For Lent - Please Join our New Online Giving! We are very happy to announce that we have upgraded ourOnline Giving software! The platform we have been using forthe past 10 years has been difficult to navigate, not the mostuser-friendly, sometimes impossible to login to, and hadoutdated features. This new platform is much moreuser-friendly and also links directly to our parish database, thereby making the donation process a whole lot simpler andmore efficient. Plus, if you’re already an online giver from ourold platform, your contact info is pre-entered into your newaccount on the new platform - so your new account is readyand waiting to be activated! Here’s how to start giving throughour new platform:

From your computer Visit our parish website and scroll downuntil you click on the blue ParishSOFT Giving icon.

From your phone Text the word “donate” to…● (For St. John’s) 978-575-8861● (For Our Lady of Grace) 978-307-6670

Then let me know so we can take you off our envelope mailinglist or cancel your old online giving account.

Switching over to this new Online Giving platform is one ofthe best ways you can support the parish this Lent. With ourweekly offertory declining more than ever, we’re forced tohave staff work multiple jobs in order to make ends meet. While we’re doing everything we can to keep the parishoperating, we sometimes can’t keep up with the demands. Ifany of you are willing to leave behind the paper envelopes andinstead give your weekly contribution to the parish throughthis new Online Giving, we would be very grateful! Thiswould save the staff members much time and energy that wewould then be able to put towards the ministries that mattermost.~David Flournoy

A Few “Notes” About MusicThis is the first installment in a series of articles devoted tomusic at St. J’s – talking a little bit about what we do and whywe do it, and answering some questions that you may have.As you may have noticed, we have started printing the Latintexts and English translations of the chants in the bulletin toassist you in praying this Mass. Today we will cover what

Page 6: ST. JAMES’ - GROTON ST. J St. J’s Collaborative · Groton, Pepperell , Shirley, Townsend or Westford, should call the St. Catherine’s St. Vincent de Paul phone # (978-320-4214)

exactly these chants are.

Most of the chants fall into one of two categories – Ordinariesand Propers. The Ordinaries are the texts that one “ordinarily”hears at Mass, including the Kyrie (Lord, Have Mercy), Gloria(Glory to God, not on Sundays during Lent, of course),Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy) and Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). These texts are always the same.

The Propers are the texts which are “proper” to a given day –they change with each Mass. While these include obvious

items such as the readings and the celebrant’s prayers that arespecific to a given day, they also include other texts assignedby Holy Mother Church to be sung throughout the Mass.

These “Proper chants” are the Introit (Entrance Chant),Gradual (Chant after the first reading), Alleluia (Chant afterthe second reading, which is replaced by the Tract duringLent), Offertorium (Offertory Chant) and Communio(Communion chant). What is noteworthy about these texts isthat, with just a handful of exceptions, they are taken directlyfrom the Scriptures. Many of them are drawn from the Psalms– perhaps the very first “music of the Church”—and others aredrawn directly from the readings or Gospel of the day. Howwonderful it is to be singing these chants that “belong” to theMass with texts that are straight from the Bible!

Now we have a basic idea of what these chants are. Next weekwe can move onto discussing why we are singing them at St.J’s. God bless you and stay tuned…~Marc DeMille

Today’s MissalIntroit (Entrance Antiphon) (translation)(Ant.) Oculi mei semper ad Dominum, My eyes are forever turned towards the Lord, quia ipse evellet de laqueo pedes meos: for he shall release my feet from the snare;respice in me, et miserere mei, look upon me and have mercy on me.quoniam unicus et pauper sum ego. for I am abandoned and destitute.(Ps.) Reading IEx 20:1-17In those days, God delivered all these commandments:“I, the LORD, am your God,who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place ofslavery. You shall not have other gods besides me.

You shall not carve idols for yourselvesin the shape of anything in the sky aboveor on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth;you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God,inflicting punishment for their fathers’ wickednesson the children of those who hate me,

down to the third and fourth generation;but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generationon the children of those who love me and keep mycommandments.

“You shall not take the name of the LORD, your God, invain. For the LORD will not leave unpunishedthe one who takes his name in vain.

“Remember to keep holy the sabbath day.Six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God.No work may be done then either by you, or your son ordaughter,or your male or female slave, or your beast,or by the alien who lives with you.

In six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them;but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD has blessed the sabbath day and madeit holy.

“Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the landwhich the LORD, your God, is giving you.You shall not kill. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male or female slave, nor his ox or ass,nor anything else that belongs to him.

Gradual (Chant after First Reading) (translation)Exsurge Domine, non prevaleat homo; Arise, O Lord, let not man prevail;iudicentur gentes in conspectu tuo. let the gentiles be judged in your presence. In convertendo inimicum meum retrorsum, When my enemies are turned back in defeat, infirmabuntur et peribunt a facie tua. they shall lose strength and perish before your face.

Reading II1 Cor 1:22-25Brothers and sisters:Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified,

a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike,Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

Tract (Chant after Second Reading) (translation)Ad te levavi oculos meos, I have lifted my eyes up unto you,qui habitas in caelis. who dwell in the heavens.Ecce sicut oculi servorum Behold, as the eyes of servantsin manibus dominorum suorum; look to the hands of their masters;Et sicut oculi ancillae And as the eyes of a maidservantin manibus dominae suae; to the hands of her mistress;Ita oculi nostri ad Dominum Deum nostrum, So do our eyes look unto the Lord our God,donec misereatur nostri. until he have mercy on us.Miserere nobis Domine, Have mercy on us, O Lord, miserere nobis. have mercy on us.

GospelJn 2:13-25Since the Passover of the Jews was near,Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, anddoves,as well as the money changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords

and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep andoxen, and spilled the coins of the money changersand overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said,“Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.”His disciples recalled the words of Scripture,

Page 8: ST. JAMES’ - GROTON ST. J St. J’s Collaborative · Groton, Pepperell , Shirley, Townsend or Westford, should call the St. Catherine’s St. Vincent de Paul phone # (978-320-4214)

Zeal for your house will consume me.At this the Jews answered and said to him,“What sign can you show us for doing this?”Jesus answered and said to them,“Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.”The Jews said,“This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?”But he was speaking about the temple of his body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scriptureand the word Jesus had spoken.

While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, many began to believe in his namewhen they saw the signs he was doing. But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knewthem all,and did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well.

Fr. St. Martin’s Homily NotesNotice how Christ has so much respect for the actualphysical temple of his day. He tells us though the prophetMoses in the first reading of the importance of going to thattemple as a people in a weekly rhythm. It is obvious thatChrist calls us and indeed obliges us to gether this way inthis place with uter intensity. Keep Holy the Lord’s day. Itis a thing that is of cosmic importance. We are remindednow and so we can live accordingly.

Deacon Chuck Homily NotesWe preach Christ Crucified! - and God does as well...From the book of Exodus; we hear God the Father definehimself as a "jealous God, inflicting punishment" for thewickedness done by man... "down to the third and fourthgeneration", but bestowing mercy down to the thousandthgeneration” to those who love the Lord. The punishmentinflicted upon Christ is due to the wickedness done by man -and is the key to bestowing mercy on those who love theLord... Saint Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians emphasizeshow we, as Christians proclaim Christ crucified; (astumbling block for some and foolishness to others...) We dothis by the way we live - by working to keep God'scommandments and running to the Sacrament of Mercywhen we break them… We are promised that the paganisticworld will sneer at God's commandments and the remedy forhealing, but the Christian way of life, is meant to be a sign toothers... a sign that there is more to life than what weexperience here on earth... a life that finds it meaning inChrist Crucified and perhaps our well ordered lives may leadothers to conversion. Jesus proclaims himself as "ChristCrucified" by telling the Jews “Destroy this temple and inthree days I will raise it up.” And so it will come to pass...they will destroy the temple - of his body, on the cross - andhe will raise it up on the third day - Easter Morning! As wecontinue our Lenten journey toward Easter - may we keepproclaiming Christ Crucified by the way we live our lives...by obeying God's commandments - and reaching out for histender mercy when we fail - and continue to do so until wereach our final day of life on earth, when our own ‘temple’ isdestroyed - and we meet this Christ Crucified and risen again- on our own Easter Morning in heaven.

Offertorium (Offertory Antiphon) (translation)Iustitiae Domini rectae, The ordinances of the Lord are right, laetificantes corda, rejoicing the heart,et dulciora super mel et favum; sweeter than honey or the honeycomb;nam et servus tuus custodiet ea. therefore your servant will observe them.

Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy) (translation)Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Hosts.Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in excelsis. Hosanna in the highest.Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in excelsis. Hosanna in the highest.

Mysterium Fidei (Mystery of Faith) (translation)Mortem tuam annuntiamus Domine We proclaim your death, O Lordet tuam resurrectionem confitemur And profess your resurrectionDonec venias. Until you come again.

Communio (Communion Antiphon) (translation)Passer invenit sibi domum, The sparrow has found herself a home,et turtur nidum, and the turtle dove a nest, ubi reponat pullos suos: in which to lay her young;altaria tua Domine virtutum, at your altars, O Lord of hosts,Rex meus, et Deus meus: my King and my God!beati qui habitant in domo tua, Blessed are they who dwell in your house,in saeculum saeculi laudabunt te. they shall praise you forever and ever.

(Verses of Psalm 84 are sung between repetitions of theabove antiphon.)

How lovely your dwelling,O LORD of hosts! My soul yearns and pinesfor the courts of the LORD.

My heart and flesh cry outfor the living God.

As the sparrow finds a homeand the swallow a nest to settle her young,My home is by your altars,LORD of hosts, my king and my God!

Blessed are those who dwell in your house!

They never cease to praise you.Blessed the man who finds refuge in you,in their hearts are pilgrim roads. As they pass through the Baca valley, they find spring water to drink. The early rain covers it with blessings.

They will go from strength to strengthand see the God of gods on Zion.

LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer;listen, God of Jacob.

O God, watch over our shield;look upon the face of your anointed.

Better one day in your courtsthan a thousand elsewhere.Better the threshold of the house of my Godthan a home in the tents of the wicked.

For a sun and shield is the LORD God,bestowing all grace and glory. The LORD withholds no good thingfrom those who walk without reproach.O LORD of hosts, blessed the man who trusts in you!

Marian Antiphon after Mass – Ave Regina Caelorum (translation)Ave Regina caelorum, Hail, Queen of heaven,Ave Domina Angelorum, Hail, Lady of the angels.Salve radix, salve porta, Hail root and gateEx qua mundo lux est orta from which the Light of the world was born.Gaude Virgo gloriosa, Rejoice, glorious Virgin,Super omnes speciosa. fairest of all,Vale o valde decora, Fare thee well, most beautiful,Et pro nobis Christum exora. and pray for us to Christ.Dignare me laudare te Virgo sacrata. AN EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATION.A DEEPER FAITH.

Lumen Verum begins with 6th and 7th grades for the 2021-22 school year. By adding a grade each year, we will be expanding to a school with grades 6 through 12.

Lumen Verum is Latin for True Light. We embrace its full meaning – partnering with parents who wanttheir children to learn virtue, grow closer to Jesus Christ andrecognize that a belief in God is what gives us hope, humility, courage and joy.
