Welcome back! While January sees the beginning of the New Year, this year, it is also the beginning of a new decade. It is a perfect time to make new personal goals not only for the new year, but also for the new decade. During the month of January, we focus on the virtue of COURAGE. The quote for this month is from Isaiah 41:10, “Do not be afraid; I am with You”. “Be not afraid!” is also what the angel tells Mary at the annunciation. (Lk 1:30) and at the resurrection, another angel uses the same words to tell the women at the tomb that Christ has risen. (Mt 28:5) Jesus himself uses these words to strengthen his apostles (Jn 6:20). It takes a lot of courage to practice and be true to our Catholic faith. During the month of December, we focused on our faith with daily reflection on the advent season, advent confessions took place for our Grade 3‐8 students and we participated in a school Advent mass. In addition, we celebrated many Christmas activities including ‘A Musical Christmas’ concert and Kindergarten Christmas activities. We thank both staff and parents for all your engagement during these worthwhile school events. In the month of January, we look forward to welcoming new families to our school community as Kindergarten registration for the 2020‐2021 school year begins. Registration begins on Wednesday January 15th beginning at 10:00 AM and parents are reminded that they need to register children using the TCDSB online registration website SOAR http://soar.tcdsb.org. We will also be hosting one evening where parents can come to the school to register their child. This will take place on Tuesday February 18th from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM. We remind families that, as per board policy, we are only allowed to admit students who are baptized Roman Catholic (or who have a parent who is baptized Roman Catholic) and live within our school’s catchment boundary. As we enter the new year, we wish all families health and success in 2020!

A New Year’s Blessing Dear Lord, bless this new year, each of its 365 days and nights. Bless our clocks and watches, may they make us aware of the miracle of each second of life we experience. Bless our calendars, may they remind us of birthdays and other gift‐days, as they teach us the secret that all life is meant for celebration and contemplation. Bless us with new moons and full moons. Bless us with happy seasons and a long life. Grant to us Lord, The New Year’s gift of a year of love! Amen.

Student Illness When children are ill, the best place for them to be is at home resting and recovering. Sending children to school when they are sick can potentially result in several difficulties:

The child cannot concentrate on their learning;

Spreading illness to other children in the class and in the school;

An increase in the duration the child is ill as they are not getting the rest they need;

There have been times when parents have sent children to school requesting that the children stay inside for all recesses because they are sick. We cannot accommodate these requests as supervision is provided in the school yard, not in the office. Also, if a child is too sick to go outside for recess, they are too sick to come to school. Please help us reduce the spread of illness at school by keeping your child home until they have fully recovered. If we notice that your child is ill, we will call you requesting that your child be picked up and taken to the doctor. Your cooperation is appreciated by staff, students and the parents of the other children in the class.

Kindergarten Registration for the 2020-2021 School Year Kindergarten Registration for the 2020‐2021 school year will begin on Wednesday January 15th, 2020. Parents/guardians with children born in 2016 or earlier and who will be enrolling in Kindergarten, can apply on‐line using the “Student On‐line Admission and Registration” platform known as SOAR. SOAR can be found here: http://soar.tcdsb.org

Parents will be able to complete an application for registration from the convenience of their own home, the office, a public library, or anywhere there is internet access, 24 hours a day. The on‐line application also offers access to translations in different languages with built‐in help functions and features. Alternately, families may choose to register in person at our school.

As part of the registration process, school staff will meet with parents. These meetings may be scheduled on the electronic application or in person at the school. During the meeting, school staff will verify the original documentation required for registration. This consists of a Baptismal Certificate, Birth Certificate and/or Passport, Immunization record, proof of residence and Application for Direction of School support.

Applications to register children in grades other than Kindergarten can also be done on the online SOAR application platform. Please share this information with any parents/guardians with school aged children in the community. Kindly note that families wishing to register their children for Kindergarten must live within our school’s catchment area.

EXTENDED REGISTRATION EVENING ON TUESDAY FEBRUARY 18th, 2020 FROM 5:00 PM ‐ 7:00 PM. Healthy Lunches and Lunch Drop-Offs A healthy lunch is an important part of ensuring that children’s nutritional needs are met and that they can learn at their most optimal. Reducing the intake of fast food and increasing the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables is one way to accomplish this. We have seen an increase in the number of fast food lunches being dropped off at the office just prior to the lunch bell at 11:45 AM. The increasing number of fast food lunches is concerning from a nutritional standpoint. In addition, the number of lunches being dropped off has created difficulties amoung our office staff who are trying to manage their other duties. We kindly ask that students bring a pre‐packed nutritional lunch to school every day. This would both assist with your child’s learning needs as well as assist us in maintaining an efficient office responsive to the needs of parents & visitors.

[email protected] or 416‐845‐7003 Safety Tips from Child Safe Canada Our primary concern at St. Augustine Catholic School is for the health and safety of all community members. Here are some important tips that you can discuss with your child courtesy of Child Safe Canada.

Talking To Strangers: Don't teach your child to fear strangers, but strangeness. If a youngster can't talk to strangers, who will they go to in an emergency?

Trust Your Instincts: If someone doesn't make you feel safe, it's OK to run away and tell an adult you trust.

Vehicles: Never approach vehicles. In fact, if ever approached by a vehicle, RUN in the opposite direction that the vehicle is traveling and tell an adult.

Names: No visible names on outerwear or backpacks.

It's OK To Yell: If someone grabs your child, they should hit, kick, and yell as loudly as possible.

Password: Use a password that is easy for your children to remember, so that if you must send a friend of family member to pick them up, they will know it's safe because that person has the password.

Emergency Numbers: Remind children that in an emergency, they can dial 911 or 0 from a phone booth, without any money.

Safety In Numbers: Children should always travel in groups of 2 or more. Always take the same route and check in when you arrive home, if necessary.

Teach More Than Once: Start young, teach them again and again ‐ and practice dangerous situations, modifying and adjusting to fit their growing understanding.

Adults Don't Ask Children For Help: So if someone does, it's a sign of danger. Run, and tell an adult you trust.

People With Bad Intentions Don't Always Look Like Bad People: Dangerous people can look friendly. You know they aren't good people if you feel badly when you're with them. Again, trust your instincts.

Secrets: If someone tells you to keep a secret from your mom or your dad, don't do it! Tell your parents right away. That's a big sign of danger.

Ask First: Don't go anywhere, with anyone, without your parent's permission.

Lost In A Store: If you get lost in a store you can ask for help from a person in uniform who works for the store, or you can go to the till, . Don't ever leave the store with anyone, even with someone in a uniform.

Importance of Winter Clothing in Winter As winter is in full swing, it is important that students are dressed appropriately for the weather. Unless the weather conditions are severe, as outlined in the TCDSB cold weather policy, students will go outside during the recess breaks to ensure that they get their much‐needed fresh air and exercise. Please ensure that children come to school with:

Waterproof winter boots

A second pair of indoor shoes

A winter coat

Waterproof gloves

A winter hat or toque

A scarf of appropriate length

A navy blue or white sweater (school uniform colours)

Registering for School Cash Online This year, we began implementing a School Cash Online option for parents allowing the purchase of pizza for pizza lunch online. To date, 30% of our families have registered for School Cash Online and just under 50% of pizza lunch orders are now purchased using School Cash Online. Kindly note that to reduce the amount of cash children are carrying and is handled by school staff, we will only accept School Cash Online orders for pizza in the spring 2020. More specific details to come. Also, beginning in January 2020, we will be providing parents with a School Cash Online option for trips as well! We encourage all parents to sign up for School Cash Online at tcdsb.schoolcashonline.com and click the “Register” button. Make purchases more safe and secure and stop sending cash to school with you children!

Personal Property Should be Kept at Home From time to time, students make inappropriate choices regarding the personal property of others. Since the school cannot take any responsibility for the loss or theft of personal items brought onto school premises by students, we ask that all expensive items be left at home. The school will not reimburse or replace lost or stolen articles under any circumstances. This will include all articles of clothing (kindly label items with a marker); personal school supplies or electronic devices. Please note that collector cards of any kind are not permitted and mobile phones, while allowed at school under parent discretion, must always be off and away unless used for learning reasons under the direction of the classroom teacher. We thank parents and students for their full cooperation.

Automated Speed Enforcement Systems to be Installed in School Zones The City of Toronto has announced the installation of Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) systems across the City of Toronto. ASE is intended to enhance road safety in Community Safety Zones near schools. The system captures any vehicle travelling in excess of the posted speed limit. This includes emergency vehicles and municipal fleet vehicles. Transportation services is installing 50 portable ASE systems near schools, and it is anticipated that they will rotate every three to six months within city wards. An educational campaign will be launched to inform drivers of the presence of an ASE system. During the initial period, the plate owner will simply be issued a warning letter to confirm that the vehicle was moving faster than the posted speed limit. No response to these warning letters is required. The City expects to move to issuing tickets in spring 2020.
