FROM THE PRESIDENT www.artloversmovement.com Art Lovers Movement What a wonderful weekend! A heartfelt thank you to all of you who were involved, either by exhibiting or helping or both. The weekend ran very smoothly, thanks especially to the Committee, to those who volunteered for the roster, and to partners and friends who came to help. All of these people contributed enormously. We sold 26 paintings, which was a record. Congratulations to all those who sold. The standard was very high, and I hope it will encourage those who haven't yet exhibited, to do so in 2020. The cafe was a great success this year. Thanks you to all who contributed to that. The quality and variety of 'goodies' was praised by many. A special thank you to Sue Gilbert who did such a great job organising and running the cafe. Our raffle also was successful. Lots of tickets were sold, thanks to those members who took tickets and sold them. We will be making a donation to the Kobe Duck foundation as soon as finances are finalised. Thanks to Tony White (artist), Garry Gilbert (framer) and Westpac (who donated our second prize). We would love to see new people join our Committee next year, so if you would like to be a little more involved, you would be very welcome to come along to any Committee meeting to see what happens. Our next one is on Monday 4th November at Dora Creek Workers Club at 12 noon. Just turn up if you would like to. Regards, Stephanie

is a professional artist based in Mooral Creek, a small community in the

hinterland of the Manning Valley. Jo has been involved in the arts all of her working life . She studied fine art in France with Ted Seth Jacobs, a tutor from the Art Student's League, New York. After a further 3 years at Paddington Art School, Sydney, Jo embarked on a career as a visual artist and teacher. Jo has been awarded numerous prizes for her work and has been a finalist in the Manning Art Prize and the Kilgour Prize. She has been teaching, exhibiting and selling her work in Australia and overseas for 27 years. Portraiture and the Clothed Figure One of the questions that I am mostly asked by students in relation to portraiture is how to capture the character of a person in their work. This most essential and unique component of every individual is expressed through a body and facial features that are all of the one blue print. We are the same and yet so different. In this one day workshop we will look at how character and structure all work together and a further investigation of compositional strategies when working with the clothed figure. Materials List A Progresso or graphite block 6B – 8BA thick felt pen eg Artline 2 x black pastels and 1 x white pastel (Faber Castell Polychromos are the ideal

will need for the day A drawing board no smaller than your paper size. The news print is 46cm x 60cm bulldog clipsa drawing easel if you have one – I will bring a few with me as well

OCTOBER DEMONSTRATION

Eleanor Anson SO MANY hints, tips and tricks to make beautiful paintings. For those who were there, I was totally fascinated by Eleanor’s work and well, BRRR is now in my home. Eleanor mentioned several times that the beauty of her works are from

experimentation—she recommended having fun, stretching yourself and not sticking to realism on every occasion, as this does not allow for creativity.

As regards copyright, while we cannot use someone else’s image, it is quite OK to take

a photo from a movie on the TV, or if we know how, a still print from a movie downloaded on the computer.

For sketching, use a watercolour pencil as it’s easy to remove. For a paint pallet, use cling wrap over a white plastic plate, put another layer of cling

wrap over the top, and when finished let it all dry and you’ll have a lovely paint skin to play with.

The outlines done on her paintings are don't with a Modge Podge bottle. She recommends that as a glue, especially the brown label variety.

Cling wrap can be placed and scrunched , and laid down on canvas, as it makes wonderful tree trunks and bark shapes when paint is dried and cling wrap removed.

Another great trick is to refill Dinensional Magic bottles with paint for outlining. Use cheap paint to start of with, for the design, then use the good paints for finishing. Eleanor used Dimensional Magic for many purposes, helps paint flow, use to seal

holes after using crackle medium,. On the subject of crackle medium, the thicker the medium the bigger the crack, and the

cracks are mostly in the direction of the brush strokes, be they lines or circles. Impasto was used with an orange net to get texture, we saw the fish scales

demonstrated. Stencils are a great way to get patterns, and anything can be used. Imagination!! Shmincke products were mentioned. They are at Adamstown Art Supplies.

There was so much more, that the video would be a great way to

revise.
