MAY CROWNING
Our parish will crown the statue of our Blessed
Mother at St. Columbanus Church Monday, May
15th at 7:00 p.m. The crowning of the Blessed
Mother has been a beautiful tradition to which the
Church—and our parish in particular—has a special
devotion. All parishioners are invited to participate
in the Rosary procession. We encourage our First
Holy Communicants to attend in their “First
Communion” finery. All children are asked to bring
a flower for Our Lady as a symbol of their devotion.
Please join us in prayer to our Blessed Mother for
her intercession and healing in these difficult times.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2017

MAY 14, 2017 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH_ _#481/PAGE 4
We congratulate the boys and girls who received their First Holy Communion on Saturday, May 13.
We thank their parents, and all those in our Parish School and Religious Ed. who worked so hard to prepare
the children for this day.
As I get older, I forget more and more events in my past, but one thing that remains vivid in my recol-
lection is my First Holy Communion. I hope our children will always treasure the great gift (magnum donum)
of receiving the true Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus. May we all show our faith in the true presence
by how we dress and act at Mass and how we live our lives as Catholics.
As I mentioned last week, May 13, 2017 is also the one hundredth anniversary of our Lady’s appear-
ance to the three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. Our Lady’s message was that everyone, if they want
peace, must pray—especially the Rosary—and do penance. The children were also shown many countless
souls going to hell for their sins, especially sins against purity. Francisco and Jacinta Marta on this weekend
will be the youngest canonized saints who were not martyred. In their young lives they did many penances
and prayed the Rosary constantly.
What excuses do we make to indulge ourselves in sinful activities and neglect Mass and praying? Let
us, young and old alike, follow the example of the children of Fatima.
We remember, too, that if it weren’t for the Blessed Virgin Mary, Jesus would not have become man.
This month of May is dedicated to Mary our Mother, and so we will have our May crowning and Rosary pro-
cession this Monday at 7:00 p.m. To honor both the Eucharistic Lord and His Blessed Mother, we will con-
clude our devotion with Benediction. Many saints have expressed the notion that devotion to Mary is a sign of
our salvation. May we all pray and meditate daily on the mysteries of the Rosary in our own family life. That
and going to Mass regularly are two great gifts we can give our children that will last a lifetime.
In Jesus and Mary,
Fr. Frank Samoylo
100 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF OUR
LADY’S APPARITION AT FATIMA
Our Lady appeared to the children of Fatima asking
them to pray the Rosary and make sacrifices to God
in reparation for sins committed against Him. To
honor Mary’s request the Legion of Mary is asking
parish families to sign up and take Our Lady of
Fatima statue into their homes for a week and invite
their relatives, friends and neighbors to say the Ro-
sary. Sign up sheets are on the tables in the front and
back of the Church. Please sign up and we will call
you. Don’t miss this opportunity to please our Lord!
