which the Blessed Sacrament can clearly be seen and adored. You’ll note that the Monstrance is usually turned sideways on the altar when the Blessed Sacrament is not in the vessel being exposed. This is simply to guard against any confusion of whether Jesus is or isn’t currently present in a Monstrance on an altar.

Eucharistic Exposition and Adoration usually begins with a hymn and, if the Blessed Sacrament is being exposed by a priest of deacon, is accompanied by incense. While the Blessed Sacrament is exposed, different practices of prayer may take place, such as reading sacred scripture, praying the rosary, reflecting on spiritual writings, or simply re-maining in silence to contemplate the greatness of God in the Holy Eucharist. At the end of Exposition, Benediction often takes place in which a hymn of praise is sung, the priest or deacon blesses the people with the Blessed Sacra-ment, the Divine Praises are recited, and the Eucharist is returned to the Tabernacle. Alternatively, the Blessed Sac-rament may be reposed without any special liturgical ac-tion and simply put back into the tabernacle.

While it is true that we can pray anywhere at any time, coming before the Blessed Sacrament in adoration gives us a place free from any distraction, where we can focus on God, allowing us to physically be in his Holy Eucharistic presence. I hope that many from our parish will take the opportunity at the end of the month to spend some time with our Lord during 24 Hours for the Lord! Also, don’t forget that we have Eucharistic Exposition daily for an hour after the 9:00am Mass and for a longer period on Fridays after the 9:00am Mass, ending with Benediction at 3:15pm. Finally, stay tuned for more information about the Oakland Diocesan Eucharistic Congress taking place on Saturday, June 20 at the Cathedral of Christ the Light.

THOUGHTS FROM ANTHONY ARTEAGA A Refresher On Eucharistic Exposition and Adoration

For the second year in a row, our parish will be participating with parishes throughout the Diocese of Oakland in 24 Hours for the Lord, starting at 9:00am Mass on Friday, February 28th and ending with 8:00am Mass on February 29th. During this time, the Blessed Sacra-ment will be exposed in the chapel

and our community is invited to come spend some person-al time with our Lord. In preparation for this, I thought it might be useful to provide a little refresher on Eucharistic Exposition and Adoration.

Any time we come before Jesus Christ present in the con-secrated host, either during Eucharistic Exposition or be-fore a tabernacle, we recognize His great presence and love for us. While all are encouraged to spend as much time as they wish in Eucharistic Adoration, it is very common to set aside one hour for prayer and adoration in the exposed presence of our Lord. This is commonly known as a Holy Hour. The inspiration for a Holy Hour comes from the Gospel according to Matthew. During the Agony in the Garden, Jesus, upon finding the disciples asleep after ask-ing them to remain and keep watch with him, asks Peter, “So you could not keep watch with me for one hour?” (Matthew 26:40). A Holy Hour gives us that oppor-tunity to be in the presence of Christ for one hour.

During a time of Eucharistic Exposition, the consecrated host is normally displayed in what is called a Monstrance. This is the large gold vessel with a window in the center in

Winter Nights is February 24 to March 8 Again, this year, St Bonaventure is joining with Concord United Meth-odist Church on West Street to co-sponsor Winter Nights. Winter Nights Shelter is where faith congregations provide a clean, safe shelter for families. We are responsible for preparing meals, tutoring, enter-taining and reading to children, before the evening meal. We do this from 5 to 7:30/8:00 o’clock on weekdays. Also, we are looking for people to help on weekends…prepare meals (breakfast, lunch or din-ner), keep an eye on the kids or entertain them. We also need some-one to do laundry, 1 or 2 times. Get your small group or your friends together and come and do something fun. If you would like to help or want more information, please give Anne Sparks a call at 676-5146.

The office will be closed on

Monday, February 17, in

observance of President’s Day.
