Cathedral Rector

A Letter from Our Dear Parishioners, I’m excited to announce yet another exciting liturgical development at Ss. Simon & Jude Cathedral. In the very near future, our 11AM Sunday Mass will be celebrated ad orientem (which is Latin for “toward the east”). Ad orientem refers to the posture of the priest at the altar during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. In an ad orientem Mass, the priest enjoys the same privilege of facing Jesus in the tabernacle as the congregation enjoys. We have already been celebrating our Tuesday evening 6:30PM Mass and the 8:30AM Friday School Mass ad orientem for several years now, so for some of you this won’t be anything new. For those who will be attending the ad orientem Mass for the first time, I would like to offer three considerations to assist with the transition. The first consideration is the priest’s responsibility to his parish community. A priest must lead his people to Christ by word and example. When the priest celebrates Mass ad orientem, his very posture models this duty, much the same as Moses stood at the head of the Israelites to lead them through the Red Sea and into the Promised Land. The second consideration is the feedback of our Cathedral School students when they first experienced Mass celebrated ad orientem several years ago. After I celebrated it the first time for the school, I went immediately to the cafeteria afterwards and asked the kids what it was like for them to experience Mass celebrated this way. One sixth-grade girl who had a personal interest in drama, told me, “It’s much more like you’re praying than performing when you celebrate Mass like that.” Another young lady said, “You’re actually closer to us because you’re on our side of the altar instead of behind it.” Perhaps the most theologically astute observation was from a student who said, “We can’t see what you’re doing at the altar until you raise the Eucharist over your head, but we can see that the Eucharist comes to us through the priest.” What a stunningly delightful, theologically sophisticated comment! This must be what Jesus meant when he said, “Out of the mouths of children and of babes thou hast brought prefect praise” (cf. Mt 21:16). As a final consideration, Bishop James Wall of Gallup, New Mexico recently announced that he and the other priests celebrating the 11AM Mass at his cathedral will celebrate it ad orientem. His excellent explanation of ad orientem can be found here (https://dioceseofgallup.org/celebrating-the-mass-ad-orientem/) or if you prefer, you’ll find a live link on our homepage (www.simonjude.org) within the section listing my recommended articles. As we begin the ad orientem Mass on Sundays, I welcome your questions and comments. God’s blessings, my prayers...

What is Eucharistic Adoration? Understood simply, Eucharistic Adoration

is adoring or honoring the Eucharistic Presence of Christ. In a deeper sense, it involves

"the contemplation of the Mystery of Christ truly present before us".

There are many hours available to commit to an hour of Adoration however those that are currently EMPTY are listed below. HOURS IN URGENT NEED OF ADORERS:

SUNDAYS Midnight - 1 AM 1 - 2 AM MONDAYS TUESDAYS 3 - 4 AM 10 - 11 AM 9 - 10 PM WEDNESDAYS We are in URGENT need of 4 Hourly Captains as well as 1 Division Leader. Please call the parish office for information. The language of God is silence, and in order to really hear him speak one must go through a kind of “language immersion” during which the mind is settled, the heart is soothed, and the person learns what it is to be truly at peace. To be at peace in the presence of the King is one of the greatest gifts Jesus gives to his Church. What a joy to meet him, as the woman at the well did, and to say with her, “Come and see a man who told me all I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” What an even greater joy to hear him say, “I who speak to you am He.” (John 4:26, 29) - Ryan A.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge though is to live faithfully now. St Vincent often asked this simple question: “What would Jesus Christ do, if he were in my place now?”

Thank you all who brought bags of food or donations for our St Vincent de Paul Annual Thanksgiving food drive. There are many families who depend on the St Vincent de Paul Pantry to get them thru the month. Also, with the food drive we are able to provide many families with the groceries to make their Thanksgiving meal.

We continue to ask our parishioners of they would be willing to sponsor one of the families we serve with our Adopt-A-Family Program. If you are interested please contact Lori at (602) 550-5105 for more information. We will be accepting sponsors until November 23rd.

Ask yourself what would Jesus do??

Religious items such as Nativity sets, rosaries, statues, crucifixes, etc. will be for sale after all the Masses on the weekend of November 16 & 17 About 180 Christian families from Bethlehem have been dependent upon sales of their hand carved religious articles to tourists of the Holy Land. Due to the conflict in the Middle East, the tourism has been cut off. In order to survive, they have turned to Christian communities in the United States to purchase their articles. These hand carved religious articles are carved from wood of the sacred olive tree, this workmanship has been traditional for these families for hundreds of years. It is hoped that through the sale of these items these families have a little income and are able to stay living in the Holy Land.
