INSPIRING CIVIL ENGINEER

Elattuvalapil Sreedharan

Elattuvalapil Sreedharan, popularly known as the “Metro Man”, is an Indian

engineer who played a key role in the building of the Konkan Railway and the

Delhi Metro. In India millions of people are dependent on the public transport

and the credit for changing the very face of Indian public transport goes to

this enterprising engineer. The man who began his career as a lecturer in an

engineering college appeared for the Engineering Services Examination

(ESE) and joined the Indian Engineering Service (IES). He first proved

his ability as an engineer when he was put in-charge of restoring a bridge that

had been damaged by a cyclone. He executed the complete work within 46

days as against the six months allotted to this task. Recognized by the govern-

ment for his brilliance, he was made the in-charge for planning and designing

the Kolkata metro, the very first metro in India. He had become such an

invaluable asset to Indian Railways that the government let him know that his

services would be required even after he retired from IES.

The Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri, the fourth high-

est civilian award in the Republic of India, in 2001. The Government of

France bestowed upon him The Order of Légion d'Honneur, the highest

decoration in France, in 2005. In 2008 he received the Padma Vibhushan, the

Interactive session on "PRADHAN MANTRI SPECIAL

SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME" 30th NOVEMBER 2018

AICTE has organized interactive session on “Pradhan Mantri special scholar-

ship scheme” and hosted by Sri Venkateshwara College of Engineering on

30/12/2018. The event was organized for the students Jammu and Kashmir stu-

dents studying in Karnataka and kerala.

Workshop on “INTRODUCTION TO CADD” on 5th & 6th

October 2019

The two days workshop on “Introduction to CAD” was planned to organize

for second year students of civil engineering by departmental co-coordinators in

order gain the knowledge of basics of auto cad and also for achieve the industry

requirements.


INDUSTRIAL VISITS

One day Industrial visit for Geological survey of India on

15/11/2018

Visit was arranged for 3rd sem civil engineering students to Geology Museum

and Geology Lab in Karnataka, Mr. Ajith Singh, Geologists, demonstrated

the different rocks types and uses in civil Engineering Projects in Geology

Museum.

Visit was arranged for 5th sem civil engineering students to Godrej Avenues at

Yelhanka is a residential project which is spread across 5.5 Acres colossal land

area. After the site visit students could better understand how the construction

process goes on in the site and the difference between the conventional method

and the MIVAN construction.


INDUSTRIAL VISITS

One day Industrial visit for Karnataka State Natural Disaster

Monitoring Center on 6th October 2018

Visit was arranged for 7th sem civil engineering students to KSNDMC, students

could better understand the rainfall pattern, wind velocity, cyclones, landslides

and drought how they can be measured and how the risk of damage can be re-

duced.
