collections may be taken up via baskets as has been

traditionally done, (this may take time to re-develop)● Confessions will move in-doors.

Please contact a member of clergy if you have any questionsabout our response to re-opening and continue to check ourwebsite and bulletins for updates.

Additionally, I would like to thank so many of you whoassisted during these many past months, ensuring our churchwas as clean and as safe as possible during the pandemic. There are many who responded with kindness, faith and love(far too many to mention), but please know your ferventprayer, and generous giving of time, talent and treasure hasbeen and is greatly appreciated.

God bless you,~Dcn. Chuck Kelley

A Few “Notes” About MusicAs the Archdiocese enters into this new phase of easingmany of the restrictions associated with the pandemic, weare thrilled to share some news on music at Mass. First, please keep singing the responses that we have been joiningin over the past couple of months -- Holy Mother Church hasinstructed us that the parts of the Mass which are to receivethe highest priority in singing include the dialogues betweenthe people and priest/deacon, the priest’s prayers andcongregational response, and the Lord’s Prayer. So whenyou hear the priest or deacon sing “The Lord be with you”,please feel free to sing the response “And with your spirit.”Likewise when the priest chants one of the presidentialprayers, you are welcome to sing “Amen” at the end. Ofcourse we can all join in singing the Lord’s Prayer as well.

While hymns are not an integral part of the liturgy and are alow priority item on the Church’s list, we are nonethelessreturning to some congregational hymns, so please listen forthe announcement of hymn numbers at Mass and feel free tojoin in singing.

We have been using the same music for the Latin Mass partsnow for many months, and some of you have begun to joinin singing them. Please feel welcome to do so – the texts areprinted in the bulletin, and some of them have references tonumbers in the missal where the actual music is written out. While we realize that some of this still might be foreign tosome people, it is important to note that every piece of musicwas new at some point and can take time to learn. It is evenmore important to note that the Church’s General Instructionon the Roman Missal uses strong wording to state that care

Page 6: ST. JOSEPH’S - PEPPERELL St. J’s Collaborative

Page 6 ☩ June 6, 2021 ☩ The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ ☩should be taken to ensure that “the faithful can say or sing inLatin the parts of the Mass that pertain to them”.

To that end, we are planning a music “open house” of sortsin the near future. This will be an opportunity to come andpractice these parts of the Mass and even explore the

possibility of joining the choir in an informal weeknightsetting. Please stay tuned for more information on this in afuture bulletin. In the meantime, please reach out [email protected] if you would like to find out more about thechoir.~Marc DeMille

Reading IEx 24:3-8When Moses came to the peopleand related all the words and ordinances of the LORD,they all answered with one voice,"We will do everything that the LORD has told us."Moses then wrote down all the words of the LORD and, rising early the next day,he erected at the foot of the mountain an altar

and twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel. Then, having sent certain young men of the Israelitesto offer holocausts and sacrifice young bullsas peace offerings to the LORD,Moses took half of the blood and put it in large bowls;the other half he splashed on the altar.Taking the book of the covenant, he read it aloud to thepeople, who answered, "All that the LORD has said, we will heedand do."

Page 7 ☩ June 6, 2021 ☩ The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ ☩Then he took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, saying,"This is the blood of the covenantthat the LORD has made with you

Reading IIHeb 9:11-15Brothers and sisters:When Christ came as high priestof the good things that have come to be,passing through the greater and more perfect tabernaclenot made by hands, that is, not belonging to this creation,he entered once for all into the sanctuary, not with the blood of goats and calvesbut with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bullsand the sprinkling of a heifer's ashescan sanctify those who are defiledso that their flesh is cleansed,

how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemishedto God,cleanse our consciences from dead worksto worship the living God.

For this reason he is mediator of a new covenant:since a death has taken place for deliverancefrom transgressions under the first covenant, those who are called may receive the promised eternalinheritance.

The word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

GospelMk 14:12-16, 22-26On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread,when they sacrificed the Passover lamb,Jesus’ disciples said to him,"Where do you want us to goand prepare for you to eat the Passover?"He sent two of his disciples and said to them,"Go into the city and a man will meet you,carrying a jar of water.Follow him.Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house,'The Teacher says, "Where is my guest roomwhere I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"'Then he will show you a large upper room furnished andready.Make the preparations for us there."The disciples then went off, entered the city,and found it just as he had told them;

and they prepared the Passover. While they were eating,he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to them, and said,"Take it; this is my body."Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it.He said to them,"This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.Amen, I say to you,I shall not drink again the fruit of the vineuntil the day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
