~PASTOR’S NOTES~

September 2, 2018 This weekend begins the new Mass schedule for Sunday (and Monday). I would like to express my deep appreciation to all those who volunteered on the night of the flood to help clean up. Because of the quick reaction of our staff, parishioners, and others the damage was minimal. We hope the choir loft, if not ready this weekend will be ready by next weekend. The reaction of some other people to this near disaster and damage to the church reminds me of one of the stories of King David from the second book Samuel when David complains about him living in a palace while the Ark of the Cov-enant was kept in a tent: “After the king had taken up residence in his house, and the LORD had given him rest from his enemies on every side, the king said to Nathan the prophet, ‘Here I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent!’” (2 Samuel 7: 1-2)

David would not be allowed by God to build the temple because he killed many people, “King David rose to his feet and said: ‘Hear me, my kinsmen and my people. It was my purpose to build a house of repose myself for the ark of the covenant of the LORD, the footstool for the feet of our God; and I was preparing to build it. But God said to me, you may not build a house for my name, for you are a man who waged wars and shed blood.’” (2 Samuel 28: 2-3)

I hope those who took it upon themselves to criticize members of the parish staff will re-member the homily of September 13, 2013 of Pope Francis, when he spoke for a few minutes on the virtue of humility, adding that Jesus addressed those who practice the oppo-site and who foster “that hateful attitude to-wards one’s neighbor when one becomes a 'judge' of his brother,” calling them “hypocrites.” “Those who live judging their neighbor, speaking ill of their neighbor, are hypocrites, because they lack the strength and the courage to look to their

own shortcomings.”

Before being so outraged at the condition of God’s house, maybe we should clean up the filth of “house” of our own soul if we hope to one day dwell in God’s King-dom.
