ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA ROMAN CATHOLIC ALL ARE WELCOMED TO OUR PARISH! We are so pleased that you chose to celebrate with us this weekend. We warmly invite you to active participation in our liturgical celebration. Please feel free to approach one of our Ministers of Hospitality if you are in need of any assistance. No matter what your present status in the Catholic Church, your current family or marital situation, your past or present religious affiliation; no matter what your personal history, age, background, sexual orientation, gender, race, or color; no matter what your self-image or self-esteem: YOU are invited, welcomed, accepted, loved, and respected at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Ithaca, New York. The mission of St. Catherine of Siena Parish is to inspire, engage, and nurture our community through worship, witness, and service. La misión de la parroquia de Sta. PARISH MISSION STATEMENT St. Catherine of Siena Church is a Tompkins County Living Wage Employer THE MOBILEPACK IS COMING! In 2009 a mom from Ithaca, with a heart to repay those who had fed her Haitian children before she adopted them, suggested that our local community could make a lifesaving difference for children across the world. Her initial suggestion led to the first Ithaca MobilePack (IMP) for Feed My Starving Children in 2010. Over the past seven years, more than 8,000 volunteers from various faiths, neighborhoods, backgrounds, and ages have come together to pack meals, called MannaPacks, consisting of vitamins, veggies, soy, and rice. Many of you have participated in packing shifts (the most fun you can have in a hairnet!) and helped raise the money needed to buy the ingredients. In 2016 St. Catherine’s joined the IMP Steering Committee, a group of representatives from several local congregations who work together to bring this event to Ithaca each year. We are very excited to be hosting the 2017 MobilePack here in Mahler Hall October 12–15. Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), founded in 1987, is a Christian nonprofit organization that developed the meal formula for the MannaPacks. They send staff and supplies to locations around the country where the MobilePacks are held. Local communities raise funds for the ingredients and provide the pack site and volunteers. FMSC partners with organizations around the world to get the meals to people who need them most. In fact, the Portal de Belén, the school we support in the Dominican Republic, is a distribution site. What happens at the MobilePack? Groups of volunteers come for two-hour packing shifts. No experience necessary! Volunteers of all ages (the minimum age is 5) work in groups to hand pack the ingredients into MannaPacks. The atmosphere is vibrant with music, cheering, and cooperation, plus a little friendly competition (who can pack the most?). The number of meals packed per session is tallied, and the volunteers learn how many children they fed. Our goal for this year’s pack is 303,264 meals, which costs $66,718. St. Catherine’s gave the fundraising a significant boost with the first annual Beyond the Plate gourmet dinner in late February, which brought in $21,000. There are more fundraising events planned in the area (see inside for information about the upcoming FMSC yard sale). Individuals and businesses can also make donations directly to the IMP (www.ithacamobilepack.org). We are so excited for this opportunity to welcome the community to St. Catherine’s as we work together to help the world’s most vulnerable children and families. Watch for more information about how you can help us make the MobilePack a great success! June 4, 2017—Pentecost

THE MOBILEPACK IS COMING!

FMSC partners with organizations around the world to get the meals to people who need them most. What happens at the MobilePack?

Groups of volunteers come for two-hour packing shifts. No experience necessary! Volunteers of all ages (the minimum age is 5) work in groups to hand pack the ingredients into MannaPacks. The atmosphere is vibrant with music, cheering, and cooperation, plus a little friendly competition (who can

pack the most?).

Parish-Wide Opportunities

SOAP FOR HOPE Catholic Charities is again asking for our help in providing personal care products for our neighbors in need. This includes shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, tissues, razors, deodorant, and the like. Please put these items in the bins provided at the doors of the Church by this Sunday, June 4. St. Catherine’s parishioners have been very generous in the past and have contributed about a third of the items collected each year. If you can help deliver donated goods to Catholic Charities, please contact Jessica Ryan at 339-3480 or [email protected].

PARISH PICNIC Once again, St. Catherine’s Welcoming and Social Committee is hosting our annual Parish Picnic to take place on Sunday, June 11, from 12:30–3 p.m. in the field next to the parking lot. There will be games for

kids and people of all ages, great food, and some great music (and dancing, if you wish). All are invited to bring a dish to share, if you can—desserts and side

dishes. St. Catherine’s will be providing pulled pork, hamburgers and hot dogs, and water and lemonade. You are welcome to bring additional drinks if you wish. If you can’t bring a dish, perhaps you can help with setup on Saturday or cleanup at the end.

LOST AND FOUND Please check with the Parish Office to see whether you might have any items in the Lost and Found. Any items that aren’t claimed in two weeks will be donated. Many thanks for your cooperation.

BIRTHRIGHT FATHER’S DAY FLOWER SALE As we do each Father’s Day, we will be selling roses on June 18 to help support the work that Birthright in Ithaca does to help women who are facing an unplanned pregnancy. Flowers will be $2 each and 6 for $10. Donations are also greatly appreciated, and checks should be made out to Birthright. If you are willing to sell flowers after any of the Masses, please let Ann Marie know at [email protected] or 257-2493.

FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN YARD SALE Once again this year, the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) will be hosting a community-wide yard and bake sale to support the Ithaca MobilePack for Feed My Starving Children. The sale will be held on Saturday, June 17, from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. at the LDS Church, 114 Burleigh Drive—a few blocks from St. Catherine’s.

Last year many of you were able to contribute goods to the sale. This is a great way to empty out your closets and basements and support a great cause. They accept clothing, furniture (not mattresses), household goods, tools, jewelry and scarves, and almost anything else you might have.

We are not able to store donations at the Parish Center, so we ask that donations be dropped off at the LDS Church (114 Burleigh Drive) on Wednesday and

Thursday, June 14–15, between 6–9 p.m.

If you would like to help sort and price, or volunteer at the sale (June 15 and/or 16), please let Ann Marie know ([email protected]). It is great fun, and you can find some great buys!

MOVIE NIGHT On Monday, June 19, St. Catherine’s will be hosting another movie night. This month’s movie is the documentary A Place at the Table. It is an examination of the issue of hunger in America that focuses on the plight of three individuals from different parts of the country who struggle to find adequate nutrition. It has received rave reviews because of its ability to help us understand hunger here in our own country. Mass is at 5:30 (if you would like to attend), a pizza and salad dinner will be served at 6 p.m., and the movie starts at 6:30 p.m. We will have a short discussion after the movie, ending around 8:30 p.m. All are invited. The movie is rated PG. A donation for dinner is appreciated.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION SOCIAL HOUR Don’t forget our Volunteer Appreciation social hours this Sunday, June 4, after the 9 and 11:30 a.m.

Masses. If you have helped the parish in any capacity over the last year, please come so we can thank you! We want you to know it all makes a difference and is truly appreciated. Spouses, significant others, and children are all welcome.

Youth Faith Formation

YOUTH MINISTRY Middle School Youth Ministry and High School Youth Ministry gather in a combined session this Sunday, June 4, for a Summer Joy Festival. Being a Christian is to be filled with the joy of the Lord, especially on Pentecost when we celebrate the power of the Holy Spirit within us! Pope Francis encourages Christian to “love Christ” and “radiate joy.” This youth ministry community-building session uses popular color festival and paint activities to give expression to Christian joy through the use of color. Youth should wear something that can get dirty with paint/mud, a towel, and change of clothes in case they want to change prior to going home. We will grill hot dogs and hamburgers and may even have an ice cream social at the end. For our final session on June 11, the middle schoolers will have an end-of-the-year bash and the high school youth will have a session that will focus on celebrating our seniors.

SAVE THE DATE FOR THE INTERNATIONAL PEACE FESTIVAL Our seventh annual International Peace Festival will take place this fall from Friday, September 8–

Sunday, September 10. Please note that these are new dates (the festival was pushed back a week due to scheduling conflicts). Keep an eye out for updates on the festival as well as information about how you can volunteer to make it a success. Many thanks!

BREAD FOR THE WORLD A very big thank you to all who wrote letters for the Bread for the World campaign—advocating for the poor and the hungry, the most vulnerable among us. Forty letters were delivered to Congressman Reed’s office on May 23. The 34 letters to Senator Schumer and 22 letters to Senator Gillibrand will be hand-delivered to them in Washington. The total number of letters from St. Catherine’s was 96. Thank you again!

SUMMER OFFICE HOURS Beginning after Memorial Day, our parish office hours are 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Monday through Thursday,

and 9 a.m.–12 p.m. Friday. The sliding glass window to the office will be closed from 1–2 p.m. for lunch and at 4 p.m. for the close of the day (12 p.m. on Friday). You might still see staff members working beyond those hours, but we kindly ask that you conduct your church business between the stated hours. We appreciate your cooperation.

LIVING FAITH BOOKLETS We will be placing the Living Faith devotional booklets for July–September in the Church in mid-June. After September, we will no longer order the booklets for the Church. If you would like to subscribe to Living Faith for yourself, please see www.livingfaith.com or write to Living Faith Subscriptions, P.O. Box 292824, Kettering, OH 45429. Many thanks for your understanding.

A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM JEANNIE BARNABA Hello to the St. Catherine’s community! This is Jeannie Barnaba writing to invite you to a special event. On Friday, June 9, there will be a Mass at St. Catherine’s in recognition of my milestone 80th (now 81st) birthday and 25+ years of service to the Music Ministry as a cantor and choir member. This Mass is being rescheduled from a postponed celebration last November 21 due to a nasty winter storm. Mass is at 5:30 p.m. in the Church, with a reception to follow in our new Parish Hall.

It’s really important to me that a way be found to mark this milestone event through a Mass where we can offer gratitude to God for the gift of faith, love, and prayer through music that has been and continues to be such a beautiful and motivating part of life in Music Ministry. Please come and celebrate with us and enjoy some refreshments after Mass.

FROM THE BOOK OF ANN MARIE

Dear Parish Family,

In my previous work I did a lot of leadership training for youth and adults. This summer is the first time in 35 years that I won’t be doing a leadership program. Thinking about that milestone reminded me how valuable these leadership skills are, and that got me wondering if anyone here at St. Catherine’s would be interested in learning some of the skills and information I could share. I don’t make any claim to being a leadership guru—but I think

what I could offer is valuable. My idea is to offer a four-night leadership training for youth and adults. You could come to the whole thing, or just to the particular skills or topics that interest you. Here is what I was thinking about:

Listening Skills: There are courses in high school and college, as well as Toastmasters, that can teach you to be a good public speaker, but unless you study counseling, most people don’t learn the basic skills of being a good listener. And there are some very practical, specific things you can learn that will make you a better listener. This is perhaps the skill that is most universally helpful. Parent–teen communication goes better when everyone listens a little more. Bosses and employees, committee members and colleagues all benefit from more listening. It is, quite honestly, a skill everyone in any type of relationship can benefit from.

Situational Leadership: When you are in charge of a group of people—the kid you are babysitting, a committee at school, a group at work—how do you know how to provide the right type of leadership for that individual or group? This is especially true if you are working with people who are learning something new. How much should you tell them what to do? How much support should you give? Situational Leadership Theory is the most important leadership concept that I have ever learned, and I have found it to be immensely helpful to me in a million situations—teaching my niece to drive, working with a new volunteer, leading a committee, etc.

Personality and Leadership: Facebook has a lot of “personality quizzes” where you can get a nice paragraph about your personality, but do you know how to use that information in your work with others? Many years ago, Myers-Briggs and then Keirsey-Bates developed a leadership questionnaire that gives keen insights into the uniqueness that is each individual. Additional work has been done to help managers know how their particular personality affects the way they lead, in positive and negative ways. Come and learn a little more about why you do what you do and how that can be applied to your life broadly and your role as leader specifically.

Negotiation: You may not think that you need this skill, but we negotiate all the time with people. Who does the dishes? Who gets to use the car? Which group gets to use the conference room today at 11 a.m.? Who will take care of Mom’s or Dad’s needs? We negotiate with friends, family, and colleagues all the time, and there are skills that can help us do so in a way that leaves all involved feeling like they were heard and respected, even if the solution to the situation doesn’t have an easy answer.

Anyone interested in learning about these topics? If you are, let me know ([email protected]), and if a few of you want to head down this leadership training path with me, I will schedule it for a week in July (or August, if necessary). Anyone and everyone can come—so feel free to ask friends and colleagues if they are interested. The more the merrier!

All of these skills and information have really helped me a lot, so I offer them to you as a way of sharing the wealth I have received from others.

Happy Pentecost! May the Spirit continue to enliven our hearts and lives, and the life of this Parish community!

Peace,

A vibrant Catholic Community where all are welcomed, challenged, and supported in their life’s journey.

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE– JUNE 5 St. Catherine’s will be hosting a blood drive for the American Red Cross on Monday, June 5, from 1–6

p.m. If you would like to donate blood, please contact 800-RED-CROSS or www.redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment.

LET’S THANK OUR CATECHISTS, ASSISTANTS, CLOW LEADERS, AND YOUTH MINISTERS! As our sessions wrap up for the year next Sunday,

June 11, we want to take the opportunity to thank the

CLOW leaders, catechists, youth leaders, and

assistants for their dedication to our children and

youth. During the 9 a.m. Mass on June 11, we will be

inviting the CLOW leaders, catechists, youth leaders,

and assistants to the sanctuary for a blessing. After

the blessing, we will ask the children to go to their

catechist/assistant, leader, or youth leader and give

them a small token of their appreciation (like a

homemade card or flowers). Let’s take the time to

thank them for everything they have done for our

children this year!

CALL TO CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME Sometimes it’s easier to ignore environmental challenges like climate change when they seem too big and overwhelming to fix. In his encyclical Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home, Pope Francis teaches: “God, who calls us to generous commitment and to give him our all, offers us the light and the strength needed to continue on our way. In the heart of this world, the Lord of life, who loves us so much, is always present. He does not abandon us, he does not leave us alone; his love constantly impels us to find new ways forward.” In addition to taking some personal steps to reduce your own carbon footprint, contact our U.S. senators, Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and your U.S. House representative (you can reach them via the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121). Tell them that you want the United States to remain part of the Paris Climate Accord, to take leadership in reducing worldwide greenhouse gas emissions, and to provide the help necessary for poor nations to adapt to the impact of climate change.
