The Pastor Jots It Down…

My dear parishioners of St. John Bosco, Happy 1st Sunday of Lent! The devil, temptation and our response to the lies of Satan are highlighted in today’s readings. In the 1st reading Adam and Eve give in to the lies of Satan, disobey God, and suffer the consequences. The effects of this Original Sin not only impacted them but also has been handed done to us. We no longer enjoy the preternatural gifts which Adam Eve enjoyed before the fall: infused knowledge, absence of concupiscence (inclination to sin), and bodily immortality. In the today’s Gospel Satan temps Jesus three times. Each time Jesus rebukes Satan with the truth of Scripture and resists Satan’s traps. The devil is miserable and as the old saying goes misery loves company. So, Satan prowls the world seek-ing to snare souls with his lies. Every temptation is a lie. Just as he told Adam and Eve that the apple was good for them; he deceived them into doing something that was greatly detrimental to them. So, too, with us, Satan, the father of lies, temps us to believe that we know what is better for us than God who created us. Thus, we give in to the lies of Satan and choose our ways over God’s ways and rebel against God, our greatest benefactor. This holy season of Lent is a great time for us to strengthen our willpower and our spiritual lives so as to be better able to resist the temptations of the devil. Though this takes effort on our part,we must want to grow closer to God during these forty days. We must plan how we are going to go about it. Last week in the bulletin, I wrote about planning for Lent and gave some suggestions. Congratulations if you have mapped out your personal Lenten practices. If not, you may have given into the temptations of the devil by not taking home a bulletin or by taking one home and not reading it, or by reading it and putting off acting on it until later. Now here it is the first Sunday of Lent. If you have not made a plan for Lent, are you going to make one? Or are you going to let this golden opportunity to grow your spiritual life through works of prayer, fasting, self-denial and almsgiving pass you by. The decision is all yours. God is pulling for you. Satan is tempting you to do nothing. Your vote decides who your partner will be this Lenten Season. For those who need -- some additional suggestions for Lenten Practice:

1. Take home and read your weekly parish bulletin and archdiocesan newspaper.

2. Ponder the Sunday Scriptures to see how God’s word maybe inviting you to change your ways.

3. Pray for those who upset you and cause you angst.

4. Visit a nursing home and visit with some one who has no family left or visitors.

5. Cutback on spending for snacks, meals, eating out, etc., and earmark the savings for the poor.

Let’s make this the best Lent ever for our individual growth in holiness which is the best gift we can give to ourselves, our family and our parish family.

As we enter into this Lenten Season, God calls us to an honest, grace-filled assessment of our

weakness and sins. The Church's call to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving brings us to a

conversion of heart and unites us to the love of Christ. I sincerely pray that your Lenten journey

will be one that leads you to newness oflife and blessings for you and your family.

With the technological advances in our culture and a growing awareness of the dangers that

come with this, we as a Church are called to protect and promote unity and the need for strong

relationships within the family. When a family is truly connected they are more aware of the

ways in which their children and grandchildren are struggling, especially in regards to the effects

of exposure to dangerous content online. This first Sunday of Lent, we in the Archdiocese of

New Orleans invite all parents, parishes, schools, and all organizations to learn more about this

common struggle and how we can protect and provide healing for our loved ones, especially our

children.

Your parish has new resources to help you understand and confidently address this issue arid act

with God's love and mercy toward those in your homes and organizations.

May Lent be a blessing for you and your family and a renewed experience of God's mercy.

The Church’s Lenten Practices and Those Who Are Bound to Observe Them

Abstinence

Every person 14 years or older must abstain from meat (and items made with meat) on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent. Every person between the age of 18 and 59 (beginning of 60th year) must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Fasting

On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

IRA Charitable Rollover

The IRA charitable rollover is now permanent and is a terrific way to make a tax-free gift to your parish using your qualified retirement plan. This gift may also satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD).

How Do I Qualify? You must be 70 1/2 years old or older at the

time if the gift. Gifts must go directly from your IRA to St. John Bosco Parish. Gifts must come from a traditional IRA or

Roth IRA account. Gifts cannot exceed $100,000 per donor.

Benefits of an IRA Charitable Rollover Gift

Gifts can satisfy your RMD without

increasing your income taxes. You will not pay taxes on your IRA

withdrawal when gifted to our parish. You may direct your gift to a program or

area of your choice. It is a wonderful way to create an

immediate impact on our parish outreach.
