Theme for the Sunday

T oday, on the last Sunday in Ordinary Time and the last Sunday of this liturgical year (Year C), we celebrate the

Solemnity of Christ the King. A solemnity is the highest rank of liturgical celebrations: a very great feast of public communal worship! Today’s focus is the end-times (which the Church refers to as ‘eschatalogical’) when Christ the King will restore all creation and restore his kingdom to the Father. Then, “freed from the corruption of sin and death”, the risen people of God will rejoice in a new heaven and a new earth and shall sing God’s glory with every creature (Eucharistic Prayer IV).

LITURGICAL YEAR 2015-2016

A s we journey through November, we gradually draw near to the end of the current liturgical year as we celebrate the last three Sundays of Ordinary Time,

the last Sunday being The Solemnity of Christ the King. Ordinary time celebrates the mystery of Christ in all its fullness. In these last Sundays of the liturgical year, our focus turns to the return of Christ and the fulfillment of the Kingdom.

MEMORIAL OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

N ovember 21st is the feast of the Memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. which was entered into the Roman calendar in

1585, and commemorates the presentation of the Blessed Virgin when Mary’s parents brought their three-year-old daughter to the Temple in Je-rusalem to offer her to God, as was the custom. Today the feast cele-brates the recognition of Mary as a temple where God lives. It is also the Feast of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

NOVEMBER 22 - MEMORIAL OF SAINT CECILIA, VIRGIN, MARTYR: Cecilia is patron saint of musicians. Her association with music stems from a story that at her wedding feast she sang to God in her heart. It is recorded that “while the profane music of her wedding was heard, Cecilia was singing in her heart a hymn of love for Jesus, her true spouse”. Cecilia, her husband Valerian, as well as his brother Tiburtius, were martyred for their faith. She is one of seven women, besides the Blessed Virgin Mary, commemorated by name in Eucharistic Prayer I.

November 23 - Memorial of Saint Columban, Abbot: Born in Ireland, Columban was one of the greatest of the Irish monks who carried Celtic Christianity throughout Europe at a time when paganism threatened to extinguish the faith. At age 40, Columban, along with twelve companions, founded ten monastic foundations in Gaul (France) over a period of ten years. Following this, Columban spent the rest of his life in Europe preaching and building new foundations which survived for centuries.

NOVEMBER 24 - MEMORIAL OF SAINT ANDREW DÜNG-LAC, PRIEST AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS: In the 16th

century Christian missionaries went to live among the people of Vietnam. From the 17

th to 19

th centuries, some 130,000

Christians were martyred. Andrew Düng-Lac and Peter Thi, Vietnamese priests, were beheaded on December 21, 1839. In June 1988, Pope John Paul II declared 117 Vietnamese martyrs saints of the Church.

November 25 - Memorial of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Virgin, Martyr: Catherine was a woman of learning in fourth century Alexandria, Egypt. At 18 years of age she converted to Christianity. She was imprisoned for speaking publicly against the Emperor Maximinus’ persecution of Christians. While in prison, she was visited by the Empress and the leader of the armed forces, both of whom she converted. For this, she and they were martyred. Tortured by being strapped to a spiked wheel, Catherine was eventually beheaded. She is a patron of librarians, teachers, students, jurists, nurses, unmarried girls, philosophers, those who work with wheels (i.e., potters, spinners, mechanics, etc.), the dying, and several other groups.

RCW MEETING - Monday, January 9, 2017 at 7 p.m.. All ladies of the parish are invited to join the RCW. The membership fee - $10 per year (Sep-Sep). Minutes of the October meeting are available in the Church.

RCW CARD GAME - Saturday, December 3rd

at 8 p.m. Team (Patricia Noonan, Doris Scharpegge and Shirley Byrne). Refreshments can be dropped off at the McCarthy Centre following 5 p.m. Mass.

RELIGIOUS ARTICLES - The RCW has religious articles on display in the McCarthy Centre. Some new articles have arrived including St. Theresa of Calcutta medals.

CHRISTMAS FUNDRAISER The RCW is selling tickets on a GIFT CARD TREE (valued at $500.00) as a Christmas Fundraiser for the parish. Many thanks to those people who donated a gift card. Tickets are available at the parish office and from RCW members.

T he 2016-2017 Living with Christ Sunday Missal is available at the Parish Office for $5.00 each. It will be on sale in

the Church on the weekends of November 12th & 13

th and 19

th & 20

th. This missal helps Catholics prepare for and

participate in the Sunday Eucharistic Liturgy. It is also useful for personal devotion. The Sunday Missal contains

complete readings and Mass texts, as well as selected hymns for Sundays and feast days for the entire Church year.

OFFERTORY ENVELOPES - If you do not receive contribution envelopes and would like to, please contact the Parish Office at 256-3151 and a box will be provided for you. The parish also offers direct deposit for contributions.

PARISH & OTHER NOTES

FOR YOUR INFORMATION - DIOCESAN STIPENDS BAPTISM STIPEND - $25.00 - Baptisms are normally celebrated on the 3

rd Sunday of the month (after a Baptism

Preparation Course has been completed). BAPTISM PREPARATION: The baptism of a child is a very important event in the life of the child, the child’s family, and the parish community. To help parents enter more fully into the celebration of their child’s baptism, St. Joseph’s Parish offers a Baptism Preparation Course once a month. Parents along with godparents are expected to attend the Baptism Preparation Course before the baptism of the child. Please call the parish office to register.

MARRIAGE STIPEND - $200.00 - Please allow at least six months between the time of contacting the Parish and the date of the Marriage. A Marriage Preparation Course is required.

FUNERAL STIPEND - $200.00 - St. Joseph’s Parish has a Bereavement Committee which will contact you to coordinate the funeral services.

WHEELCHAIR AVAILABLE

T here is now a wheelchair available in the church for anyone needing it. It will be kept in the cloak room and will be brought out

for Mass by the Hospitality Ministers.

SOLEMNITY OF THE

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

M ass for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be celebrated in the Cathedral in Grand Falls-Windsor, on Thursday, December 8th, at 5:15 p.m. During this Eucharistic Celebration the ‘Rite of

Closing our Door of Mercy’ will take place, indicating the end of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. Parishioners from the various parishes of the Diocese are encouraged to attend this Mass to pray for the needs of the Diocese. Bish-op Daniels will celebrate the Mass, and a number of Priests throughout the Diocese will also be in attendance. Following Mass, all are invited to an informal social at the Diocesan Pastoral Centre.

STEUBENVILLE ATLANTIC

R egistration is already open for Steubenville Atlantic 2017. In anticipation there will be a

Steubenville Atlantic themed mass at the Cathedral in Grand Falls-Windsor on November 25 at 5:00 PM. Young people who have attended Steubenville Atlantic are invited to come to this mass and participate in the ministries; Young people in grades 9 to 12 who have not previously attended are invited to come along if they wish to find out more about Steubenville Atlantic. Following the mass, there will be a gathering of all interested people, youth and adults, in the pastoral centre behind the cathedral for pizza and information about the gathering which will take place in Halifax from July 7 – 9, 2017. See you there!

HOLY CHILDHOOD ASSOCIATION

T he Holy Childhood Association was founded in France in 1843. It’s purpose is to encourage all

children to be aware of the needs of children living in mission dioceses throughout the world. Under its banner “children helping children”, monies raised

are directed towards self-help programs involving the building of schools, the provision of health and nutrition programs and medications, school fees, and teaching and learning resources. Children in communities, orphanages, homes for the disabled, refugees, and those living on the streets are assisted by the generosity of children who wish to make the love of Jesus known everywhere. Please consider supporting this worthwhile cause by taking a Holy Childhood Coin Bank (available at the back of the church). Once filled they may be dropped off at the parish office or placed in the collection at Mass. Thank you.

NOTE FROM THE FINANCE COMMITTEE

O ver the next six months the Parish will initiate a number of upgrades to

our facilities; the costs of which will have to come from our parish reserves. The Finance Committee is requesting that parishioners consider making a special contribution towards the costs of these projects. Contributions can be placed in an envelope with your name and envelope number and dropped in the collection plate or at Parish Office. Thank you for your consideration of this request.
