On Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, while on Round-a-bout duty, it is encouraging to see the increasing numbers of coloured vests of our WALKING SCHOOL BUS. P&F Meets 2nd Tuesday each month

Principal’s Welcome

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members

Thank you to our school community for our Disco last Friday night. Both children and parents alike had a wonderful social time.

Special thanks to Danielle Raward and her incredible team of volunteers for their organisation and tireless effort.

On Monday evening, I attended the Registration and Parent Information Meeting for the Jubilee Catholic Parish Sacramental

Programme. We are part of a very special Parish family where our 3 schools of St Ambrose’s, St Finbarr’s and St Joseph’s come

together. At this meeting, Fr Richard Leonard SJ shared with those gathered a summary of St Ignatius Loyola’s Rules for

Discernment. We have a number of our students in Years 3 and 4 who will participate in this preparation for their sacraments in 2015.

Sacraments are signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church through which the life of God is bestowed. There are

seven sacraments in the Catholic Church: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and

Matrimony. The purpose of the sacraments is to sanctify, to build up the Body of Christ and to give worship to God. Sacraments are

signs and they also instruct. The more students are familiarised with the words, actions, symbols, structures and environments of

sacraments, the more they are able to come to a more conscious and active participation in their faith.

“Participation” is a key word to describe the truly special Prep Eucharistic Celebration that we shared on Tuesday. Thank you to the

incredible number of parents, grandparents and caregivers who came along with parishioners to share this Mass with the children. The

focus was “we can make a difference”. The altar and Church were decorated by with art work from the children. The Prep student’s

participation in this Mass was beautiful. Thank you to Fr Josen for celebrating and our Prep teaching team for their preparation. It is

amazing when you stop and reflect that our Prep children have only been at school for 9 weeks. They have settled so well and are

trying their very best to be part of the St Joseph’s learning community.

Currently, our teachers are conducting Parent/Teacher interviews. These meetings are to share how your child is currently progressing

in their learning and set goals for the next step in their journey. Positive parent partnerships are essential. The values underpinning our

Relationships Policy include respect, honesty, openness, clarity, responsibility, tolerance and forgiveness. Feedback from teachers

regarding parent meetings has been extremely positive and reflective of these values. The Kids Matter: Australian Primary Schools

Mental Health Initiative prioritises the importance of positive parent partnerships. Effective partnerships promote consistency of care

across children’s key environments, and act as a protective factor for children’s mental health. Successful partnerships require

sustained mutual collaboration, support and participation of school staff and families in activities and efforts that result in a positive

effect on children. These meetings are a time to praise the efforts of your child, identify strengths and provide critical feedback to

support the progression of learning.

In these last weeks of Term 1, I will be meeting our Sibling Prep students for 2016. This is a highlight for me as I am introduced to

our 2016 Prep students. So far they have been truly delightful. I encourage you once again, as parents and community members of St

Joseph’s, to positively promote our wonderful school through your networks.

On Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, while on Round-a-bout duty, it is encouraging to see the increasing numbers of coloured vests

of our WALKING SCHOOL BUS. This initiative supports our fitness, well-being and decreases traffic congestion and pollution.

Please consider this healthy alternative every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. We acknowledge the great leadership of the Active

School Travel Team and our partnership with and support from Brisbane City Council. Our students certainly enjoyed their

presentation on Monday at Assembly and the delicious breakfast on Wednesday morning to promote and launch this initiative for 2015.

Please come along to join our school community in prayer as we celebrate the Holy Week story. Next week, we will begin each day

with prayer assembly in the Hall. We will gather at 8.35am. This means that the morning supervision for Prep and Year 1 will be in

the Hall from 8.15am each day next week. These prayerful reflections for Holy Week will be a wonderful way to end our term as a

Christ centred learning community.

Best wishes

From the APRE Caritas: Project Compassion

Thank you for your generous support of our Caritas: Project Compassion appeal. It has been wonderful to visit class-

rooms and hear the children excited about being part of helping someone else access food for life through sustainable

projects. Our appeal will wrap up next week so please keep those coins coming in.

Prep Mass

On Tuesday our Prep students, teachers and families gathered in the Church for Mass. The focus of the Mass was how we can

make a difference by doing little things for others. It was so heart-warming to see our youngest students participate so enthusiasti-

cally in prayer and song.

Holy Week

Next week will gather as a Christ-centred learning community each morning in the Hall from 8:35am. During this Sacred Prayer

time, we will be focusing on the events of Holy Week and prayerfully retell and reflect upon the story of the last week of Jesus’

life. Families are most welcome to join us each day.

Year levels will be leading this Sacred Prayer time:

Monday – Palm Sunday – Prep and Year 1

Tuesday – The Last Supper / Washing of the Feet – Year 2 and 3

Wednesday – Jesus Praying in the Garden / Jesus is Arrested – Year 4 and 5

Thursday – Crucifixion – Year 6

For this last week of term, the Prep and Year One students will be supervised in the Hall/Oval area in the mornings before

school.

Year Six Service Leadership Groups

In Term Two our Year 6 Service Groups will begin. Based on the Servant model of leadership exemplified historically by Jesus

and today by Pope Francis, the time has come for our Year Six Leaders to give back and serve the St Joseph’s community. There

are three service groups that are aligned with our Franciscan values of Humility, Care and Respect. The students will commit to

one service group each term. The Year Six teachers Mrs Busby and Mrs Johnson, along with Mrs Burke and myself will facilitate

these student-led groups during school time. The Humility Service Group will have a focus on the Religious Life of our

School. The Care Service Group will focus on social justice action and building positive relationships within our school. The Re-

spect service group will focus on stewardship of creation and sustainability at St Joseph’s. These Year Six Service Groups are

aligned with our staff Curriculum Teams and at various times, the students and staff will work together on specific projects and

initiatives.

Sacrament of Reconciliation

Parish. If you missed the parent information and enrolment night on Monday and wish for your child to be involved this year,

please make contact with Jenny Donnelly as a matter of priority [email protected]. There is an opportunity for final enrolments

this Saturday.

transport, grocery shopping, ironing or whatever activity best would help the family. Any assistance given is completely

confidential and anonymous.

You can get assistance by asking the office or through your class representative. If you are a friend of a family that might need

assistance, please ask them if they would like some help and let the office know.

As we have new families to the school and some that have left, I am starting a new contact list of helpers. All of the old list is

being discarded, so if interested in helping please send your email address and class of oldest child to: Cath Hargraves email

St Joseph’s P&F – Building community, supporting our school

We’ve been busy!

Just two months in and the hard working and enthusiastic parents of our school have much to be

proud of, with numerous activities already under our belt, and many more on the way.

In 2015, the P&F has decided to direct all our work towards three key principles – (1) enhancing our

children’s education; (2) fostering maximum parental involvement; and (3) building a stronger sense

of community for our children and ourselves.

We are – or have – raised funds for –

P&F RECORDS/ADMINISTRATION:

In 2015 and beyond, the P&F is determined to, wherever possible, reduce the administrative load on

our parent volunteers. And that’s where technology comes in!

With the help of, Jackie B, we are automating many of our P&F records and processes, using

Smartsheets, FlexiSchools and Trello.

Along with brown paper tuckshop bags, we are in the process of slowly and carefully saying goodbye

to pen and paper lists, and much of the ‘reinvention of wheel’ that has happened in the past.

With the help of technology, we are working to capture the know-how of experienced parents

before they leave the school, by creating permanent electronic records. Our P&F Executive is seeking

to maximise parent volunteer time to raise funds and build a sense of school community.

We’ll create, in essence, a ‘how-to’ manual on how to conduct each of our major events. After all,

who among us knows all we need to know about workplace and safety, and where to hire what .

Our Treasurer, Susan S deserves special mention. Susan has established new procedures to ensure

parent volunteers are efficiently reimbursed .

THANKS:

Every one of our activities has required careful management, organisation and delivery from parent

volunteers. Many , many thanks are due to all our convenors and volunteers. Some are listed above,

but there are many more and I sincerely thank everyone of you who have helped.

We know not everyone is in a position volunteer, but if you feel tempted to do so, we would love to

have you. Each of the convenors listed above have been ably helped by hundreds of volunteers.

Some jobs – like staffing the BBQ or marshalling the kids at Kilometre Club – can take as little as half

an hour. Those who have ‘taken the plunge’ will tell you it can be a lot of fun, and a wonderful way

to meet others in the school community and make new friends.

Whether you volunteer, or just support our events, together we are making a significant financial

and pastoral contribution to our children’s school lives.

Cate Clifford,

P&F President

ST JOSEPH’S NETBALL CLUB Congratulations to Lucinda H (11’s), Claudia L (11’s) and Chloe D (12’s) for being selected in the North West District Netball teams. Congratulations also goes to Ella C and Chloe D for having progressed through the Player Development Programme and were selected in the DPNA rep teams and we wish them all the best this Sunday at the DPNA Rep Carnival. Team News – Round 1 St Joseph’s 1 – U12 Gold (Div 2) v AHS 37 A steamy start to the 2015 season for the U12 girls. With some girls playing their first competitive game, the team showed early signs of a team to watch out for this season. Lovely centre court speed by Rose and Ella, tight defence by Charlotte and Chloe and some great positioning the circle by Sienna and Claudia. Real courage was displayed by Chloe and Lucinda who both fell victim to the slippery surface and had to leave the court for first aid, however they dug deep and returned to play in later quarters. Coming away with a win after a tight and fast game, well done Joey’s U12 Gold. St Joseph’s 16 - AHS 13 St Joseph’s 2 – U12 Brown (Div 3) vs Canons 12 The girls started the season off with a bang with an awesome first quarter with great passing up the court and accurate shooting. The defence did a great job keeping Canons out of their goal circle for a lot of the quarter. However the rest of the game saw Canons step up with great passing, shooting and in particular very good defence. Unfortunately we didn’t come off winners but there is a lot of promise and enthusiasm and it all bodes well for a good season. St Joseph’s 3 – U11 Gold (Div 2) v The Valleys 23 A great effort in the first game of the season by the girls. Nice teamwork and some good passing contributed to some early scores in the game by Genevieve. However, the Valleys team played strongly and stayed ahead for the remainder of the game. The Joeys Gold team never gave up though and kept the pressure up to their strong opponents. Well done on a good game girls! Final score Valleys 21 Joeys 2. St Joseph’s 4 – U10 Blue vs Valleys 27 The girls looked confident throughout Saturday’s game, although were understandably a little weary by the end - as a result of being down one player, everyone had to put in four quarters’ worth of effort. Our defence, especially in the opposition’s goal circle, was outstanding. On the attacking side, mention must be made of how well the ball was moved around our goal third, ensuring our shooters were in good position to make many successful attempts at goal. What a delight it was to watch the girls perform so pleasingly in their first game of the season - and to see such a convincing win! St Joseph's 5 - U10 Orange v Pine Hills 20 We were so proud of our girls! What a great start to our season! They regularly secured the ball from the centre pass and showed great skills moving the ball to the goal circle with some quick passes. Our shooters didn't let us down - they shot some wonderful goals! It was a great team effort with lots of intercepts, and some tight defence on some very tall opponents .A special welcome to Harriet for joining our team at the last minute. It's great to have you! St Joseph’s 6 - U8/9 Red v Phoenix St Josephs dominated Phoenix from the opening pass to the final hooter! They controlled the possession throughout the middle third which provided plenty of scoring opportunities. These opportunities weren't converted in the 1st quarter, but once the shooters got their eye in, the enthusiastic crowd were treated to a flood of goals. As good as our attack was, our defence was even better. As we all know defence is always the cornerstone of a successful team. Congratulations to Alissa on preparing the girls for such a great start. Most importantly all the girls seemed to be having fun playing sport on such a steamy morning. St Joseph’s 7 – U8/9 Green v The Gap 54 The girls had a great first game against The Gap 54. Our team scored a goal in the first 2 minutes of the game, and continued on with a great game. The girls learned heaps and did really well spreading out to give their team someone to throw to. Great teamwork girls and a great start to the season! St Joseph’s 8 – U8/9 Maroon v Valleys 34 What a fantastic first game ever at Downey Park for the girls! Under extreme heat they displayed unwavering enthusiasm and determination against a very competitive (and tall!) team. Starting strong in the 1st quarter with thoughtful passes, their form continued to strengthen putting up a great fight in the last quarter - with success in the goal circle! Our St Joey’s girls should be very proud of themselves! St Joseph’s 9 -U8/9 Purple v Raiders 36 It’s a bird, NO it’s a plane, NO it’s the flying netball of our SUPER U8 Golds. Our youngest netballers experienced their first real game this week and there was not a straight face on the sidelines. Our little girls were an explosion of giggles, leaps and dives and they even managed to score a goal in amongst so much fun. Well done girls.
