Their fundraising drive involved running a mile to complete a full marathon, organising an auction and holding a giant teddy bear naming competition. So far their activities have amassed an amazing £2,500 for a range of charitable causes. Two of our teams made it through to the final heat of the branch rounds of the English Student Union (ESU) Public Speaking competition held in Blundell’s School in Tiverton. On the winning team were Hannah Galvin, Rob Coward and Jessica Salamone who go onto compete at the branch final in St James School in Exeter. Big Congratulations to the year 10 and 11 students who took part (and a big thank you to our driver Andrea Loader!): Team 1: Finley Carney, Mollie Cronin and Maddie Bickley. Winning Team: Hannah, Rob and Jessica. TEAM TALK THEIR WAY TO SUCCESS CLASSROOM TEACHING: Out of this world! 45 Year 5 students from St Marychurch Primary School recently joined us for an immersive virtual reality learning adventure - with a trip to the moon! Using Google Expeditions our own students enjoyed an underwater expedition to see marine life in action for a descriptive writing stimulus, studied animal adaptation in a Borneo, rainforest, toured inside the human body to discover how the ear and brain process sound, ‘met’ a group of natural science experts, visited Teotihuacan (a world heritage site in Mexico) and expanded their virtual knowledge of World War 1. FREE Chromebooks for students We’ve become the first school in Torquay to give FREE Chromebook laptops to students. The move means that every young person in our key stages 4 and 5 (half of our entire student body and all our GCSE and A Level groups), now has the new technology to use and keep for the rest of their school careers. STUDENTS PLAN FOR THE FUTURE Our annual Careers Fair gave students in years 10 -13 the ability to quiz employers on career opportunities available as well as the skills, knowledge and information they need to succeed and get ahead. Representatives from Bishop Fleming, NHS, Santander, Haldons Construction and Universities were amongst those who supported our initiative to help keep students on track, focused, informed and motivated. NEW SIXTH FORM CENTRE Students, staff and distinguished guests joined together to celebrate the patronal feast day of our namesake saint with a service followed by the official opening of our extensively refurbished, two storey, Sixth Form Centre. The Ecumenical Service to celebrate St Cuthbert Mayne day was conducted jointly by the Bishop of Crediton, the Revd Dame Sarah Mullally and the Revd Fr Mark O’Keeffe, Episcopal Delegate for Schools for the Plymouth Diocese and the Parish Priest of The Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart & St Thérèse of the Child Jesus. Afterwards, they blessed the Sixth Form building before taking a tour of its contemporary learning space. “Our students have high ambitions so with this investment into a modern, well-equipped Sixth Form, we are investing in their future and ours,” says Anthony Boughton, Head of Sixth Form at St Cuthbert Mayne School. “This is a modern, well-equipped space where they can immerse themselves in a motivating and inspirational learning environment and gain the skills, knowledge, support and confidence to become independent, highly employable critical thinkers,” he adds. EVENT FUELS SCIENTIFIC INTEREST Tomorrow’s engineers from schools across Devon joined our own when we hosted The Ogden Trust’s Energy Quest to promote study, learning and careers in Physics. IN THE CAN: TINTOBER 2016 Students collect over 2600 tins for Anode, which the charity will distribute to local families in need.
