Parish Mission Statement

St. Barbara Parish carries on the faith tradition estab-lished in 1894 by our Slovenian and German ancestors. Like our founders, we are called by Baptism to live as ex-amples of Catholic faith and values, and as witnesses of Christ in the world. Our parish is small in size but great in heart. We are a diverse community who together seek to strengthen faith through liturgy and education, and through service to community in charity. We strive to love God with all our hearts and minds. We invite you to join us in celebration of God’s holy sacra-ments, to serve His One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, and to spread His Gospel, the Word of Jesus Christ.

Pray for the Sick

Pray for the sick of our parish, our family and friends, especially Joan Crum, David Chabala, Geoff Skundrich, Nicholas Fratto, Michael Car-olan, Karen Recrosio, Margaret Vallelunga, Gloria Fortunato, Edna Koczaja, John Pulford, Mary Ann Chabala, Mary Rosato, Ann Mary Mazzocco, Lois Rosati, Kathy D’Amico, Sophie Kramzer, Catherine Petrich, Maureen Wirant, and those in nursing homes and their caregiv-ers; the return of inactive members of our par-ish to the practice of their faith; the respect of all human life and the end of abortions. We pray for the safety of our troops, their safe re-turn and for their families at home.

Call the rectory office if you are homebound or in a nursing home and would like to receive Communion or if you are a patient in a hospital and would like a visit from a priest, please call 412.221.5152.

A HUMBLE KING Like a tonal center in music, the note to which we keep returning in today’s readings is hu-mility. We wait in joyful expectation for the coming of our Lord as King. But what we are told to expect and rejoice over is a meek and humble king, riding on an ass. Not horses or chariots of the great and mighty, but a humble beast carries the Ruler whose dominion stretches “from the River to the ends of the earth” (Zechariah 9:10). This King comes to ban-ish the tools of the warrior and bring peace. No won-der that a weary world rejoices and gives thanks to God! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Rejoice heartily, O Jerusalem! For see, your savior comes (Zechariah 9:9-10). Psalm — I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God (Psalm 145). Second Reading — The one who raised Christ from death will give life to your mortal bodies also (Romans 8:9, 11-13). Gospel — Come, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:25-30). On Mission: Parish Groupings – When the decisions of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative are announced by Bishop Zubik in the Spring of 2018, the final Parish Groupings will be a part of that announcement. A Parish Grouping is a configu-ration of parishes that will work together during the years that follow to form a new parish, a new community of faith. The Parish Groupings were created based upon input from clergy and parishioners, as well as demographic, financial and other data. The Parish Groupings that are proposed, together with the final feedback from parishes, are now being studied by the On Mission Commission, who will make their recommendations to Bishop Zubik later this year. Have you seen the proposed Parish Grouping for your area? Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more it and to stay informed.
