HONORING AL MUNZERDr. Alfred Munzer is a recently retired physician specializing in diseases of the lung who was Director of the Pulmonary Medicine Department at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park. He has served as President of the American Lung Association and in 2000 he was awarded the Will Ross Medal, the highest honor given by the association for volunteer service at the national level. He currently chairs the Board of Trustees of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and remains intimately involved in the global implementation of the

first treaty developed under the auspices of the World Health Association, the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

Dr. Munzer was born in the Netherlands during WWII and lost his father and two sisters in the Holocaust. He spent the first four years of his life hidden from the Nazi occupiers with an Indonesian family residing in The Hague. He and his mother immigrated to the United States in 1958. For the past eight years he has been a volunteer at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum translating diaries from Dutch into English for a five-volume series called Jewish Responses to Persecution and as a docent for the museum’s permanent and special exhibitions.

Dr. Munzer has told the story of his family and of his rescue countless times through the museum’s First-Person series and to groups of judges, law enforcement officers and high school and college students. Five years ago, he had the especially moving experience of sharing the story of his rescue by an Indonesian family with a group of Indonesian students at Temple University. At their invitation, Dr. Munzer went to Indonesia to bring the lesson of courage and compassion in a time of hate to an audience completely unfamiliar with the Holocaust.

Four years ago, he was invited to speak at a Holocaust Commemoration in Scotland where he, a child survivor of the Holocaust was paired with Arn Chorn Pond, a child survivor of the Khmer Rouge. Their bond brought him to Cambodia where he witnessed first-hand the power of music and the arts in bringing healing and reconciliation to a people ravaged by atrocities and genocide. He now serves on the board of the organization dedicated to that vision, Cambodian Living Arts.

Dr. Munzer joined the Theater J Council in 2011, and served as a Co-Chair of the Council from 2015 to 2017. He joined the EDCJCC Board of Directors in 2016.

Thirty years ago, Theater J began as a handful of productions in a townhouse, quickly growing to become the largest and most prominent Jewish theater in the country. Throughout the last three decades, we have produced work that celebrates, explores, and struggles with the complexities and nuances of both the Jewish experience and the universal human condition. We have examined ethical questions of our time, intercultural experiences that parallel our own, and the changing landscape of Jewish identities. We have preserved and expanded our Jewish theatrical tradition and foster commonality across our community and commonality through theater-going experiences. Over half of Theater J’s budget comes from the generous gifts of contributors like you, who see the value of having a thriving Jewish cultural center in the heart of our city, and we are immensely grateful that you have been an important part of our history.

The world has changed dramatically since we began planning our 2019-2020 Season, a season celebrating 30 years of excellence. We may not be able to gather in person, but we continue serve our mission. Safely. From a distance. And that has only been possible because of your support. Thank you for standing with us during this tumultuous time and helping us ensure that one day soon we will welcome you from your home back into ours.

Here’s to the next 30 years.

Warmly,

Jojo Ruf Adam ImmerwahrManaging Director Artistic Director

ABOUT THE EDLAVITCH DCJCCTheater J is a program of the Edlavitch DCJCC. Guided by Jewish values and heritage, the Edlavitch DCJCC engages individuals and families through its cultural, recreational, educational, and social justice programs by welcoming people of all backgrounds to connect, learn, serve and be entertained together in ways that reflect the unique role of the Center in the nation’s capital.

The Edlavitch DCJCC will not stand for racism or injustice to anyone. During this tumultuous time, we as a community must come together and avail ourselves as allies to the black community. We must take a stand against police brutality. It is through our voices that we can make a difference in the greater DC area and in the world. We say the names of those murdered just in the last few months: George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and mourn the senseless loss of countless other sacred black lives.

We must be the change we want to see, so immediately we commit to looking internally and making changes to ensure that we are an anti-racist organization. We pledge to:

• Listen, learn, and deepen our understanding of racism and the violence it brings so we can move our organization towards being more anti-racist;

• Create programming for our community on being anti-racist and how to become better allies;

• Recognize and center the voices of our staff, members, and community who are People of Color.

We know this is only a beginning and that accountability must exist both in the present and in the long-term. We hope you will join us to fight for a world where equality prevails.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTTheater J is honored to welcome everybody to our virtual event. Our building sits on the traditional homeland of the Nacotchtank (Anacostan), farmers and traders who lived along the banks of the Anacostia River. Beginning in 1608, European settlers decimated the Nacotchtank with disease, warfare, and forced removal. By the 1700s, the survivors fled to join other tribes to the north, south, and west, including the Piscataway Peoples, who continue to steward these lands from generation to generation. We know this acknowledgement is only a small step towards justice, and we ask that all of us learn about the past and present and invest in the future of our country’s Indigenous communities wherever we are.

ABOUT THEATER JTheater J is a nationally-renowned, professional theater that celebrates, explores, and struggles with the complexities and nuances of both the Jewish experience and the universal human condition. Our work illuminates and examines: ethical questions of our time, inter-cultural experiences that parallel our own, and the changing landscape of Jewish identities. As the nation’s largest and most prominent Jewish theater, we aim to preserve and expand a rich Jewish theatrical tradition and to create community and commonality through theater-going experiences.
